Easy-to-Wear Cotton Dress

Hey everyone! Well, the humidity has arrived, and so have the mosquitoes.  I think it’s safe to say that we are in the throes of summer here in the Gulf Coast.  Which can really only mean one thing for a gal like me – dresses. And also that my electricity bill is about to skyrocket, but we’ll save that sad tale for another day. I pretty much live in dresses from mid-April to November.  Sure, shorts might be the staple of summer for some people, but I’ll take a frock that allows for a little breeze to pass through any day […]

Neoprene Delight!

How’s this for a One Yard Wonder? It’s true – I made this dress with one yard of Mood Fabric’s Watercolor Clouds Digitally Printed Stretch Neoprene. There’s more where this came from too. Check it out here. I want the one with the lips if some cool blogger like Oonaballoona or Sallieoh doesn’t beat me to it 😉 Seriously, this is the best knit fabric ever…… It’s perfect for a fitted dress. I’m not even sure this is my shape, but it’s the shape of my pattern and the neoprene follows orders beautifully! My pattern is Vogue 9047, another wonderful discovery with its […]

Boldly Waiting for Spring in Red and White Cotton Print

Oh My, I would love for spring to come and stay in Chi-town for at least a week.  But I guess Chicago weather is what it normally is.  We have two seasons:  summer and winter.  The week before Mother’s Day we had temperatures in the 80’s.  But on Mother’s Day is was cold and damp. I was ready to show off my big hat and new dress when all hopes were dashed by the cumulative clouds and the strong trade winds of my fair city. But I braved the chill to take a few photos on Monday and Thursday.  This […]

City Breezes in Silk Chiffon

I’m smiling but I don’t mean it. Really what I’m doing is grimacing at this janky, but quiet, corner of the city I minced about in for 30 minutes, trying to grab a few uninterrupted timer shots, my photographer having Actual Things To Attend To. Here’s me looking at the cop parked a few feet away. This is Vogue 9076 in Famous Designer Silk Chiffon. I imagine this dress wafting about in a sunlit field in the south of France, not so much grazing the mix of concrete, dirt and graffiti at hand. Hey, here’s me NOT sitting on the ground! […]

A Spring Dress in Lightweight Wool Knit

This month I made a dress using a rose floral wool knit from Mood fabrics. The slight translucency of the fabric reminded me of the envelope example from Vogue 1285, which I have waited 3 years to find the perfect fabric for. I’ve never worked with this thin of a wool knit before and was afraid the fabric would stick to itself too much, especially at the front skirt overlay. Thankfully that wasn’t an issue. Since this fabric contains some wool, it’s a slightly warm dress, and I’ll probably save it for early fall or spring of next year. I’ve […]

Bright Blue Wrap Dress

Here it is – the bright blue wrap dress that I’ve had on my dream sewing list forever. Made from one of Mood Fabric’s silk jerseys, this wrap dress has been a long time coming. I’ve wanted to make a wrap dress as long as I’ve been sewing, even though, as I said back in November, I have never been quite convinced a wrap dress was a good style for my figure. Still, I wanted to give it a try. I had earmarked this particular silk jersey since I thought the color would be stunning as a wrap dress. (As an aside, a resent computer […]

Neoprene Jersey and Mesh Sheath Dress!

I’ve been obsessing over neoprene fabric for a while now.  And it seems like the more obsessive I became, the better the fabric is now.  Neoprene isn’t as thick and stiff as it was a few years ago.  These new and improved lighter weight “neoprene-like” fabrics are a dream to sew with and perfect for structured garments.  Which is why I picked this black/ivory abstract neoprene jersey.  Talk about hard to get!  I stalked this fabric for weeks.  It sold out and all of a sudden it was back! I knew it would be the perfect fabric for this dress. […]

Navy Reptile Print Brocade

Spring has sprung in Chi-town! I’m so glad the sun is shining and the flowers are starting to bloom. I cannot believe an entire month has past since I last blogged. I’m happy to be back. For spring, you would think that I would sew brighter colors to welcome the new season. But I couldn’t resist this beautiful navy reptile print brocade. This fabric is lightweight and falls gracefully around the body. It is perfect for the dress I planned to make for my daughter. I purchased the fabric last fall; it’s no longer available but Mood has a nice […]

A Polka Dot Halter Wrap Dress!

I’ve been really having an eye for vintage patterns lately.  I especially like the ones from the 1970s.  This one is dated 1980, so it still has that late 70s vibe. This pattern is Simplicity 9704 – Jonathan Hitchcock for Reuben Thomas front wrap dress with pleated front closing skirt and curved hemline. Tie neckline. I knew that I wanted to make this dress in a silk crepe, so when I started my search of fabrics I lucked up on this gorgeous Ralph Lauren Dark Blue (more like cobalt) Polka Dot Silk Crepe from MoodFabrics.com.  The hand of this fabric is […]
