Marc Jacobs Silk-Blend Taffeta Jacket and Shorts

Editor’s note: We are thrilled to welcome Peter as one of our newest Mood Sewing Network bloggers! You may already know Peter from his blog Male Pattern Boldness, “the world’s most popular men’s sewing blog.” We look forward to seeing what he makes with our fabrics. Readers, I am thrilled to be participating in the Mood Sewing Network and extremely excited to be posting this, my very first MSN blog post.  A special thank you to Meg and Eric  for inviting me to be the network’s first blogger dude! I had no idea what my first project would be.  […]

Striped Blazer

I have been looking at striped blazers for about a month now–just search “stripe knit blazer” on Pinterest and it yields many results.  From the traditional navy-white/cream to red/navy and green/navy color combination, to varying lengths to the treatment of the label/front finishes, the choices are limitless for this stylish blazer. I purchased Navy Stripes Nautical Double-faced Cotton-blend Jersey with the one thought, “I love this fabric!”  After my order came from Mood Fabrics, I noticed my navy ponte (from my first Mood Sewing Network post) matched perfectly.  That is when we fashion sewers just start planning and picturing ideas.  I looked at all the […]

Cotton Twill Surplus Jacket

This OOP Vogue 1762 – Yves Saint Laurent (that’s a designer label that makes me sit up and pay attention) from 1996.  It’s from the YSL 1995 Fall RTW Collection.  Why did Vogue Patterns stop providing offerings from YSL?!  Those collections are always amazing! YSL Fall 1995 Collection I don’t know if this pattern is quite old enough to be considered “vintage”, even if it is almost 20 years old.  But just as I said when I made my pattern, it’s about as much vintage as I can take without feeling all “costumey” or like I’m attending a theme party. […]

Paprika Wool Jacket

Here she is—my first make of 2013, and my very first jacket!  I’m so excited to add this little piece to my wardrobe! As you may recall, when I was looking for jacket inspiration, I was really drawn to the idea of using a fun, vibrant color.  But you know what they say about the best-laid plans of mice, men, and fashionistas… I came to Mood NYC with every intention of leaving with a bright, saturated fabric, but once I laid eyes on this gorgeous Ralph Lauren wool, I just couldn’t put it back!  It’s a twill-weave suiting with lots […]

Brown Wool Crepe Jacket

This jacket is part of my City in Winter Collection.  I’ve been working on and sewing this wardrobe since last October. The purpose of this exercise was to create a versatile wardrobe that I could use for any part of my busy life —work, dates out with friends and church.  I’ve finished quite a few pieces (I’ve already shared the bottoms here) but I was dragging my feet making the jacket. The jacket is from Vogue 8208 which is an out-of-print pattern that has been reviewed several times on Pattern Review…and now I know why there are only four reviews for it!  This […]

the blogger boucle

One busy afternoon at Mood, The Police were playing. Kway and I discussed the awesomeness of this giant among rock bands. Greats bands are like a marriage, he said, some end, but after they’ve had kids. Then when it’s over, you say, yeah, they got divorced. But those are some beautiful kids. I suppose that’s what it’s like with this boucle. Or at least, the idea of this boucle. We had an affair for over two months before I finally divorced myself from my original vision of it. Ruggy would catch me standing in the middle of the room, hugging it: what are you doing? Really […]

Inspiration Strikes: Jackets!

Hello, everyone! Did you make any sewing plans for the new year? I’m really excited about making heaps of garments this year, but I think I’m most looking forward to sewing my first jacket! But what kind of jacket should I make?? I love the idea of a classic wool jacket (have you SEEN Erica’s gorgeous pea coat?), but in my quest to add more color to my winter wardrobe, I’m trying to avoid navy and black. So what about starting with a classic pea coat silhouette… …and pumping it up with some bright color?! Whoa! This is a whole […]

The Pea Coat!

Every year since this pattern was released back in 2005, I’ve planned to make this jacket.  I’ve bought fabric every single year and the fabric seems to get designated for another project each year.  For the life of me, I couldn’t remember why I’d never gotten around to making this.  But this year, I was determined to make my pea coat that I’ve wanted for so long. This is out-of-print Vogue 2873, a design by Michael Kors from his Fall 2004 collection.  What I love most about this design is that pea coats are so traditional and timeless and this […]

Silk Brocade Quilted Jacket

Where do you look for inspiration when you create your garments? If you’re like me you look to the runway each season, to see what ideas you can borrow or knock off. I loved, loved, loved Proenza Schouler’s Fall 2012 collection, maybe because it relied heavily on brocade (and you know what a brocade addict I am). I already had some orange silk brocade from Mood NYC in my stash as a starting point, and I knew I wanted to make a quilted jacket. One of McCalls’ newer patterns, 6644, was designed to be used for quilted fabrics and I […]
