Wool Gabardine Trousers and Comfy Tops

One of the joys of being self employed is that I often get to work from home or have a bit of down time between contracts to stay at home and sew! If I’m working at home I’m sure going to take advantage of the opportunity to dress as comfortably as possible but I’m a big believer in keeping a getting up and dressed as if you were going out to work routine anyway as I think this really helps with productivity. Plus answering the door to the postman in PJs at 3 in the afternoon on a Wednesday (yes […]

Casual Summer Separates

Phew! Is it just me, or has July really flown by in a steamy wave of hot, sticky, summer days? Seriously, where did this month go?! Honestly, I can’t complain, I spent a whole week of this month vacationing with my family in Disney World – Mom, Dad, sister, two brothers, a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law, and six nieces and nephews all under the age of 8!!! It was the absolute best kind of chaos imaginable. Of course, me being me, I decided I had nothing to wear for said vacation and that I needed a whole new summer wardrobe a smooth 5 […]

Viscose Harem Pants

This little pair of harem pants started out as an off-the-shoulder peasant dress. Basically, I succumbed to a trend which does not look good on me, realized my mistake, and then turned to another trend that does not look good on me as the solution. Ruggy is not happy with my choice. I’m actually not a fan of the look of this shape either. But the first time I made a pair of harem pants and tried them on, the feel of them was like the heavens opened up and started singing. Or maybe it was just the musical kids at rehearsals, […]

Cotton Plaid Flannel Robe

It’s the end of February, and you know what that means: wear-your-housecoat-all-day-because-it’s-otherwise-too-cold season! Seriously. Can it be spring already!? I was serious about wearing my robe all day, at least when I’m hanging around the house (I work from home a couple of days a week, so this happens pretty frequently this time of year). I have an old fleece robe that has served me well for many a winter, but it’s really starting to look it’s age (almost a decade, I have recently realized!). I knew it was time for an upgrade to something a little classier, so I’d […]

Decisions, Decisions…

“What are you making?” asked the dignified Mood Fabrics sales associate. “Pajamas.” I replied. “Shame on you,”  he responded with a wink. The soft shirting fabric with subtle stripes seemed to be a perfect choice for a pair of men’s style pajamas, but what did I know. I meditated on the comment for nearly two years before cutting the fabric and combining two patterns from my stash: Butterick’s 5526 shirt pattern, view C , and Simplicity 7092 for the pajama pants. My friend who offers professional embroidery services made a beautiful  4 1/2″ monogram for the pocket. Nearing the end […]

Derek Lam Cotton Knit Jacket

The purchase of this gorgeous thick knit from Derek Lam for this month’s Mood Sewing Network project was a no brainer. Living in London my handmade wardrobe is constantly in need of snuggly, comfy garments suitable for layering and making them out of unique fabrics like this one means I still feel great wearing them. I picked this piece in Mood Fabrics LA back in September and whilst it was available online it’s now unfortunately sold out. However, hunting for it I did discovering this amazing striped French Terry from the same designer which has been immediately added to my […]

An Athletic Inspired Mini Wardrobe

Hey everyone! I hope y’all have had a great September – I can’t believe it’s over already! Was it just me, or did it seem to fly by particularly fast? This month for the Mood Sewing Network I decided to do something a little different.  Rather than making one garment, I spent each weekend sewing up one article of clothing with the aim of filling in a huge wardrobe gap for me – workout/leisure wear.  All these garments were really fast makes, and I approached each as a little experiment.  If you’ve ever looked at RTW active wear you know […]

Pretty Poplin Pajamas!

Hi, guys! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, and if you celebrated Canada Day or the 4th of July, that your weekends were extra festive! OK, while I have, overall, a really serviceable wardrobe that’s really starting to reflect my style, I have to admit that when it comes to the “unseen” items, the situation is dire. Socks, underwear, pajamas… they’re all in sad, sorry shape! Since I began to sew very seriously a few years ago, I just haven’t had the interest in shopping, but it’s also seemed quite silly to spend time sewing things that will […]

Men’s Pleated Shirt and Thai Fisherman Pants

The best way to end a snowy winter is to start dressing like it’s spring — or so I tell myself. I found this lovely blue and orange cotton plaid shirting at Mood Fabrics this month, and near it, a wild-patterned cotton lawn in a similar palette.  What better way to pair them than to combine them in a single outfit? Editor’s note: The cotton voile floral print is $14/yd, and the plaid shirting is $8/yd. Both are available at Mood’s NYC stores; email Jena@moodfabrics.com if you’d like to purchase. Online, MoodFabrics.com has loads of fun cotton voile prints and […]
