Fighting the Chill of the Chicago Winds in Mood Chocolate Double Knit – McCall 6996-A

Chicago winters should never be taken lightly.  The arctic blast is brutal, and lasts longer than the average North American winter.  Baby, it’s cold outside!  Everyone needs an extra layer under a warm coat to protect them from the wind and snow. Mood has a nice selection of cozy fabrics, here and here.  For a warm cardigan, I chose this insulated chocolate cotton poly double knit to help shield me from the chilling winds.  This textiles sews without any problems.  I paired it with McCall 6996 View-A.  It is described as Misses’ jackets and belt:  close-fitting, unlined jackets have raised […]

Wool Knit Biker Jacket

G’day, it’s Australia Day. Today, despite it being the middle of summer in Australia I’ve made a biker jacket in some fabulous wool knit suiting from Mood Fabrics NY. I have a tendency to sew out-of-season, at least I’m ready for the cold of winter or heat of summer when they arriving. This jacket is another adventure into fabrics I’ve never sewn with before! A wool knit blend, this particular one is sold out – however this heavy black wool stretch suiting would be perfect and this wool ponte would also be a dream to sew with. I spend FOREVER researching patterns for the […]

Men’s Cotton Twill Toggle Jacket

Seems to be coat season over here on the Mood Sewing Network! And for good reason – have you ever made a coat before? IT’S SO MUCH FUN. For my one unselfish moment of 2014 (everybody gets one), I decided to channel that energy into a new piece of outerwear for my boyfriend, Landon. Like I said, I love making coats, and I was already up and ready to make another (what? I told you they are fun!) – so I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and make a coat for Landon. Ain’t I so sweet? 🙂 […]

Men’s Wool Plaid Shacket!

OK, I know what you’re thinking: WHAT, in heaven’s name, is a “shacket”??? Readers, it’s simply slang for shirt jacket. Kind of cute, don’t you think? Last year at Mood Fabrics in NYC, I purchased three yards of a beautiful wool plaid flannel, originally intended as lining for a tweed coat but which I decided was too special to be hidden away. This month I decided to use it to make a shacket. (Mood has a wide selection of wool plaids in a variety of weights. Check them out here.) I used a regular men’s shirt pattern, but I added […]

Men’s Op-Art Anorak

This month I tried my hand once again at men’s outerwear. After September’s parka, I decided to make a lined anorak (aka a pullover parka with a half zip). After hunting through the synthetic outerwear fabrics at Mood Fabrics, trying to find the perfect solid, I happened upon a psychedelic black and white print in a nylon blend that immediately called out to me. It wasn’t till I brought the bolt to be cut that Todd pointed out that my fabric was a panel print (Thank you, Todd!).  I purchased three panels, or approximately two and a half yards.  (You […]

Little Pink Jacket!

The little pink jacket… it’s a wardrobe staple, right? Alright, maybe not, but it sure is fun! I’ve been a bit obsessed with coats lately, and while I have a few in my sewing queue for this fall and winter, I knew that the first one I wanted to make would be for my mom. She has a fun personality and doesn’t take her wardrobe too seriously, so I knew I could have some fun with fabric and style. She’s a very casual dresser, but she likes styles that are classic or slightly vintage, so I thought this cropped swing […]

Men’s Classic Mountain Parka

Today is the first day of fall and I’m oh-so-ready: I am delighted to present my just-completed eight-pocket mountain parka! This design is based on the famous 60/40 (referring to cotton/nylon) mountain parka produced by Sierra Designs (below) in 1968.  Back in the days before Gortex and other waterproof, breathable fabrics, a shell parka like this one was what you’d wear on a hike or backpacking trip.  The fabric is sturdy and water-repellant and the fit is generous enough for layering over sweaters and/or thermals. Part of the challenge of a project like this is that everyone knows what the […]

Men’s cotton-linen jacket/pants ensemble + mesh t-shirt

Summer is nearly upon us and that means summer heat. Here in New York City, however, one can’t live just in shorts and tank tops: we’re a bit more formal (well, most of the time).  The trick is to dress up in lightweight, all-natural fabrics. I found this beautiful denim-colored cotton-linen blend at Mood Fabrics and picked up three yards without a specific project in mind. (You can see Mood’s wide assortment of linen blends here.) It has a marvelous hand — crisper than pure linen and less prone to wrinkling, but still with lovely drape (especially after laundering). I […]

Ikat Blazer!

Hi, guys! Hope you’re all well! This month, my project is a fun one! Now, I don’t wear much black, I never wear white, and I DO NOT wear black and white together. I just don’t! But for some reason, this print just called my name and I went with it! This is a Theory poly-cotton blend, soft and with lots of drape, that I found at Mood Fabrics NYC. (I don’t really follow designers, so I’m not searching for any specific designer’s fabric at Mood, but I seem to always find and love Theory fabrics! Whoever picks out their […]
