Italian Jersey Floral Maxi (Maternity) Dress

Hello, Mood Fabrics! It’s been a few months since I’ve blogged for the Mood Sewing Network, thanks to some big events in my life. We’ve been dealing with job changes, a potential international move, and–oh yeah–a wee little person due in September. Not only have all the changes (and the pregnancy symptoms!) kept me away from my sewing machine, but sewing for a rapidly growing bump has proved daunting. For the first few months, maternity clothes were way too big, but all of my woven dresses quickly became uncomfortable. Since February, I’ve been living in knit dresses, like the Colette […]

A Casual Denim Summer Shirtdress

Hello Mood Sewing Network! Long time, no see! I took a couple months away from sewing and blogging this spring in order to take care of a few “life” things, and, if I’m being completely honest, to recharge my sewing batteries. But now… I’m baaaaack! And apparently I need to brush up on my blog photo skills, because I left my camera bag in all these photos! Whoops! Many moons ago, I pinned a photo of a woman wearing an oversized denim shirtdress that I found on the internet to my inspiration folder on my desktop. The woman looked so chic. Perfectly […]

Stretch Cotton Terry Dress for Graduation

This coming weekend is a busy one for our family, it is a nurse pinning, three graduations and Mother’s Day.  Well, celebrations of this nature calls for a new dress for Mom.  I loved this Mood Fabrics’ Taupe/Mocha/Black/Red Cotton Stretch Terry and thought it would work great for a dress.  I want to note that even though the fabric says terry in the description, it is a lightweight knit and I don’t feel it has that terry “feel”.    The knit will be perfect for s graduation and not look wrinkled after all that sitting.     I went with […]

Going Nude for Spring!

From the first moment I laid eyes on Vogue 1531 by designer Lialia, I knew I had to make this! The front with the dramatic cowl neck is beautiful. But the open-back design sealed the deal! This pattern just called out to me. There is something sexy, yet sophisticated and polished about this look. I feel what keeps it in this zone is the choice of fabric. So I immediately started searching for an amazing fabric choice. I couldn’t find anything quite right. It’s like when you have an idea of what you want, but not a definitive definition. But […]

Carolina Herrera Stretch Silk Dress

I scored big time finding this beautiful Carolina Herrera Leopard Printed Stretch Silk Twill  from Mood Fabrics.  I ordered the fabric with a wrap dress in mind, but after the fabric arrived I came across a photograph of the Carolina Herrera original and decided to follow the style of the designer with a close fitting dress. I reached for a favorite pattern I have made twice before. Vogue 9047 (now out of print but available on Etsy and other online sources). While the ‘original’ dress is a sheath, my dress features an empire waist giving me more control with the fitting through […]

Saint James Knit

Knowing I can sew a garment for a tiny fraction of the retail price simply thrills me, and is one of the reasons I continue to sew. I knew I could make the $200 Saint James Toledo striped dress I saw in a boutique in Charlotte, but I didn’t know that Mood Fabrics stocked Saint James knits ~ the very same fabrics! Upon finding Burda 6722, I knew it was meant to be. Mood offers the Saint James ponte knits in several colors, and I chose the white background with black stripes. I rarely sew Burda patterns (no reason in particular) […]

Fit and Flare Brown Bows Dress

Spring is almost here! What better way to start the season than with dress.  By now I’m sure you’ve noticed that my favorite thing to make is a dress. Last month I decided to “line them up” for the Spring/Summer sewing party that I scheduled with myself.  This is a solitary event that I planned for myself in hopes of getting back to spending more time in my sewing room.       This is the second dress posted for the March.  The fabric is another lovely fabric purchased from moodfabrics.com, brown bows printed on a cotton.  It is a […]

Marine Green Faux Suede Dress

I purchased this fabric from Moodfabrics.com a few years (!!!) ago because it was on big-time sale and I thought the color was pretty. The quality is really nice and you can NOT tell it’s fake except that it comes out of the laundry looking exactly like it went in. I lamented forever about what I wanted to make it into. I really wanted a skirt but thought the color would give me trouble when having to pair up with a matching top. McCall’s 7466 was recently released with the envelope drawing showing a view in faux suede, and I […]

Self-Drafted Wool Crepe Blouse and Pants

For the last two years I’ve been attending classes at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) here in New York City.  Last semester I took a draping class that was dedicated to designing soft silhouettes like dolman sleeves, pegged skirts, and cowls. At the beginning of the semester we draped in muslin and then moved on to knit jersey and woven crepe.  For our final project, we were asked to drape a two-piece ensemble with a resort feel (think winter cruise).  One of the pieces had to include a cowl — either front neck, back neck, or underarm cowl, or a […]
