Navy Blue Viscose Knit Dress

This fall/winter I am concentrating on long sleeve dresses, which are in short supply in my closet. I picked Vogue 1283 for my first one and knew I’d need something thin to handle all the gathers. I also wanted a fabric with some weight so that the dress would drape nicely. Enter this midnight blue solid viscose knit from Mood Fabrics. I swatched it since I’d never worked with viscose knit before. The description on Mood’s website is accurate, it is a dense fabric with a beautiful drape. I loved the asymmetrical bodice of this design but not the cut-in-one […]

Peacock Kaleidoscopic Neoprene!

It is said the two best days in the life of a boat owner are the day you buy the boat and the day you sell the boat.  I’d like to extend the joke to writing a book…… thrilled to sign the contract, but good gosh, were we ever happy to put the manuscript in the hands of the publisher! Honestly, how do some people manage to live these beautifully balanced lives? Writing and planning another wedding tipped the scales to all work and no play. But now, I am back at play… Recently I’ve been on multiple shopping trips with Mimi, […]

Linen Decorated Mini Dress

Guess who ran into some more Anna Sui at Mood. I swear, it’s like I’m one of those dogs that sniffs out truffles. It’s not like she has a specific named shelf. Sure, I find her in the “Designer” section…but this yardage was lounging on the bottom floor, in a colorful little bin of medium weight cotton & linen bolts. Next to shirting. NEXT TO SHIRTING. No offense, Shirting. You’re just not my cup of tea. But this craziness was right up my alley! My first thought was a maxi skirt, but in the end, it wanted to be […]

Simple Striped T-Shirt Dress

I’ve just got a simple outfit to share with you today as the garment I was planning for this month’s Mood Sewing Network project has taken slightly longer than anticipated, plus my weekend sewing plans were scuppered by lack of a zip! Aargh! Luckily I picked up quite the selection of gorgeous fabrics in the Mood Fabrics Los Angeles branch when I visited the U.S. last month and I’ve already sewn a couple of other bits up. I absolutely loved the LA store and found all the staff to be so welcoming; helping me pull out bolt after bolt as […]

A Glitzy Neoprene Maxi Dress

I refuse to let summer go. It’s still warm enough for sandals, for crying out loud! And yet, the siren song of Fall Fashion seduces…so I married a summery maxi dress with an autumnal neoprene. Truly, a great “transitional” fabric. I don’t believe I’ve ever seriously used that word in my life. Does this mean my closet is growing up? Growing up?! I WILL NOT HAVE IT! SEQUINS. THAAAAT’S BETTER. Sequins defy logic! They are appropriate no matter WHAT the season, and I’m pretty sure they have never, in the history of the world, been called “transitional.” Keeping the sequins confined to an […]

A Perfect Ponte Knit Dress for the First Day of Fall!

This is the perfect dress for the official first day of fall!  It’s super comfortable and a “wardrobe basic”.  It’s essentially a sweatshirt dress. The fabric is a Heather Gray Polyester Blend (poly/rayon/lycra) Ponte Knit from Mood Fabrics.com  that is probably one of the softest, yet at the same time – luxurious knits I’ve ever used.  I’m not just saying this because I’m a Mood blogger, but as far as ponte knits go, they have pretty much the best quality that I’ve ever encountered.  This knit reminds of a cashmere blend knit that’s used in high-end loungewear. What I love […]

Geometric Stretch Woven Dress

Summer is winding down here in the Midwest but occasionally it comes back with bursts of hot and humid.  I am not quite ready to move onto fall and winter sewing and knew I needed to sew up this gorgeous Mood Fabrics’ black and beige geometric squares stretch cotton woven (or you can go with the  cream and brown).  After all, this is wonderful fabric to feel and touch and I knew it needed to be a garment quickly.    I loved sewing it into this Vogue 1329 dress ( Kay Unger design). Just look at the details in the waist […]

Linen Tent Dress

For my Mood Sewing Network project this month, I wanted to switch it up a little and play with shapes and fabrics that I don’t normally gravitate to. Since we’re still experiencing a pretty intense bit of heat as the summer is sloooowly drawing to an end, the idea of a loose tent shape made with a breathable linen sounded pretty much perfect to me. I don’t know if this style is even flattering on me whatsoever, but right now comfy is winning out and I don’t even care. Normally, I don’t really like to sew or wear linen. I […]

Breezy Rayon Dress

Hi, guys! How’s everybody doing? I hope you’re all well! Today’s project is a good example of the sewing I’ve been doing this summer… fun fabric in a simple shape. Fussy sewing and fussy garments just aren’t very fun in the heat! So when I picked out this rayon print from Mood Fabrics NYC, I just wanted to keep it breezy! The fabric has a delicious crepe-y texture, and it’s ever so slightly sheer. Do I want to wear a slip in the summer? No. So, I went with a voluminous shape to counteract the transparency of the fabric. I […]
