A Designer Interpretation in Linen

I like the designer, Barbara Tfank, for her ladylike dresses.  To me they express a classic elegance that epitomizes the look of the 1960s.  Her dresses speak of Grace Kelly’s and Jackie Kennedy’s style and panache to me.  So even though my original idea was for a sheath dress and jacket in black linen, this style spoke to me even more. Now there’s loads of black linen at the Mood NYC and LA stores and online at MoodFabrics.com. I know linen is a basic and not a flashy designer fabric BUT it is a staple in my summer wardrobe. […]

Satin Scoop-Back Dress

Guys! I love this dress. I feel like I need a wedding to wear it to now or something. The fabric is this cream satin from Mood Fabrics and I loved working with it. It seems to be pretty high quality but it was really affordable too, so that made me happy. Two tips for working with it though: #1 use glass head pins instead of plastic ones. This fabric isn’t very forgiving and leaves holes left by thicker pins. #2, if you’re going to be gathering at all, use quilting thread. I had issues with the thread breaking on my […]

Thakoon Cotton Dress for Summer

I’m sorry, but I just cannot get enough of these Thakoon cottons from Mood Fabrics. These are literally the BEST fabrics for summer, as far as I’m concerned. Thakoon is my new favorite  designer. If you haven’t had a chance to get your hands on his fabrics available at Mood, you’re in for a wonderful surprise —they’re so dreamy! This black-and-white Thakoon cotton I used here is super-soft and lightweight with the most beautiful drape. Since my pattern calls for a bit of contrast, I went with this lovely purple sateen. This one is soft and lightweight with a rich […]

The Abstract Silk Crepe Dress

This is Vogue 8849.  And I used view B. I used this absolutely amazing abstract floral print from Mood Fabrics. The fabric is called Springtime Floral Lightweight Silk Crepe.  And these pictures just doesn’t do it justice.  It was so easy to work with.  Not as lightweight as a crepe de chine.  But it still has a great amount of body and a lovely hand for draping. This pattern was great to work with. Well-drafted and easy instructions. My favorite part is that this pattern is a Vogue Pattern’s “Custom Fit”.  Which means, no FBAs needed!  And it does what […]

Fabulous Silk Georgette Birds Dress

I am just going to preface this post with a warning: This is my VERY favorite thing I’ve ever made. Forget everything else up to this point. This here, this is the winner. I initially saw this fabric on the Mood Fabrics Instagram (which, if you’re not lurking that – WHY NOT, THEY POST THE BEST FABRICS!!). Isn’t it fabulous? I immediately called the store and had them set aside 4 yards for me. When I finally had it shipped all the way to Nashville, I was amazed at just how wonderful it was in person. The designer is Marc […]

Cotton Jersey Layers Dress

Recently on Facebook, Mood Fabrics posed the following question to its readers: When do you put aside summer sewing and move onto fall and winter apparel? Is July too soon to think about cool-weather clothes? I must admit I have actually begun to think about my Fall wardrobe in July for the first time ever. I have even begun to look at Fall Runway shows on Style.com and even started a Mood Fall board, but……… hasn’t summer just begun? I may develop the discipline to sew a season ahead one day, but for now I’m sewing in the moment. As […]

Mapping My Mood – Part Two

Editor’s note: Guest blogger Karen of the blog Did You Make That is back again, with a post about her continued progress on the dress she’s making from a fabric she got at Mood several months ago. We’re glad to have her back! As I asked in a recent blog post, can one learn patience? Well, if you’ve been waiting for updates on my travails with the Craftsy Couture Dress course with Susan Khalje the answer is a resounding – yes! I’m so sorry, readers. I did the worst a sewing blogger can. I allowed myself to become distracted by […]

Firecracker Cotton

This Fourth of July, I decided to go a bit less literal. I’ve tried the red, white ‘n blue route before, but the outfit usually ends up doomed to the costume section of my closet (there’s also a cow print skirt in there for when I have to audition for the role of Hooker With A Heart Of Gold).  So when I saw this symphony of Italian stretch cotton color online at Mood Fabrics, I gleefully jumped into four yards of firecracker. I had previously pounced on a double face neoprene as well, found in-store at Mood Fabrics NYC […]

When Feathers and Silk Call Your Name

This was supposed to be a post about a large scale print wrap-skirt. I walked into the Mood Fabrics LA store with a vintage, peacock-printed, maxi-wrap skirt in hand. I was intent on finding a large scale print to make myself a new wrap skirt and I needed the vintage one to estimate the yardage needed—depending on the width, it was looking like 5-6 yards.  Nian (like Diane with an “N”) offered to help me find what I was looking for. On our way to the printed fabrics that can stand the wear and tear of a summer with four […]
