Mixed Animal Prints Dress

This is Vogue 1314 by the fabulous designer, Tracy Reese. This is my fifth pattern from her. I own every single one she’s done for Vogue Patterns and hopefully I’ll get around to making them. I made this dress out of this gorgeous mixed animal print wool-blend jersey from Mood Fabrics. This fabric is gorgeous and truly luxurious. It was so easy to work with. Just keep in mind if you choose to purchase it that it’s only 54″ wide. This pattern was really easy for a Vogue “Designer” pattern. The most technical skill you need is the ability to […]

The Grim Reaper Gets a Makeover

What are your plans for All Hallows Eve? After wearing a ratty black cloak for 600 years, I was in the Mood for a makeover. How do you like it? Since I’m on call 24/7 , I need a dress perfect for morning, noon or night. Late one evening I walked through the walls of Mood Fabrics and found this gorgeous Italian wool double-knit. It was quite the bargain requiring only 1 ½ yards of fabric. After so many positive reviews on the Pattern Review website I put down the scythe, bought this Vogue pattern and made the dress in […]

A TNT in NYC Designer Tweed

This dress is all about the “famous NYC designer” fabric that I chose for it.  I did add some pink piping to bring out the pink flecks in the fabric but I knew when I found it in the designer aisle at Mood NYC, that I was going to use my TNT dress pattern for it.   Some stats: Fabric ~ 2 yards designer tweed fabric   Notions ~ 20″ metallic zipper pink piping pink rayon bemberg lining black rayon seam tape pink rayon seam tape bias binding 1/4 yard black lightweight interfacing   Construction Techniques: All of the construction […]

The Climbing Mt. Fuji Dress

Well, whaddayaknow? It’s a fancy new dress! Now, I’m not usually a print gal, but when I saw this Oscar de la Renta raw silk at the Mood NYC store, I HAD TO FREAKIN’ HAVE IT. No question about it. I brought it home, petted it about 1000 times, then… could NOT decide what to do with it! My original plan was to make Simplicity 1873 (how cute would that have been?!), but the selvedge was only 36″, so I couldn’t quite make that happen. I knew I didn’t want to break up or detract from the print, but I […]

Ruggy’s Mad Over Plaid

Oh Ruggy. Will I ever sew you anything? This plaid flannel was truly meant for my husband. I had all the best intentions of making him a cozy fall shirt, partially egged on by Amy’s rage-inducing make for her soulmate. WHATEVER AMY. As I pored over Mood’s online site, bookmarking fabrics to my portfolio (I love that wee feature, I can see all my wants right on one page), my mind quickly wandered back to myself, and I let out a little gasp when I saw this chenille. Unfortunately, Mind-Reading Ruggy heard my gasp, looked at my screen, and asked […]

Go Ravens! Purple Friday Dress

I get called out on my lack of purple during football season. It’s really almost embarrassing in my particular office. I promised myself this was the year I’d have my Purple Friday dress. And, just like it was meant to be, when Mood Fabrics sent me this aubergine double twill as a sample of the fall season, I got super excited and ordered two yards straight away. Yes, double twill cotton. The material is 100 percent cotton, twill with a diagonal weave and very dense. It would make a great jacket, or a mod like dress with structure (oh, you […]

Draped Aubergine Dress!

For Fall 2012, all shades of purple, plum, eggplant and aubergine are so hot for Fall that I had to embrace that color trend. This dress is New Look 6123.  It’s a juxtaposition of views C & D. I used a Ralph Lauren silk crepe de chine from Mood Fabrics.  It’s listed as “purple.”  I like to refer to it as “aubergine”.  It’s a pretty deep purple that looks almost navy or eggplant… depending on the lighting.  This fabric is gorgeous and it was a dream to work with.  And the drape is incredible. The alterations I made were to do a […]

Slow and Steady is the Mood

Well.  Y’all had some excellent suggestions on getting the sewjo mojo back, many of which I implemented to get this dress past the “folded up and staring accusingly at me” stage.  In fact, there were so many great ideas I’ll be doing a little credited wrap up on le blog later, a mojo-maker, if you will.  (Oh now come on, if that isn’t a cocktail waiting to be made I don’t know what is.  Must get Ruggy on that.) Speaking of Ruggy, my reluctant photographer was unavailable this weekend, so I had to go all self-timer on these shots.  Wanting […]

Yellow Tweed Sheath with Tie Collar

My newest dress is in a beautiful yellow Oscar de la Renta tweed from Mood. When I saw this fabric online, I knew it had to be mine. It’s mainly yellow, has loads of texture and sequins, and a total lux feel to it. I set about finding the perfect pattern to showcase it and had a bit of a roller coaster along the way. My first pick was McCall’s 5972, the curved collar design. I made a muslin but could not get the skirt portion to fit me. Fine. I’ll just use my TNT straight skirt pattern for that […]
