Double-Faced Wool Crepe & Houndstooth Dress

My usual journey when starting a new garment is the fabric.  I roam the aisle of Mood Fabrics’ NYC store touching fabrics and waiting for the perfect piece to jump out at me, demanding to be brought home and sewn up. This time though, it was the pattern that spoke to me first.  It was Vogue 1370 ~ a sheath dress with fabric inserts and literally I saw the dress in black and white. With that idea in mind, I headed off to Mood to purchase fabric.  I don’t know about you, but me, I love a great wool crepe […]

Italian Brocade Holiday Top

Every year it happens—blink and the holidays are upon us. It’s Thanksgiving week  and the official start of the holiday season. I purchased this Italian “Sequin” Teal and Silver Brocade in September with plans for a holiday top. I fell in love with the photograph and then with description, “If you love sequin fabric but shudder at the thought of sewing with it, then this is the brocade for you. From Italy, this poly fabric features a sequin design of teal and metallic gunmetal. It’s lightweight with a crisp drape, and would sew up perfectly as dresses, tops, jackets and so […]

Sneaky Silk+Ponte Dress

I am calling this the sneaky dress because it looks like it should be separates, but it’s not! It’s actually one piece! I LOVE these kinds of dresses! Looks like a silk blouse with a high-waisted pencil skirt, without the bother of keeping a shirt tucked in all day and making sure things match in the morning (because, ew, all I wanna do is sleep right now). The pattern I used for this dress is the Sugar Plum by Lolita Patterns. Since it doesn’t require a lot of fabric to make up the top half (less than a yard!), I splurged […]

Little Bouclé Dress

I don’t really know what hit me. Let me rephrase. This black bouclé hit me like a freight train, I seized the roll, hugged it to my breast, and dragged it around the third floor of Mood until Kway and Eric assured me I could leave it by the cutting tables, it would be safe. YOU KNOW I WORRIED ABOUT IT, LIKE BAMBI’S MOTHER, TILL THE FIRST SNIP. There was no need for concern, the third floor is truly a piece of heaven. And apparently they filter something mind-altering into the air up there, as I not only chose a […]

Party Dress In Shimmery Metallic Silk Blend

More fabric to die for……. I was sold upon reading Mood Fabrics’ narrative of this silk/viscose blend and placed it in my online cart. ‘The drape on this silk and viscose blend fabric is just so perfect, and then when you combine it with the glazed metallic sheen…well, you have a fabric that’s to die for. Lightweight and softly pliable. Perfect for tops, dresses, unconstructed jackets and more.’ Seriously, how could I resist? The fabric didn’t disappoint ~ actually I want more! Slippery, you think? Nope. Flimsy, you suspect? Nope. The backing on the fabric produces the perfect texture for […]

Ready for Fall & Winter with an Italian Sweater Knit Dress

Where I live, fall comes without the trees changing colors. It’s a bit of a bummer. Still, you can tell that fall is in the air when all the girls start breaking out their sweaters, tights and boots. In preparation for Southern California “sweater weather” I recently browsed the sweater knit section of Mood Fabrics in Los Angeles. This Italian wool sweater knit caught my eye immediately. The fine gauge was cozy but not bulky. Warm but not too warm. The fine gauge was also perfect for the Rebecca Taylor sweater dress pattern (a.k.a. Vogue 1315). The pockets had me at […]

Sunday Best Wool Gingham Dress

When I picked this wool/poly-blend gingham at the Mood Fabrics NYC store, I knew exactly what I wanted it to be.  A sleeveless version of my TNT dress with white piping. I played around with several other options but I kept coming back to this simple silhouette which highlights the fabric, because that’s what I really wanted—to highlight the fabric.  Here are a few ginghams from MoodFabrics.com. I saw this picture of gingham-style outfits in the November 2013 issue of Vogue Magazine and I knew I was on the right track.  Even when making my wool bouclé jacket, I […]

Silk Jersey Twisted Dress Redux

Well, I did it again. I made another one of BurdaStyle’s Twisted Maxi Dresses out of one of Mood Fabric’s silk jerseys. And, there was no oops about it. I got so much use out of my first silk jersey maxi dress this summer that I just had to make another to carry me through fall and winter. Silk jersey is a delight to wear (seriously, I feel like I’m in pajamas when I wear these dresses yet they both look really pulled together), and the gathers in the front of this dress make it perfect for expanding over my […]

Madewell-Inspired Striped Silk Dress

This dress was inspired by a dress I saw at Madewell a while back. I’ve been loving the multi-directional stripes I’ve seen lately, but all the dresses I’ve found haven’t exactly been in a college girl’s budget. So I decided to just make my own! The fabric is this denim blue-striped woven from Mood Fabrics. I liked working with it for the most part but I did have issues with ironing. I ironed the dress, starched it. Re-ironed it, and starched it again and it still looks a little wavy, especially on the skirt. I don’t mind because the fabric smells […]
