Black Poplin Handkerchief Hem Shirt Dress

Is cotton poplin not the greatest fabric to work with? Of course it is. We’ve been getting a few warm days as spring slowly approaches, and this is the perfect fabric for warm weather day dresses. When I think of something easy to wear that packs a power punch on style and simplicity, shirt dresses are one of my favorite styles. I’ve made quite a few over the years, so I wanted something this time that put a different spin on the classic dress. That’s why I picked McCall’s 7351. My fabric is Jet Black Stretch Cotton Poplin from Mood […]

Ankara Blues

I’ve decided to embrace the fact that I have zero desire to sew for the season I’m in. (Whatever season we’re calling whatever *this* is now). This never-ending pseudo winter is making me blue! Of course in fashion, looking seasonally ahead is the norm. Spring is all over the runways and I am going to be SO READY. This is one of three wax print maxi dresses I’ve gleefully churned out over the course of February. I had plans to unveil them all in a massive, colorful post, but the short month had me scrambling to get shots of just […]

Oscar de la Renta Stretch Canvas Shirtdress

I had a difficult time believing this whimsical Oscar de la Renta print is canvas, but now, not only am I believer – I’m a canvas convert. Mood Fabrics offers quite the collection of canvas for both home decorating and apparel sewing. I knew I’d like any fabric designed by Oscar de la Renta, but I was surprised by its light weight and smooth texture. While this stretch canvas would work well with several garments, including jeans and jackets, I chose McCall’s 6520, a shirtdress pattern I’d sewn once before. I selected View D. Views C & D are designed […]

Knits for the Gold

Have you been watching the Olympics?  I have a bit and that got me thinking, knit fabrics are a bit like the gold in the sewing world, or at least to me. This transition period in fashion, moving from winter to spring, is always hard for me.  I am not ready to stop sewing winter garments and don’t know for sure what I want to sew for spring.  So for my first garment for this post, I went with a new release pattern, True Bias Nikko Dress and used this Mood Fabrics’ waffle knit.  I love this fabric and […]

Olive Modal Jersey Ebony Tee Dress

Hi there, guys! I hope you’re staying warm this winter and sewing yourself up some goodies! I’ve been working on a couple of slow, long-term projects that have left me feeling a bit antsy and itching to make something instant gratification that I could enjoy and wear now. I don’t know about you, but when I think ‘fast’ and (nearly) ‘instant gratification’ in regards to sewing, I always think of jersey. Luckily I had some beautiful jersey from Mood Fabrics just waiting for such a project. I bought a bunch of yards of this Dark Olive Modal Jersey awhile back with […]

Vogue 8921 In Black-Metallic Gold Foil African-Inspired Stretch Velour

Happy New Year! This is one of four projects that I’d hoped to finish before the end of 2017.  I barely made it finishing the hem on December 30th around mid-night.   This fabric is definitely the speaker.  No need for a lot of details to show it off.  So I decided to make another version of  Vogue 8921, view C, the first time I used this pattern was in 2014. Forgive if the photo quality is not the best.  It is brutally cold in Illinois.  So no outdoor picture.  No way, no how. My goal was to have this dress […]

Festive Brocade Holiday Dress

The holidays are here, and you know what that means – time to bust out the sparkly garb! Or in my case – if you don’t have a sparkly party dress, it’s a great opportunity to sew one up 🙂 While I have a great brocade skirt that I got a lot of wear out of last year, I wanted something fresh for this season – so I timed my next NYC trip to include a change to shop at Mood Fabrics for a festive brocade. I actually have very little experience with brocade – my lifestyle doesn’t warrant much […]

Merry & Bright!

If you’re looking for a reason to be Merry & Bright this season, look no further than Mood Fabrics!  Sequins galore abound this season on the store’s website, and I fell right in line upon seeing the glittering silver baby sequined fabric. To keep the focus on the fabric, I kept it simple with a shift dress using  New Look 6524 as my base pattern. Following Maria Denmark’s tutorial I removed the bust dart for a clean front bodice. The sequins are sewn on mesh and the fabric tends to s t r e t c h easily. Staystiching the shoulders, armscye […]

Periwinkle Silk Dupioni 1890’s Historical Costume

Hello everyone! Today I’m really excited to share a project with you that has been my focus for many months now – my late Victorian walking suit! Some of you may remember last year when I made my first historical costume for a Victorian Christmas event here in Galveston. I had such a great time, and learned so much making that costume that I was excited to try my hand at another for this year. And of course, none of this would be possible without Mood Fabrics! This year I really wanted my costume to be historically accurate to a […]
