Men’s Shawl-Collar Cotton Cardigan

I love cardigan sweaters! I found this gorgeous Italian cotton sweater knit at Mood Fabrics on a recent trip there and I couldn’t leave it behind.  It’s thick and luxurious-feeling and the colors remind me of the Mediterranean Sea.  (You can find a wide range of sweater knits available at Mood Fabrics here.) I decided to make a cotton cardigan out of it, using a vintage pattern in my stash, McCall’s 5267, from 1976.  It’s such a classic style, and I love the shawl collar, raglan sleeves, and jacket length. This sweater wasn’t difficult to make, though I confess to […]

Men’s Liberty-Inspired Cotton Paisley Shirt

Often, when dining out, between rich courses one is served a palate cleanser: a sprig of parsley for example, or some mint sorbet. This shirt — simpler than my typical Mood Sewing Network fare of late —  is my version of a palate cleanser: easy on the eyes and refreshingly minty. I adore Mood Fabrics’ selection of cotton shirting and shirt-weight prints.  I saw this mint and pale gray Liberty of London-style paisley (available in a number of colorways, btw) and was immediately smitten.  (To see this and other similar prints available at Mood Fabrics, click here.) I’ve learned, since […]

Men’s Pleated Shirt and Thai Fisherman Pants

The best way to end a snowy winter is to start dressing like it’s spring — or so I tell myself. I found this lovely blue and orange cotton plaid shirting at Mood Fabrics this month, and near it, a wild-patterned cotton lawn in a similar palette.  What better way to pair them than to combine them in a single outfit? Editor’s note: The cotton voile floral print is $14/yd, and the plaid shirting is $8/yd. Both are available at Mood’s NYC stores; email Jena@moodfabrics.com if you’d like to purchase. Online, MoodFabrics.com has loads of fun cotton voile prints and […]

Men’s Leopard Print Wool Overcoat

After flirting with the “urban lumberjack” look last month, it was time for a change. A big change. I’d purchased this Italian wool leopard print knit last fall, and in the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, I must thank my fellow Mood Sewing Network blogger  Ginger, whom I happened to run into at Mood Fabrics the day I was deciding on my purchase.  I knew I loved the leopard, but I wasn’t sure I could pull it off.  Ginger urged me to go for it.  The rest, as they say, is history. Originally, I thought I’d make […]

Men’s Donegal Tweed Winter Coat

With winter on the horizon, it’s time for true cold weather outerwear.  For me, that means wool. At Mood Fabrics NYC, I found a lovely donegal tweed — the name generally given to tweeds with bits of yarn in other colors woven in, even if they’re not made in County Donegal, Ireland.  This one is mainly a brown salt and pepper, but as you can see, there are other colors too, like rust and beige.  The weave is coarse but the hand is quite soft. Editor’s note: Lots of great pea coat fabric options at MoodFabrics.com. For the lining, I […]

A Manly Striped Sweater

I don’t tend to do much sewing when it comes to men’s clothing, much to my boyfriend’s disappointment. Not really sure what my hang-up is —every time I find myself working on the odd piece of clothing for him, I am reminded of how much I actually enjoy doing this type of stuff. Not a lot of fit issues, frills, or funky patterns. Just simple and straightforward and… safe. Since I average about one piece of clothing per year for my dude, I reckon it’s time to share for 2013—a striped sweater, in a very manly wool knit. We found […]

Men’s Button-Up Shirt in Silk-and-Cotton-Blend Shirting

I’ve missed sewing with wovens the past few months. Everything’s been knits, knits, knits to accommodate my growing baby belly. So, when I came across Mood Fabric’s silk and cotton blend shirting while browsing their website looking for inspiration for my next garment, I knew I wanted to make it happen somehow. I liked that the silk in the blend gave it just that extra something and that the color was a natural ivory. Before long I also stumbled upon Mood Fabric’s Stone/Cream Striped Woven, and I was struck by the idea of pairing the two together. In a men’s […]

Men’s Plaid Wool Flannel Shirt

Well, a new project for me! I’ve never made menswear before and I can happily cross it off my list now I really like making guys clothes because the fit isn’t much of an issue. You can just sort of approximate and you’re good to go. The fabric I used is this blue/charcoal plaid wool flannel from Mood Fabrics. It’s coming up in the pictures looking a lot more ashy colored than it is in real life but oh well. It was super easy to work with and I found myself preferring it over cotton even! Matching up the plaids […]

Men’s Classic Pea Coat in Coated Canvas

What man (or woman, for that matter) wouldn’t like to own a waxed canvas pea coat? Waxed canvas outerwear is all the rage these days. But as someone who has owned waxed bags, I have found that they can feel oily and attract lint.  Could I find a good substitute? On the third floor of Mood Fabrics NYC I found a dark brown coated cotton canvas made in Italy.  I don’t know what it’s coated with—it feels a bit like oil paint but it isn’t stiff or heavy and you can still see the weave of the canvas. It’s waterproof […]
