Pink and Fuchsia Jersey Top

I’ve been rather shell shocked since completing the 30 Day Dress, and knew the only way back to the sewing machine was through instant gratification. This pink and fuchsia cotton jersey from Mood Fabrics was one of those fabrics I ordered just because…….  and it turned out to be my saving grace. Buy a fabric you love and the pattern will appear 😉 I couldn’t think beyond the word  e a s y  and selected Simplicity 1613, View D – a great remedy for the jaded sewer! View D requires crosswise stretch only so most any knit will work, but this cotton feels quite wonderful […]

Geometric Shift Dress!

Hello! Hope your weeks are all off to a great start! I’m so excited to show you my (literally) shiny, new dress! This is a Marc Jacobs cotton/silk blend that I picked up at Mood Fabrics NYC. It has a lovely satin finish so it feels extra fancy. As soon as I saw it, it looked me in the eye and spoke to me: “I’m a shift dress!” Who am I to disagree? (Check out Mood’s selection of geometric prints here!) The fabric sewed up easily, more like a cotton than a silk. I armed myself with a sharp needle […]

Floral Silk Dress for Spring

Well guys, spring has definitely sprung around these parts! And I for one could not be happier about it! This time of year I tend to have one thing and one thing only on my mind – silk dresses. Making them. Wearing them. Living in them for the next nine months… That and long, lazy, bike rides. Preferably paired together. At sunset. Sigh… paints quite a picture, doesn’t it? This month I was irresistibly drawn to this gorgeous floral crepe de chine from Mood Fabrics online. Silk crepe de chine is one of my all-time favorite fabrics to sew with, and to wear. […]

DVF-Inspired Wrap Dress in Silk Jersey

A couple of years ago, I was trolling around the local estate sales in my neighborhood and I came across one of the holy grails of sewing – a copy of Vogue 1610, a Vogue American Designer pattern from the 70s, this particular one dedicated to Diane Von Furstenberg. Not only did I score with finding the pattern, it was my size *and* I bought it for $1. That’s a pretty sweet score, so naturally I did with it what I do best – shove it in my pattern cabinet and forget about it for two years. When I finally […]

Green with Envy – Ralph Lauren’s Vibrant Green Viscose Matte Jersey – Vogue 8921

After seeing Episode 5 of Being Mary Jane, I was determined to find a vibrant green fabric to make a similar dress.  I searched the Mood online fabric store to see if there was something close to the color.  The first few searches turned up nothing I really liked.  Then in early March, Mood posted new arrivals to their store.  There was a huge selection of green textiles for the choosing.  I was one happy sewist. So with my Mood allowance, I selected Ralph Lauren’s Vibrant Green Viscose Matte Jersey. Seriously it’s a great fabric.  The recovery is excellent; […]

Floral and Lace Panel Dress Inspired by Clements Ribeiro

For March, the Mood Sewing Network challenge was to sew something “inspired” by the spring ready-to-wear collections with our monthly allowance.  I chose a Clements Ribeiro that I saw on Net-A-Porter.com. My inspiration: Clements Ribeiro S/S 2014 I chose Clements Ribeiro because I wanted to highlight a lesser-known designer.  And, I love this dress! I was drawn to the fabulous floral print and the back lace panels.  As you know, a fabulous (non-knit) print for spring is hard to find.  But luckily, I found this stunning black and white cotton-lycra medium weight twill at Mood Fabrics.com.  Along with this beautiful […]

Runway-Inspired Two-Piece Dress

I’m not someone who really follows runway fashion, and, prior to this challenge, I had never even heard of the designers I’m drawing inspiration from. But as I looked at many, many photos of runway shows, I kept coming back to Sea‘s spring RTW collection. The collection was split between looks that were tough, dark, and androgynous and looks that were romantic and feminine. I especially liked the looks where the designers used elements that usually look prim and proper and gave them a youthful edge by combining them with modern details like cut-outs and exposed zippers. I decided to […]

Orla Kiely Inspired Linen Dress

Good morning, Mood Fabrics! This month, the Mood bloggers had a fun challenge to conquer: pick a Spring 2014 designer collection, then make an outfit inspired by our choices. For me, the field narrowed quickly. There are many designers I love, but there is only one whose clothes consistently make me squeal in fashion joy: Orla Kiely. The Irish designer tends toward pieces that combine retro styling with heavy doses of whimsy, and this season’s collection is no exception. These clothes are heavy on linen, novelty animal prints, and plenty of pastel colors. It’s, essentially, what would happen if […]

Shingled Jersey Dress

Recognize this pattern? I barely do myself, but it’s Vogue 8904 sewn in a solid color. Generally, I envision my finished garment before beginning the project, but not so this time. Sewing is not usually like a box of chocolates, but……. I thought I was making a tiered t-shirt dress ……… to wear with flip-flops and Jack Rogers! Thank you, Mood for a great dress to wear just about anywhere except to the grocery store 🙂 Determined to familiarize myself with all knit fabrics, I ordered this navy cotton jersey after buying the Sewing with Knits Craftsy course. I was […]
