Black Wool Jersey Wrap Dress

You know what my closet is sorely lacking these days? A little black dress. Those are supposed to be essential, right? A dress to go with everything – for any occasion – easy to dress up or down, depending on said occasion. Little black dresses are also kind of boring. Which is why you gotta up the ante with some fabulous fabric and a killer pattern amirite? My LBD is actually a wrap dress – made with the softest, most snuggly wool jersey I’ve ever laid my hands on. I found this gorgeousness at Mood Fabrics in NYC – yep, […]

Classically Yours – Vogue 9017

Greetings from Talbots 😉 Contrary to most of the clothes I’ve sewn during the last year, my life is not an endless parade of beach vacations and parties. Such a pity! I am now trying to remedy my lack of everyday clothes with a few practical choices, and is there anything more useful and practical than gray ponte knit? Mood Fabrics compares this particular ponte to gray wool suiting, and the weave of varying shades of gray give the fabric an appealing depth of color. I could not pass up the interesting lines found in the sketch of Vogue 9017. […]

Red Crossover Top

You see these everywhere, the crossover top for fall and McCall’s 6991 is the perfect pattern for this type of top.  The perfect fabric needs to be a fabric that is the same on both sides, with that in mind I went with Mood Fabrics’  Red Silk Crepe de Chine which is so gorgeous in person.  This fabric has just the right drape for this top and added so much to the success for my crossover top.     At the McCall’s blog, you will find helpful hints for  this pattern.  I used several of these to help construct […]

Black and White for Fall Nights!

There is just something so classic and elegant about a black and white ensemble.  And I just can’t get enough of these wardrobe staples.  There are so easy to mix and match with other pieces in my closet. And one of the things that I’ve been craving most is a black guipure lace skirt.  And why not a white top with dramatic sleeves to pair with it! For the top, I used Vogue 8945.  It’s actually a pattern for a dess, but I love the sleeves… so why not a top?  I cut the size 14 and I only used […]

Floral Eyelet For Fall

In an effort to get some casual everyday wear into my extremely gussied-up closet, I snagged this warm reversible cotton eyelet at Mood Fabrics online.     Despite the impressive size of my mouth, I’m at a loss for words… although this project was involved, it went together simply and relatively quickly. A shirtdress with a princess seamed bodice, pleated front skirt…     And I guess you’d call it a gored back?  Next time I’d throw some pleats in the back skirt too, the pattern (Simplicity 2222 vintage) only provides for the front. Helps with the casual vibe, […]

Oscar de la Renta Taffeta Dress

What do you get when you cross an Oscar de la Renta Taffeta with a Kay Unger pattern and a left-handed seamstress? It’s not the first time I’ve sewn the mirror image of an asymmetrical pattern and I doubt it will be my last 🙂 Hello, it’s me…………… a n d  I  a m  s o  h a p p y  to be sewing whatever strikes my fancy again at the Mood Sewing Network! As soon as I wrapped up the final post-wedding details, I retrieved this Oscar de la Renta Poppy Red Floral Silk Taffeta from my Mood Fabrics […]

Pink Pleated Dress Cowgirl Style

You know when you just see fabric and you have to have it?  That is the case with Paradise Pink and Rosewater Geometric Cotton-Polyester Jacquard (now say that three times fast!).  This fabric just kept saying “buy me, buy me” and so I did.  Initially, I was thinking some kind of pants or shorts for me but the fabric was a bit too bright for me.  I knew this gorgeous fabric would find its way to the perfect garment.  I had purchased Butterick 5781 with Meredith (daughter #3) in mind, as I knew it  was the perfect style for her, […]

The Greener Side of Summer Dress

Good morning, friends!  Lately, I’ve been in a sewing rut. Or, rather: a blissful, completely intentional bout of sewing the same pattern eight million times. McCall’s 6696 is my platonic shirtdress and I can’t stop making new versions! It has everything I’ve long searched for in a shirtdress, including a properly constructed collar, separate waistband, and full skirt. Even better, it’s explicitly designed to be made in light, embroidered fabrics like eyelet and Swiss dot. After perfecting the fit on two sturdy versions, I gave into the temptation of an ethereal late summer dress and perused the embroidered section of […]

Hello-and-Goodbye Summer Dress

While the Northern hemisphere waves goodbye to another summer… I’m waaaay down in the Southern hemisphere in Australia, waiting for mine to arrive. I confess I am rather spoilt… we took these photos mid-August on a quiet local beach while walking the dog and I wasn’t cold, it was a beautiful day. Spring is nearly here & a sundress is an eminently sensible way to celebrate! Once I spotted this beautiful black & white lightweight stretch cotton on the Mood Fabrics website I was head over heels in love. I love a classic black/white print, however it’s the pop of […]
