An Ankara Ensemble

By now you know a few of us here at the Mood Sewing Network used the month of January to dive into a “challenge” fabric. Some know it as Ankara, some as African Wax, some as Dutch Wax. I know it as YES PLEASE. I LOVE wax print. Love it, love it, love it. Did I mention I love it? This is an Osikani print, which is printed with metallic gold foil overlay. Although I always pre-wash my Ankara to soften it up, this time I decided to leave the wax in and use the stiff quality to play with […]

A Silk Crepe De Chine Topper

The Holiday Lights are up on our block! I believe this is what I’m enchanted by, but it’s anyone’s guess. There’s no questioning the fact that this silk has me bewitched. Meet my new favorite top. Blouse? Dress? Topper? Let’s go with topper. This beautiful silk crepe de chine print came home with me on a whim, the kind of instantaneous pick you make after 60 minutes of scouring the fabric aisles. You know how it is, after all that searching and second guessing, a bolt just jumps out at you, and it’s done and dusted in 60 seconds. (If […]

Wool Gabardine Trousers and Comfy Tops

One of the joys of being self employed is that I often get to work from home or have a bit of down time between contracts to stay at home and sew! If I’m working at home I’m sure going to take advantage of the opportunity to dress as comfortably as possible but I’m a big believer in keeping a getting up and dressed as if you were going out to work routine anyway as I think this really helps with productivity. Plus answering the door to the postman in PJs at 3 in the afternoon on a Wednesday (yes […]

An Unexpected Ensemble

To be quite honest, I think sewing is making me more stubborn, yet, more patient. Both pieces in this combo were intended as something completely different than their outcome. First up, the jeans jacket, which was meant to be a peplumed affair, Simplicity 1919. I was ever so patient with this jacket, so patient my hands literally turned blue (oh, yeah, the dye on this one is strong. It’s sold out now, be grateful– but there’s a heap of Ralph Lauren denim just in). I fitted, I pressed… I changed thread colors, I topstitched with care… AND THEN RIPPED OUT AN ENTIRE FULLY LINED, CLIPPED, GRADED, TOPSTITCHED, […]

Viscose Harem Pants

This little pair of harem pants started out as an off-the-shoulder peasant dress. Basically, I succumbed to a trend which does not look good on me, realized my mistake, and then turned to another trend that does not look good on me as the solution. Ruggy is not happy with my choice. I’m actually not a fan of the look of this shape either. But the first time I made a pair of harem pants and tried them on, the feel of them was like the heavens opened up and started singing. Or maybe it was just the musical kids at rehearsals, […]

Braided Maxi Dress

Hey Y’all! It’s a long weekend here in the US, and most everyone is out enjoying the sudden jump to summer temperatures. For me, that doesn’t mean “Beach” so much as it means “Concrete Rooftop,” but hey– it’s sunny. It’s warm. I’LL TAKE IT. I am SO happy to be in maxi dress weather! I had a completely different garment planned for my May Mood post, but this jumped queue when the thermometer merrily climbed above 80. Favorite season, favorite fabrics! Viscose jersey is another one of my loves– much like Rayon, it feels like you’re draped in your own […]

Silk Jersey Off-the-shoulder Mini Dress

Meet my new favorite dress. OH DON’T BE COY SHOW US THE FRONT I love it so much! You guys, I was on the road to failure with this Silk Jersey Panel Print for so long, I thought the trip would never end! It started in Mood Fabric’s NY location, when I turned from the cutting table and came face to face with this beauty. She was in my arms within seconds. Foot on the floor, I screamed north with my new companion, racing to Drapey Town. But I made a wrong turn at Cuttersville, and when I found myself […]

Emerald Cotton Riding Jacket

We all have a list. Whether you’ve collected it into a spreadsheet or Pinterest board, whether it’s posted above your sewing machine or lodges only in your mind, amorphous and ever-changing, every sewist has one. The list of dream projects. Mine is filled with all sorts of garments, from swirling velvet cloaks to exact replicas of every costume from Thoroughly Modern Millie. It’s rare that I actually sew something off this list, because how often do I need a floor length lavender silk gown with a bateau neckline? Sometimes, though, real world needs and dream projects collide. Such was the […]

Modern Floral Asymmetrical Skirt

Happy 2016, friends! I hope the new year is treating you well. Let’s ignore how tardy I am with this post’s salutation and instead talk about that classic January conundrum: Should I make a New Year’s Resolution? Usually, I fall firmly in the negative camp on that. Personally, I find that setting small, regular goals works better for my “Oh, a shiny thing!” brain. Until, this year. For 2016, I decided to make not one, but two, resolutions. Of course, my resolutions are both firmly sartorial. Instead of painful life fixes, they are fun goals I am excited to tackle. […]
