Silk to the Max!

Do you ever spot a fabric that you want desperately, but don’t really know what to do with?  I usually try not to buy fabric if I can’t come up with a specific plan for it as I don’t really have the space to store it, so I said no to this amazing silk crepe de chine TWICE.  Finally, on a third visit to Mood Fabrics NYC, I had a vision of myself wearing it from head to toe and snatched it up to make a maxi dress! Editor’s note: Take a look at all the silk crepe de chines […]

Silk Crepe de Chine Maxi

I can’t even tell y’all how thrilled I am to be in cahoots with who we all know are my favorite MSN ladies, Oona and Sonja. Truth, they originally planned this as a duo, in which I walked straight into that party and invited myself to be the third wheel. I can’t help it; I love being part of a Mood Fabrics sandwich. Especially when it involves Thakoon Crepe de Chine. I mean, COME ON. So, as we all know at this point – this is the Anna dress, the newest offering from By Hand London. For mine, I decided […]

Silk Dresses To The Instagram Power

Could mugs like these be up to anything good?  I answer with a happy NO.  Peter, resident photographer in mid-laugh over the level of our gin infused delight, would probably agree. At the moment, these sisters-in-cocktails are all quite sober.  One needs a little sobriety for the staggering amount of French seaming and blind stitching going on across the country.  Over the next few days, this wee chunk of MSN are all in Silk, and all in the same pattern. Why did we decide to tackle this self-imposed mini challenge?  You may put the blame squarely on the dreamy filtered […]

Menswear Suiting for Fall

This month’s garment is a combination of menswear suiting and wool crepe. A dress (yes another dress!) that works with my style aesthetic and the corporate dress code that governs my days…oh and most importantly I’m sewing fall now.  Yes, I know that there are still lovely summer breezes blowing and days full of heat and humidity…but every fashion magazine is telling me it’s fall…and quite frankly this year I actually want to sew fall early. So with two things in mind (designer interpretation and fall fashions) I went to the mens’ suiting department on the upper floor of the […]

Missoni-esque Jersey Maxi Dress

I continued the maxi dress theme with a fabulous maxi for me, purchasing Mood Fabrics’ Missoni-esque Jersey Print for the dress. The colors seem perfect for late summer into early fall, plus Missoni is a look I love. I selected McCall’s 6700 and I went to work. My work was short-lived, I did not order enough fabric the first time– oops. No worries, I went right to my Mood Fabrics’ order history, found the sku number and reordered more yardage. My package arrived in no time and back to work I went. I was careful to match the side seams […]

Italian Brocade Sheath Dress

About this time last year, Mood fabrics got in a wide array of Italian brocades with raised floral imprints. They were divine and I had a really hard time picking the exact one I wanted. Eventually I settled on this one in aqua with red, yellow and navy color accents. It looks like an abstract painting and the red bits look a little like dripping blood. It’s so interesting and unusual. Then, because I loved it so much, it sat around in my to-do pile before I could finally muster up the courage to cut into it. Unfortunately, after all […]

The End of Summer White Maxi Dress

This pattern has been on my “To Sew” list since last year.  I was determined to get it made this season.  And I did, in the nick of time! < This pattern is Vogue 1305.  And it’s a designer one — Lialia by Julia Alarcon.  She was also profiled on “All on the Line with Joe Zee” last season. The description of this dress is as follows: semi-fitted, lined, pullover dress (fitted through hips) has draped right side extending into sleeve, left side slit, shoulder opening, and back opening with button/loop. Note: shoulder opening can be worn as neck opening. I […]

Blooming Blues Maxi Dress in Cotton Voile

If ever there was a time where the fabric led in the creation of a garment, this maxi dress is it for me. When I saw this “Blooms Cotton Voile Print” in Mood Fabrics’ online collection, it just screamed, “Make me into a summer maxi dress – right now!!” Well, maybe it’s a bit too dreamy and romantic to actually have done any yelling, but you get my point. In my mind it was a maxi dress even when it was just a small square of digital fabric on my computer screen. Editor’s note: Lots more cotton voile prints and […]

A Mountain Of Jersey

There are clothes that women love on women, there are clothes that men love on women, and never the twain shall meet. Well, the fairer sex can usually go both ways, but the harder sex, if you will forgive the pun, can’t get behind certain styles: High waisted jeans. Bubble skirts.  Gathered waists. Drop crotch. So obviously, being away from Ruggy, I am consoling myself by making the things he will undoubtedly dislike, and reaping the praise of the female company I’m keeping at work. Is this to spite him? No! Never! Look, if my man’s not here to compliment […]
