A Peacock Blue Stretch Wool Sheath!

My preferred style of dress has always been a sheath dress.  I know a lot of women like skater styles or dresses with full skirts.  But I love a sheath dress.  And this pattern – Vogue 8872, which is a play off of the ever-so-popular Black Halo Jackie O Dress, is no exception. My preferred way to wear a sheath dress is close-fitting.   Sheath dresses look elegant and slimming, especially when they’re form-fitting (not skintight).  This is something you must keep in mind when picking fabric.  I like fabric with a little bit of stretch for wearing ease.  That’s […]

Winter Velveteen Vintage Simplicity Dress

Good morning, Mood Sewing Network! After sewing cute basics for a few months, my project this month veered back into fancy territory. When browsing Mood Fabrics in December, I fell head-over-heels in love with this Black and Brown Floral Cotton Velveteen. It’s a lovely, medium weight black cotton velveteen, with an allover copper brown baroque-inspired floral pattern and a surprising amount of cross-wise stretch. I snapped it up immediately, daydreaming about wintery dresses and jackets. The dress, obviously, won out in the great velveteen race! I had a copy of the above vintage pattern, Simplicity 5238, in my stash, which […]

A Quilted Party Dress!

This is the dress that Ruggy made. No really, though he didn’t stitch an inch of it, it wouldn’t have happened without him. (And by the way, he has sewn, I’m talking wooly welt pockets and silk skirts, but that’s a subject for another time.) When I came home with this riot of peach and black batting-filled quilted poly organza, I laid it out on the floor and laughed and laughed. RUGGY! I guffawed. THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST WINTER PROM DRESS EVER! I took his bemused silence as total acceptance. However, as things progressed, he found […]

Vintage Christian Dior Mohair Coat!

Every year I make a coat.  It’s something that I look forward to and I’m always excited when I plan my project.  For the longest time, I’ve had this gorgeous vintage Vogue Paris Original (#1023) – 1970s Christian Dior coat in my collection.  But I had never been able to find the perfect fabric.  I wanted something “fuzzy”, just like the pattern envelope. And I found fabric that was absolute perfection.  This heathered gray fuzzy mohair-blend from Mood Fabrics just epitomized everything I was looking for.  And as a plus, it was gray.  I am completing all the neutral outerwear […]

Snuggly Plaid Flannel Shirtdress

This month’s Mood Sewing Network project was all about cosy fabrics for me! The temperatures have dropped here in London over the last couple of weeks and all I want to wear is lots of soft and warm layers. I actually ordered this Blue Plaid Soft Cotton Flannel (unfortunately now sold out but there’s still a little left in red!) back in February as part of my very first MSN order but haven’t found the perfect use for it until now. I spotted the dress below on Pinterest a little while back and knew my plaid was destined to be […]

Italian Wool Cardigan Sweater

Just as the song states, “oh, the weather outside is frightful” that has been the case here in Missouri.   I just need to change the words from snow to rain, cold, gloomy and damp.  With the cold and gloomy in mind, I decided it was time to make something out of sweater knit.  I went with this Mood Fabrics’ Italian Wool Flamestitch sweater knit  in the blue colorway but do note if blue is not a color for you it does come in three other colors.  This sweater knit is just the softest and so cozy, perfect for yucky weather. […]

Two Very Different Wool Knit Dresses

Howdy Y’all! Well, it’s finally sweater weather here in East Texas. Sorta. Off and on at least! Which means that it’s time for me to do what I do every year around this time: freak out about my utter lack of cold weather clothing and start eyeing the blankets on the back of the couch maniacally, wondering if I can quickly drape and belt them into some passable semblance of clothing! That’s why this month my Mood Sewing Network makes are all about quick, but warm, wooly dresses. I needed something warm, and I needed something warm now.  (Before the weather […]

Red Silk Blouse – Perfect for the Holidays

Fabric and Pattern,  very important parts of constructing a garment, right?  Well, I had the perfect combination of fabric and pattern right in front of me and I kept missing it!  I purchased  Mood Fabrics’ red polka dot silk by Donna Karan and I just kept touching it and touching it.  I had purchased Vogue 1387 after seeing Erica’s gorgeous sleeveless blouse.  Then I had one of those light bulb moments – the long sleeve blouse from Vogue 1387 and the red silk would be a perfect combination.  This red polka dot silk is sold out but Mood Fabrics has a […]

Navy Blue is the New Black!

I have an affinity for black.  I usually have to show self-restraint in order to not stock my sewing studio with black fabric.  So when I came across this gorgeous navy blue, I awarded myself a reprieve.  I mean, it’s dark but it’s not black so that makes it okay! This Mood Fabrics fabulous find, a dark navy woven is from designer Theory.  And just as stunning as this fabric is, it’s equally unusual.  It’s a woven with 2-way stretch that feels and sews like a neoprene.  It’s magical when used on a structured garment as my skirt and also […]
