Sewing Projects For the Home

Hey everyone! I’m doing something a little different this month for my MSN project – instead of sewing for myself, I sewed some stuff for my home! This is about as close to unselfish sewing as I can manage ūüėČ I just recently moved house (from a basement apartment in the middle of the woods, to a sweet second-floor apartment with masses of windows, in my favorite part of Nashville!), so sprucing up and decorating were at the top of the list! Plus, I wasn’t sure if I’d have enough time to sew an outfit for myself with all the […]

Little Black Dress

Greetings from Edisto Island! Hubby and I are on the grounds of the island’s historic Presbyterian Church¬†now in its fourth century of worship, and which we found to be a perfect setting for photos. I was on a mission to make brightly colored summer clothes when New Look 6429¬†leaped off of the catalogue page. It is one of those patterns I’ve been looking for since I returned to sewing nearly 5 years ago. Cut in shoulders, cut out neckline, simple and chic, I was smitten. I also had a ¬†beautiful piece of black stretch viscose crepe from Mood Fabrics¬†waiting to […]

Braided Maxi Dress

Hey Y’all! It’s a long weekend here in the US, and most everyone is out enjoying the sudden jump to summer temperatures. For me, that doesn’t mean “Beach” so much as it means “Concrete Rooftop,” but hey– it’s sunny. It’s warm. I’LL TAKE IT. I am SO happy to be in maxi dress weather! I had a completely different garment planned for my May Mood post, but this jumped queue when the thermometer merrily climbed above 80. Favorite season, favorite fabrics! Viscose jersey is another one of my loves– much like Rayon, it feels like you’re draped in your own […]

A Marble Print Dress

Hi Everyone, and happy May! It’s getting to be that time of year when I live in dresses. ¬†There’s nothing better on a hot, sticky day than throwing on an easy, breezy dress and a pair of sandals, and that’s exactly the type of garments I’ve been interested in sewing lately. ¬†In my climate I can really never have too many sundresses! This month for the Mood Sewing Network I decided to delve into this scrumptious Dusty Turquoise/White Marble Rayon Print¬†from Mood Fabrics online. ¬†Rayon challis is one of my favorite fabrics to wear. It has many of the same […]

Vogue 1507 | Paisley + Pinstripes Print Mixing!

I’ve never been the biggest fan of prints, so when I find some that I like, it’s true love!  I fell in love with this crisp Dark Midnight Paisley Printed Cotton Poplin which is unfortunately sold out, but there is still some available in the yellow colorway.  I knew it would be great for this top. And since I knew that I would be making the pants also, I wanted a complimenting fabric, so I picked this Italian Navy Pinstriped Blended Linen.  It’s a cotton/linen blend with 1% of polyester.  Just enough to keep them from wrinkling like crazy. Vogue 1507, […]

Silk Jersey Off-the-shoulder Mini Dress

Meet my new favorite dress. OH DON’T BE COY SHOW US THE FRONT I love it so much! You guys, I was on the road to failure with this Silk Jersey Panel Print for so long, I thought the trip would never end! It started in Mood Fabric’s NY location, when I turned from the cutting table and came face to face with this beauty. She was in my arms within seconds. Foot on the floor, I screamed north with my new companion, racing to Drapey Town. But I made a wrong turn at Cuttersville, and when I found myself […]

Silk Faille Prom Dress

You read that title right – I made a prom dress this month! And not for a high schooler (please, we all know I’m not that unselfish), but an actual prom dress for myself ūüėČ Before you get too skeeved out at the idea of a 30 year old attending prom, I should point out that my best friend is a high school English teacher, and thus gets 2 free tickets every year. I weaseled my way into being her date because I wanted an excuse to make a fancy dress. Wouldn’t you do the same? ūüôā My first advice […]

Sleeveless Striped Metallic Knit Top

After last month’s complex Easter dress, I decided to keep it simple for April and make a knit top in a pattern I’ve used before with good results. The pattern is Jalie 2921. I used Mood Fabric’s oyster/brown gray metallic striped cotton jersey knit. A couple months ago I’d bought a cut of it along with its matching larger stripe for a different knit top, but the project bombed. However, I liked the fabric so much that I got another 1.5 yards and went for a garment I knew would turn out. Since I wanted more of a casual look […]

Bird Print Cotton Shirtdress

Hello, everyone! This spring, I’ve been totally consumed by an old love of mine: shirtdresses. Not only are they on trend this season, but there are a ton of new patterns out there. ¬†Whether you’re into swishy, feminine designs or modern, deconstructed takes on the style, some company is offering your platonic button-down dress. Personally, I’m forever drawn to classic styling. Stand collars, tailored button bands, and cinched waists are my ideal details. While my TNT pattern (M6696) has all of these, I’ve been itching to try something new. McCall’s 7351 fits that bill perfectly. This is a slightly more […]
