Firecracker Cotton

This Fourth of July, I decided to go a bit less literal. I’ve tried the red, white ‘n blue route before, but the outfit usually ends up doomed to the costume section of my closet (there’s also a cow print skirt in there for when I have to audition for the role of Hooker With A Heart Of Gold).  So when I saw this symphony of Italian stretch cotton color online at Mood Fabrics, I gleefully jumped into four yards of firecracker. I had previously pounced on a double face neoprene as well, found in-store at Mood Fabrics NYC […]

When Feathers and Silk Call Your Name

This was supposed to be a post about a large scale print wrap-skirt. I walked into the Mood Fabrics LA store with a vintage, peacock-printed, maxi-wrap skirt in hand. I was intent on finding a large scale print to make myself a new wrap skirt and I needed the vintage one to estimate the yardage needed—depending on the width, it was looking like 5-6 yards.  Nian (like Diane with an “N”) offered to help me find what I was looking for. On our way to the printed fabrics that can stand the wear and tear of a summer with four […]

Summer Seaside Dress

Hi, everyone! It’s finally summer here in NYC, so for my June project, I wanted to make a dress fit for a vacation (even though I don’t have any trips planned, boo). I feel like I’m ready to sail away on a yacht in this dress! Well, maybe a dinghy… not sure if I’m quite posh enough for a yacht… I picked out a lovely cotton voile from Mood Fabrics to keep the dress light and floaty on sticky days. Originally, I wanted a lighter color, but when I laid eyes on this blue, I was hooked (here’s a similar […]

Oscar de la Renta Summer Dress

Top Ten Reasons To Sew Another Summer Dress 10. The last one was too big. 9. I’m eager to make another muslin. 8. Too hot to wear anything else. 7. I’m on a quest to perfect the hand-picked zipper technique. 6. No buttons or buttonholes to sew. 5. Fabric requirement almost the same as a top. 4. Slim silhouette makes me look taller. 3. Cleaned out closet and the emptiness is disturbing. 2. Need something new to wear for my 30th wedding anniversary tomorrow. (You read that correctly.) And the number one reason to sew another dress ……………… I […]

Twisted Silk Jersey Maxi Dress

To celebrate the coming arrival of the summer solstice here in the US, what could be better than making a maxi dress out of a luxurious silk jersey from Mood Fabrics? One of my newfound favorite fabrics draped all over me? Yes, please! I’ve had my eye on Mood’s online silk jersey print section ever since making my silk jersey bow top last summer. I’m a bit embarrassed to admit I wear that top almost weekly. While I have a thing for bow tops, I know the reason it’s one of my go-tos is the fabric. I didn’t want to […]

The Silk Crepe de Chine Shirt Dress

Lately, it’s been feeling like monsoon season.  Hence the lack of blog posts.  But the great thing about rainy days is that I get to spend guilt-free days indoors sewing. This is another fabric-lead project:  meaning that the fabric inspired the look.  I’d been wanting a shirt dress for the season and this gorgeous fuchsia geometric print Thakoon silk crepe de chine from Mood Fabrics was a great choice.  Editor’s note: This fabric just sold out on our web site, but we do have some available at Mood NYC, if you’d like to place a phone order: 212-730-5003, ask for the […]

A 40’s Wool Crepe Wrap Dress

I know, this dress looks strikingly similar to the 40s wrap dress that Peter made for his identical cousin Cathy earlier this month, not to mention I’ve already dabbled in wool crepe for summer wear, as well as a full 40’s wool crepe dress. Yeesh. Ya think it’s possible for me to branch out a little here? Nuh uh, no way. Not me. I actually bought this fabric ‘way back when I was visiting Mood Fabrics in NY. I’m sure y’all are sick of hearing about it at this point, but heyyyy I’ll be working through that stash for at […]

Bold Stripes Jersey Dress

My plan was for a simple knit dress that would be comfortable and cool for an outdoor wedding and I found just the right fabric for a bold and bright dress.  My choice was Mood Fabrics’ Multicolor Stripe Rayon Jersey. I knew I wanted to use McCall’s 6752, the same pattern from my stripe knit top from my last Mood Sewing Network Post.  The description  of this fabric on Mood Fabric’s website states “this lightweight jersey would make a stunning top or pullover dress. ”  After reading this, I knew I had the perfect fabric in my cart. The fabric is a […]

Silk Crepe-Back Satin for the Prom

I’ve made a few prom dresses over the years.  Generally I shy away from this type of sewing because of the high expectations for the dress. I don’t want to dash someone’s dreams. However, every once in awhile someone special to me asks if I will make a dress for them…usually I end up agreeing. This year it was my niece.   This dress process started with a scouting trip to Mood Fabrics’ NYC store. Her color was mint green. So with the help of the staff at Mood, I came up with four swatches that I sent to my […]
