Two Simple Knit Dresses for Fall

As much as I looove working with beautiful fabrics that require special handling and specific sewing rules, sometimes a girl just needs a simple knit dress to throw on when she wants to look classy but feel she’s wearing pajamas. Fortunately for me, Mood Fabrics has an incredible assortment of knits, from lightweight cotton to cozy wool. A little bit of everything, I like that! So obviously, I made two because one CLEARLY is not enough. I used the Lady Skater pattern from Kitschycoo for both dresses—this is a great basic knit dress, easy to customize by just changing up the fabric. […]

Ombre Striped Jersey Dress

I’ve wanted to make this dress ever since I first started seeing Marcy Tilton’s shingle dress (Vogue V8904) pop up around the sewing blogging world. I had my heart set on making it out of stripes since I loved the way the design of the pattern made them play this way and that. Then, Goodbye Valentino made the exact dress I’d been dreaming of for her July MSN make out of a navy and white striped cotton jersey (the same one I used for the bottom layer, which no longer appears to be available online at Mood Fabrics). I figured […]

Rayon Jersey Print Wrap Dress

Greetings from Botany Bay, one of South Carolina’s barrier islands featuring a hauntingly beautiful boneyard beach. I’ve made my first See & Sew pattern in this fun Lycra/rayon jersey print from Mood Fabrics. I’ve said I’ll never buy another wrap dress. I’ll never buy another faux wrap dress either. I considered sewing my jersey with Vogue 1314 for some time. I even went as far as to lay out the pattern and fabric, but the practicality of the Butterick 5873 won out over high fashion 😉 Is there a better pattern – fabric combination for everyday wear? No wrinkles, no […]

The Chado Ralph Rucci Wool Double Knit Dress

This garment is ALL about the fabric.  This amazing Chado Ralph Rucci wool double knit fabric was posted on Mood Fabric’s Instagram account a couple of weeks ago. After some discussion online, some drooling and a desire that just wouldn’t go away, I went to the Mood NYC store and purchased three panels, or 4 3/4 yards of fabric. Editor’s note: Here are two wool double knits we have online; both Mood stores carry many more colors of wool double knits. It’s an awesome piece of fabric with a lot of possibility so I went through several ideas of how […]

Silk Chiffon Slugger

Well.  Hello there, Tuesday.  Hello there, leg partially en-clad in whisper thin Silk Chiffon shot through with gold metallic thread.  I thought we’d never meet. Many tried to keep us from our scheduled match.  But this Labor Day weekend, I did little else than labor on you. There wasn’t much of you to begin with.  Just three yards.  But those few floaty inches had a sting like a bee.  I had to sacrifice some print matching for sure.  It took me five hours to adjust my stance against your grainlines, though your metallic crossgrain did help. Let’s face it, you […]

Marc Jacobs Cotton Baby Dress

During my last trip to Mood Fabric LA, I wandered down the cotton print aisle.  Right there, amid the floral cotton voiles and yarn-dyed shirtings, this Marc Jacobs print practically jumped into my arms (click HERE for a huge assortment of Marc Jacobs designer fabrics from Moodfabrics.com).  When it comes to cotton prints, I first need to fall in love with the print, then I need to fall in love with the hand of the fabric.  I would best describe this fabric as a lightweight cotton gauze. It has a floatiness to it that I haven’t ever seen before.  This […]

Silk to the Max!

Do you ever spot a fabric that you want desperately, but don’t really know what to do with?  I usually try not to buy fabric if I can’t come up with a specific plan for it as I don’t really have the space to store it, so I said no to this amazing silk crepe de chine TWICE.  Finally, on a third visit to Mood Fabrics NYC, I had a vision of myself wearing it from head to toe and snatched it up to make a maxi dress! Editor’s note: Take a look at all the silk crepe de chines […]

Silk Crepe de Chine Maxi

I can’t even tell y’all how thrilled I am to be in cahoots with who we all know are my favorite MSN ladies, Oona and Sonja. Truth, they originally planned this as a duo, in which I walked straight into that party and invited myself to be the third wheel. I can’t help it; I love being part of a Mood Fabrics sandwich. Especially when it involves Thakoon Crepe de Chine. I mean, COME ON. So, as we all know at this point – this is the Anna dress, the newest offering from By Hand London. For mine, I decided […]

Silk Dresses To The Instagram Power

Could mugs like these be up to anything good?  I answer with a happy NO.  Peter, resident photographer in mid-laugh over the level of our gin infused delight, would probably agree. At the moment, these sisters-in-cocktails are all quite sober.  One needs a little sobriety for the staggering amount of French seaming and blind stitching going on across the country.  Over the next few days, this wee chunk of MSN are all in Silk, and all in the same pattern. Why did we decide to tackle this self-imposed mini challenge?  You may put the blame squarely on the dreamy filtered […]
