Linen Woven Border Dress for Kaitlyn

Remember when it was time to transition from a college student wardrobe to a professional wardrobe?  Well, that time is now for Kaitlyn, as she will be student teaching next semester.  One day Kaitlyn asked about some of the clothes I made and one thing led to another and now she is getting some mom-made garments.  First thing was types of fabrics and what I would make with them.  That discussion lead to this Mood Fabrics’ Ralph Lauren Denim Blue Linen Woven Border Print, which I am sorry to say is sold out.  This fabric is fabulous and so fun.  Some […]

Silk Cotton Maxi Dress

Last month, four yards of watery silk cotton slipped though my fingers for what felt like four years. Intended as my birthday dress, this beautiful headache went unworn, until I donned it for these pictures. To be honest, I put it in a time-out so many times, it has an aura of irritation about it that has yet to dissipate. Perhaps it needs a good dry cleaning, or a smudge stick. It’s not so much that I don’t like the finished product…I don’t like the memory of the work that went into it! But that’s not the fabric’s fault. The […]

A Linen Dress for Late Summer

Good morning, lovelies!  While I would love to start in on fall sewing–warm sweaters, swirling skirts, and cozy coats, oh my!–it’s still dreadfully hot in Texas. As someone whose sewing is heavily tied to immediate wardrobe needs, that means summer clothes are skulking about my sewing room for a little longer. One of the pieces I’ve been plotting all season is a simple linen dress. I love linen on warm days, don’t you? It’s breathable, full of gorgeous movement, and often weighty enough to go unlined. Despite its notorious tendency to wrinkle, it’s also unquestionably elegant. Linen dresses bring to […]

Chartreuse Summer Sewing

Phew! It was so hot when I was taking these photos!! Miraculously I look fairly cool and collected, but trust me, friends, I was anything but! My serene countenance has everything to do with this Month’s Mood Sewing Network make. This dress makes me feel like a Summer goddess, y’all! I bought a couple generous yards of this Limeade/White Tribal Leaf Print Viscose Crepe from Mood Fabrics online a few months back, thinking it might make a nice maxi dress one of these days.  It was actually a bit of a funny purchase for me because I can honestly say, prior to this […]

A Final Dress for Summer in Striped Embroidered Cotton

When it comes to picking new projects, I am inspired by both fabric choice and pattern choice pretty equally. This time it was the pattern that drove my decisions. I just adored Vogue 1499 when it was released this past spring. What really makes this design special is the way the stripes are laid out – front and back bodice on the cross grain, sides on and angle, pleated skirt a continuation of the cross grain. Shortly after I bought the pattern Mood posted a black & white striped floral embroidered cotton woven to their website. Perfect! I’ll take 2 […]

Crepe de Chine Maxi

My husband and I have always been awed by the 7:15 am sun at the beach ~ so soft and broken by the roofline of the houses as it rises and gently illuminates the beach. We knew this time would be perfect for shooting photos of my new dress, but were quickly reminded that best laid plans often go awry………….. This is my third maxi in the last three months; one in linen, one in a knit and this one in Mood Fabric’s Grenadine Silk Crepe de Chine! Earlier I ordered and reluctantly used this gorgeous silk for a dress […]

Panel Print Halter Dress

Last weekend, I realized July was almost over, and I with no finished MSN project for the month! WHERE WAS MY BRAIN?! PROBABLY BUSY THINKING ABOUT SUMMER. Luckily, I had two panel prints straight from Italy in my hands this month: this 70s-tastic Italian poly, and another try at the mountain scene that gave Ruggy such grief. Unfortunately (perhaps karmically?), a second attempt at reconstructing those mountains gave me nothing but misery. Well, it gave me gnashing of teeth and stomping of feet, maybe a good roll of the eye. I don’t do misery in sewing. And any fail in […]

Silk Twill Dress

The fabric is doing all the work in the dress, the incredibly beautiful Mood Fabrics’ Silk Twill, which I have been loving to look at since December.  Unfortunately, this particular silk twill is sold out but no worries, Mood Fabrics has a great selection of Silk Twills     I knew I wanted a simple dress for this fabric and while on vacation I did some pattern shopping.  I picked up Simplicity 8178 which looked just like what I had pictured in my head. This pattern had  nice features, pockets (always good), elastic waist for a better fit, crossover front […]

Rainbow Cutout!

While I was browsing the designer spring/summer collections online, I discovered these fabulous stripe dresses from Dolce and Gabbana.     Source: Net-a-Porter.com   I loved all of the elements of the dresses and the striped fabric and I decided that I could make this look work for my everyday life.  And I knew the perfect pattern I would use to execute my look. I picked Butterick 6351 and found this fabulous Italian Multicolor Striped Cotton-Lycra Sateen fabric from Mood Fabric.com. I cut the size 14 in the C cup. I added an inch to the length of the bodice […]
