Twill and Flannel Anorak

Brrrrrr! Readers, it’s cold out here! I’m no fan of winter weather, but I AM a fan of outerwear, so at least the silver lining of this week’s snowfall is that I get to road-test my new jacket! I’ve really been digging the trend of slouchy anoraks that all the cool Brooklyn babes seem to be wearing lately, so I was excited to recreate the look myself. The ubiquitous olive green doesn’t do me any favors, so I opted for a nice medium gray cotton twill from Mood Fabrics NYC (these beautiful organic twills are favorites of mine– I’ve used several colorways for [...]

Black and White Wool Plaid Coat

It’s been a couple of months in the making, but I’m happy to finally announce that my plaid coat is finally finished! Making this coat was truly a labor of love. I chose to fully tailor the coat, which definitely added to the time and expense involved, but it also just makes the coat feel so much more substantial and nice. This is a piece I see myself wearing for years – it’s made to last that long, anyway! My pattern, a vintage Vogue pattern from the 70s, included everything I needed in the instructions to get the coat fully [...]

Shiny Sateen Blazer!

Hi, guys! Happy Almost-Holidays! This time of year I often find myself with functions to go to after work, but I don’t have time to go home and change first. Sometimes I drag a cocktail dress to work and change in the ladies’ room, but I decided that it would be easier (and less stressful!) to make a day-to-night piece that I can toss on top of my work outfit when I feel like getting a little festive. Enter this blazer! I used two black cotton sateens, one very shiny (for the lapels and welts) and one more matte (for [...]

Men’s Donegal Tweed Winter Coat

With winter on the horizon, it’s time for true cold weather outerwear.  For me, that means wool. At Mood Fabrics NYC, I found a lovely donegal tweed — the name generally given to tweeds with bits of yarn in other colors woven in, even if they’re not made in County Donegal, Ireland.  This one is mainly a brown salt and pepper, but as you can see, there are other colors too, like rust and beige.  The weave is coarse but the hand is quite soft. Editor’s note: Lots of great pea coat fabric options at MoodFabrics.com. For the lining, I [...]

Wool Bomber Jacket

This gorgeous wool denim made its way to my house recently. It’s Mood Fabrics’ Italian Wool Denim to be exact. Editor’s note: Looks like Lori may have gotten the last of this fabric, as it’s now sold out. But don’t worry, we have lots of wools suitable for bomber jackets here. The description  says this fabric is medium-weight, good for boxy tops and jackets. I had it in mind for another project to mix with a wool plaid but these two fabric were not quite right for each other. After Papercut Patterns’ Rigel Bomber came out, I knew this fabric [...]

Men’s Classic Pea Coat in Coated Canvas

What man (or woman, for that matter) wouldn’t like to own a waxed canvas pea coat? Waxed canvas outerwear is all the rage these days. But as someone who has owned waxed bags, I have found that they can feel oily and attract lint.  Could I find a good substitute? On the third floor of Mood Fabrics NYC I found a dark brown coated cotton canvas made in Italy.  I don’t know what it’s coated with—it feels a bit like oil paint but it isn’t stiff or heavy and you can still see the weave of the canvas. It’s waterproof [...]

Cozy Cocoon Cardigan in Quilted Plaid Wool

Hi, guys!  Hope you’re all well!  Here in NYC it has suddenly grown bitterly cold, so perhaps we can blame what you’re about to witness on the weather. I’ve been really interested lately in the fun cocoon coats and jackets popping up on Pinterest and fashion blogs.  There’s something really daring about the exaggerated shape, and I really like that.  I love to be bold and try new shapes!  I thought it would be really fun to try out a traditional cold-weather fabric in this modern silhouette, so I used this amazing plaid wool coating from Mood Fabrics NYC (look [...]

60′s-Inspired Vintage Jacket in Wool Bouclé

I found this awesome wool boucle on the third floor of Mood Fabric’s NYC store.  I know people have favorite sections of the store, but me, I love the third floor because it’s magical!  You never know what you’ll find there and every time I climb the stairs, I find the most amazing delights. To be honest, I’ve had this piece for a minute.  When Todd pulled it off the rack for me, I squealed with joy because not only is it a beautiful creamy medium-weight bouclé but it’s also backed with interfacing. Peoples, to me this is like finding [...]

Oscar de la Renta Bouclé Jacket with Leather Trim

The navy and black color combo is currently a very popular trend. Even though I still think you shouldn’t wear black shoes with a navy dress, I do like them together in fabrics or colorblocked. Which is why, when I spotted this black and almost-navy plaid boucle at Mood Fabrics, I knew I wanted it for something. It’s Oscar de la Renta fabric with metallic threads and tiny black sequins, and reminds me somewhat of the fabric used for this dress – also OdlR, and also with sequins. I decided on jacket 106 from the February 2013 Burda issue, but [...]
