A Springy Cotton Sateen Shift Dress

I don’t know what the climate is like where you are, but here in Tennessee we are starting to get our first signs of spring. YES! I even noticed little daffodils creeping along my fence after I finished taking these photos. The temperature is still a little deceptive when there’s no sunshine where you’re standing (it’s not *quite* warm enough to go bare legged just yet!), but it’s quite a bit of an improvement over the snow and ice storm we had last week. Spring has sprung, my friends! And with that in mind, I give you my first warm-weather […]

Hot Pink Boucle!!

How  do you like our six inches of snow? We get ridiculously excited about every winter storm warning in the South, wipe out the grocery stores and cancel events in anticipation of snow. This ‘winter storm’ I hit the sewing machine with a color hot enough to melt the ice off the patio. When the skies turned gray my eye turned to this bright pink boucle on the Mood Fabrics website. It is soft, it is happy and it is well-behaved 🙂 My pattern is Vogue 9022  sewn last month in a color block style with Mood’s black and white wool crepe. This time I […]

Border Marc Jacobs Maxi Skirt

Oh, the maxi skirt, where have you been all my life?  I do love this look but needed a dressier maxi in my closet and in my wardrobe.  Enter this fabulous Mood Fabrics’ Italian Marc Jacobs Border Print and the idea of a straight maxi with a nice side slit.     For my pattern, I went with McCall’s 6755 and if you check out that pattern it looks nothing like my skirt.  The McCall’s pattern has a curved piece front and back, which I did not want or need for my skirt.  I just pinned all the pieces together, overlapping seam […]

Wool and Pleather Winter Minidress!

Hi, guys! Hope you’re all well and sewing up a storm! OK, question: do you have seasonal color palettes? I know I do! Sometimes I feel like my closet is split between two different people- winter me and summer me! In warm weather, I’m all about bright colors and fun prints, but in the winter, I wear much more subdued colors, like heathered browns, burgundies, or, my very favorite, greys. My cold weather clothing drawer is almost entirely grey! The unexpected benefit of this is that I have a really, really easy time getting dressed in the winter- my separates […]

A Folksy, Springy, Linen Dress

Hi everyone! So there is definitely a story behind this dress.  I had originally planned on making a spring jacket for the Mood Sewing Network this month.  Our winters here in coastal Texas are sort of all over the place, but more often than not we get that in-between weather – too warm for a full on wool coat, but too cool for just a cardigan, and often rainy.  Basically, the ideal weather for a light, casual, hooded jacket, which just happens to be a major hole in my wardrobe. I’ve been slowly working away, muslin-ing just such a jacket, […]

A Peacock Blue Stretch Wool Sheath!

My preferred style of dress has always been a sheath dress.  I know a lot of women like skater styles or dresses with full skirts.  But I love a sheath dress.  And this pattern – Vogue 8872, which is a play off of the ever-so-popular Black Halo Jackie O Dress, is no exception. My preferred way to wear a sheath dress is close-fitting.   Sheath dresses look elegant and slimming, especially when they’re form-fitting (not skintight).  This is something you must keep in mind when picking fabric.  I like fabric with a little bit of stretch for wearing ease.  That’s […]

Winter Velveteen Vintage Simplicity Dress

Good morning, Mood Sewing Network! After sewing cute basics for a few months, my project this month veered back into fancy territory. When browsing Mood Fabrics in December, I fell head-over-heels in love with this Black and Brown Floral Cotton Velveteen. It’s a lovely, medium weight black cotton velveteen, with an allover copper brown baroque-inspired floral pattern and a surprising amount of cross-wise stretch. I snapped it up immediately, daydreaming about wintery dresses and jackets. The dress, obviously, won out in the great velveteen race! I had a copy of the above vintage pattern, Simplicity 5238, in my stash, which […]

A Quilted Party Dress!

This is the dress that Ruggy made. No really, though he didn’t stitch an inch of it, it wouldn’t have happened without him. (And by the way, he has sewn, I’m talking wooly welt pockets and silk skirts, but that’s a subject for another time.) When I came home with this riot of peach and black batting-filled quilted poly organza, I laid it out on the floor and laughed and laughed. RUGGY! I guffawed. THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST WINTER PROM DRESS EVER! I took his bemused silence as total acceptance. However, as things progressed, he found […]

Vintage Christian Dior Mohair Coat!

Every year I make a coat.  It’s something that I look forward to and I’m always excited when I plan my project.  For the longest time, I’ve had this gorgeous vintage Vogue Paris Original (#1023) – 1970s Christian Dior coat in my collection.  But I had never been able to find the perfect fabric.  I wanted something “fuzzy”, just like the pattern envelope. And I found fabric that was absolute perfection.  This heathered gray fuzzy mohair-blend from Mood Fabrics just epitomized everything I was looking for.  And as a plus, it was gray.  I am completing all the neutral outerwear […]
