An Unexpected Ensemble

To be quite honest, I think sewing is making me more stubborn, yet, more patient. Both pieces in this combo were intended as something completely different than their outcome. First up, the jeans jacket, which was meant to be a peplumed affair, Simplicity 1919. I was ever so patient with this jacket, so patient my hands literally turned blue (oh, yeah, the dye on this one is strong. It’s sold out now, be grateful– but there’s a heap of Ralph Lauren denim just in). I fitted, I pressed… I changed thread colors, I topstitched with care… AND THEN RIPPED OUT AN ENTIRE FULLY LINED, CLIPPED, GRADED, TOPSTITCHED, […]

My First Jeans and a Seasonal Velvet Cami

London has been clinging on to summer and I have been clinging on to my handmade summer wardrobe but with this month’s project for the Mood Sewing Network I have finally taken the plunge and started some projects more suited to the approaching season. Sewing my own jeans has been in my sewing queue for nigh on two years now and I am almost ashamed to admit that I actually cut these Ginger Jeans out well over a year ago. It is by far the longest a project has taken me from putting scissors to cloth and completion and I’m […]

Hit And Miss

Please excuse the pseudo artsy filtered image, but this little floaty top makes me feel like I’m walking around in a real life Instagram. Wait, hold on… There you go! Back to reality. CLOSE UP REALITY. Where you can see aaaaaallllll of the wrinkles in my second pair of Birkin Flares! I consider this pair practice in the process of making jeans, not so much a win in the process of filling the holes in my separates closet. The fabric, a Marc Jacobs denim, has far too much stretch for this pattern, which is hit-you-over-the-head obvious in the fabric content– […]

Flannel and Denim with a 70’s Vibe

Something about late February makes me want to snuggle up in cotton flannel. At Mood Fabrics in NYC, I found a beautiful, super-soft flannel in a muted blue, black, and white plaid which I knew would eventually end up as a winter shirt for me. (You can see Mood’s online selection of cotton flannel shirting here.) This month I decided flannel-shirt time had arrived, and I whipped one up using a favorite vintage Seventies shirt pattern, Butterick 4575.  The only change I made from the original pattern was to add contrasting inner cuffs and collar stand using black cotton sateen […]

Men’s Silver Metallic Jeans

I’ve always been drawn to fabrics that have a metallic sheen. But it wasn’t until I found this Ralph Lauren metallic denim — the end of a bolt — at Mood Fabrics in New York City that I decided to take the plunge.  (While my fabric is unavailable online, this silver stretch faux leather seems like a good alternative). To make these jeans, I used my self-drafted jeans sloper and added elements like pockets and waistband from Kwik Sew 3504.  Since this fabric has Lycra in it, I did a little tweaking along the way.  I knew I wanted these […]

Tigerlily Orange Top & Burnished Gold Jeans

I’m not terribly proud to admit this, but there is quite a bit of inspiration that comes by way of my boss’ closet. Before that sounds too weird, let me backtrack – I work as a Personal Assistant, and part of my job is handling the laundry (no groans here – I actually really love doing laundry. Seriously!). My employer is pretty fashionable, and LOVES shopping, so there are constantly new pieces going in the closet and getting subsequently filed away in my mental inspiration folder. Such is the case with this outfit – light colored jeans and a coral […]

Winter White and Indigo Blue: a Men’s Jeans Journey

Readers, you CAN wear white in winter — and if you’re willing to risk the odd splash, you can even wear it in the slushy snow! This month I decided to make myself jeans.  I’d purchased some pants-weight cotton twill in white at Mood Fabrics’ New York store this winter, along with a sturdy indigo cotton denim.  (You can find similar white twill at Mood Fabrics here and a broad selection of cotton denim is available here.) I used Kwik Sew 3504, an in-print men’s jeans pattern which I’d tried a few times before with good results. While I topstitched […]

Revisiting Red & Seafoam

Hey everyone! I don’t know about you, but this is about the time of year that I start really hankering for spring. I miss everything about it, especially the part about not freezing (it also doesn’t hurt that I’ve been stuck home for the past 3 days due to a really bad ice storm. Actually, I’m not complaining about that at all haha)! I’ve been trying to spring-ify my wardrobe just a little (maybe in hopes that it will make the season hurry up faster?), which means digging out all the colors I forgot about over the winter, as well […]

Denim Like Twill – Fall Wardrobe Builder

Fall is here and I don’t have enough casual wear in my wardrobe!  So this season I’ll work on beefing up my casual wear. A nice pair of jeans are a perfect start.  I found the absolute perfect Mood fabric.  Check out this cotton denim like twill.  It is gorgeous. The description  states that it has a softer hand than denim, which is true.  But I’d like to add that it feels buttery like a suede clothe.  It’s great against the skin and moves gracefully with every step.  This is a must have fabric for fall casual wear. The color […]
