Derek Lam Cotton Knit Jacket

The purchase of this gorgeous thick knit from Derek Lam for this month’s Mood Sewing Network project was a no brainer. Living in London my handmade wardrobe is constantly in need of snuggly, comfy garments suitable for layering and making them out of unique fabrics like this one means I still feel great wearing them. I picked this piece in Mood Fabrics LA back in September and whilst it was available online it’s now unfortunately sold out. However, hunting for it I did discovering this amazing striped French Terry from the same designer which has been immediately added to my [...]

Polka Dot Jacquard Jacket

In my last blog post, I announced a hefty challenge I am embracing for my upcoming birthday which rolls around in approximately 345 days. I plan to celebrate the new 40 with 40 new garments made by moi, and I’m beginning the challenge by combating the drab clothes that dominate my winter wardrobe. Hello color and Happy Holidays!   Mood Fabric’s Green on Black Polka Dotted Polyester Jacquard caught my eye online and nearly blinded me when I opened the package – but what an antidote for winter drab! (more colors here) I paired the fabric with Butterick 6103. Whether it [...]

Men’s Black Denim Zippered Jacket

Maybe it’s because my hair is graying, but I’m finding black denim much more flattering to me than blue denim these days. I’d recently purchased two and a half yards of stiff black 100% cotton denim at Mood Fabrics in New York City and I knew it would be perfect for a not-quite-winter shell-type jacket I could wear over sweaters. (This black Ralph Lauren denim would be perfect.)  I much prefer layers to a single cold-weather garment: with global warming, you never know what the temperature will be. If I told you my jacket was based on a 1930′s men’s [...]

Italian Wool Pea Coat

What makes a great coat?  Well, I think many things but the first is great fabric and Mood Fabrics’ Italian Navy Wool Blended Coating is great fabric.  This fabric is luscious yardage that sews beautifully and worked its way into a gorgeous pea coat, Vogue 1467.  I knew when this pattern was released I wanted to make this coat in a deep, dark navy and this Italian Coating was perfect for the project.  The fabric is wool, nylon and cashmere, which is wonderful to the touch but also has loft and warmth. A sewalong was announced for this [...]

Crazy Aztec Wool Jacket

One thing I look forward to sewing every year is a new winter coat. I spend my summer planning out all the details and collecting fabrics and notions (PROTIP: While coatmaking can be expensive, the cost hurts a lot less if you buy the goods in phases haha), so that I’m ready to sew it up once the weather cools down. My last two coats have also been MSN projects – a dramatic, designer-inspired red wool coat and a black and white checked plaid wool peacoat straight outta the 1970s. I just love making coats, you guys. Since I’m well-covered [...]

Rag & Bone Blue Crepe Quart Jacket

I was really intrigued when I spotted this Rag & Bone Navy/Blue Cotton-Rayon Crepe in the new arrivals section of the Mood Fabrics website! It sounded so unusual being of a medium to heavy weight yet fluid. I’d been after something unique to make myself a biker style jacket after seeing Pauline Alice’s amazing short version of her Quart Coat so decided to take the plunge for this month’s Mood Sewing Network project and order myself enough of this to investigate. When it arrived it was kind of what I was imagining and kind of not…whatever it was it was [...]

Men’s Tropical Print Blazer

This month I sewed for my partner, Michael (that’s him above).  I hadn’t made him something in a long time  — as he sometimes reminded me! Last month at Mood Fabrics in NYC I found this bold, tri-color hibiscus print in a lightly coated cotton canvas and, without a particular project in mind, snatched up two and a half yards.   Back home, I draped it on Michael. It was too heavy for shirting, however, and too stiff for pants, and I wasn’t sure what to do with it.  My blog readers — a jovial lot — were leaning toward beach [...]

Tuxedo Jacket and Silk Top

Summer means bright and fun colors but in reality  you just can’t escape black and white and/or cream.  These two colors are classic and always show up in fashion, plus they just go with everything.   I wear the cream/white so much better than the black so I went with a cream heavy look with accents of black for these two garments.   Well, let’s back up a bit, it all started with the blouse, McCall’s 7094, something very similar to a RTW top I have and love.  The fabric suggested was easy, a crepe de chine  and I had [...]

Electric Blue Neoprene Blazer!

Hi, guys! Hope everyone is well! Let’s talk for a minute about fabric fads. Sometimes a fabric seems to get popular overnight and show up everywhere all at once! Neoprene is one of those fabrics. It’s suddenly everywhere! I’ve been curious about it for a while, but I’ve mostly seen it used for bodycon dresses or skirts and that’s just not my cup of tea. But when I saw this bright blue Alexander Wang neoprene at Mood NYC, I had one thought: BLAZER! (Check out Mood’s selection of neoprene here!) Now, neoprene is an unusual choice for a blazer, but [...]
