Hanging in the Stretch Aisle

I wrote a bit about this dress last week on my blog; it was giving me fever and I was not happy. Mainly, I’m mad at myself. I did everything I could to second guess this pattern, the Elisalex Dress from By Hand London. I made my usual modifications on the fly, thinking I’d head problems off at the pass. Turns out, this baby fit me right out of the exceedingly lovely box. (I’m talking about the packaging, folks, soon to be drooled over on my blog–these patterns are something you’ll want to display in your room, totally bookshelf worthy.) […]

Silk Brocade Quilted Jacket

Where do you look for inspiration when you create your garments? If you’re like me you look to the runway each season, to see what ideas you can borrow or knock off. I loved, loved, loved Proenza Schouler’s Fall 2012 collection, maybe because it relied heavily on brocade (and you know what a brocade addict I am). I already had some orange silk brocade from Mood NYC in my stash as a starting point, and I knew I wanted to make a quilted jacket. One of McCalls’ newer patterns, 6644, was designed to be used for quilted fabrics and I […]

Watercolor, Feathers, and a Drop-Waist Dress

Jamie Lau, one of the authors of BurdaStyle’s newest book Sewing Vintage Modern, wrote to ask me if I’d make a dress from her book. Of course I jumped at the opportunity, even though at that point I only knew that the patterns were classic designs from different eras in the 20th century. Jamie explained that my choices of patterns were a 1920s drop-waist dress, a 1940s men’s shirt, a 1950s gathered-waist dress, or a 1960s stirrup pant; she also let me know that I was free to modify the patterns as I wished. I ended up choosing the drop-waist […]

The Slightly Late, Dirty Thirty Dress!

I’m finally done with my birthday dress! “Wait,” you’re saying, “wasn’t your birthday, like, ages ago?” Well, yes, but Hurricane Sandy + birthday weekend away + Thanksgiving + numerous silly and annoying setbacks with the dress = here’s my birthday dress, now! Let’s just say I’m continuing the celebration! I went to Mood thinking about color– I had just switched over my seasonal wardrobe, tucking away my bright, pretty sundresses and replacing them with gray and navy sweaters. I’m not sure why I gravitate towards dark, drab colors in the winter, but I decided that I wanted a bold color […]

Double-Sided Wool Crepe Dress

I loved this pattern/silhouette as soon as it came out and I picked a green double-sided wool crepe from Mood back in August to sew it in.  I just needed the temperatures to drop to use it.  Of course since it’s the end of November, the temps have dropped so making and wearing the dress is perfect now. Some stats: Fabric ~ Green double-sided wool crepe from the Mood store in NYC Notions ~ Gray rayon bemberg lining One 6″ Riri zipper Vogue 8824 Pattern Alterations: Even though this pattern goes up to an XXL (size 24-26) in Vogue land, […]

Italian Riviera Peplum

Whew! You have no idea how excited I am to finally have this peplum “dress” completed. It’s taken me over a month from cutting the fabric, to prepping the fabric, to putting in the last hand stitches. Since the peplum and skirt are actually two separate pieces, construction took twice as long as I expected. But, I did my best to not skimp on any of the steps – except maybe that last press to get the garment into ideal photo shape. Why not cut a corner here or there? Because this garment is actually destined to end up […]

Ralph Lauren Houndstooth Wool Sheath Dress

You Ain’t Nothing but a Houndstooth Crying for accessories 🙂 I made the dress for football games since both of the college teams my family pulls for are black and something. I finished it yesterday and their football seasons are almost over – something tells me it’s not going to make it to a game this year. So…….How about lunch with the girls dinner with my hubby…. or the annual “Twas Two Nights” family holiday get together? I have seen houndstooth dresses e v e r y w h e r e this fall and couldn’t resist this Ralph Lauren […]

‘Puzzled’ Blue and Gold Silk Jersey Dress

After my Purple Friday dress, it feels great to be a in a bold and graphic print! But, let me tell you. This was the slowest silk sewing, evah. Let me splain. This is my second time sewing with silk jersey. I first saw this fabric in store at Mood Fabrics back in August. I loved the blue and gold because they are my sorority colors and I knew I could get some good wear out of it during chapter and regional meetings. Since the silk was 45″ wide, I bought five yards at $25 a yard. This Prairie NY […]

Mixed Animal Prints Dress

This is Vogue 1314 by the fabulous designer, Tracy Reese. This is my fifth pattern from her. I own every single one she’s done for Vogue Patterns and hopefully I’ll get around to making them. I made this dress out of this gorgeous mixed animal print wool-blend jersey from Mood Fabrics. This fabric is gorgeous and truly luxurious. It was so easy to work with. Just keep in mind if you choose to purchase it that it’s only 54″ wide. This pattern was really easy for a Vogue “Designer” pattern. The most technical skill you need is the ability to […]
