One last coat for cool spring nights

My most sincere apologies, I might have brought the cold weather back with this coat. Mea culpa.  BUT WOULDJA LOOKIT THAT INTERIOR.  HOW COULD I RESIST?! One of the great things about visiting  Mood Fabrics in person: you get to know the people there, who in turn know the fabric.  When I ran up to my favorite top floor, my angel Eric greeted me with his sunbeam of a smile and said I have a couple things I think you might like. I knew I wouldn’t even have to browse that day. He has me pegged. This woven piece of madness is [...]

Wool and Leather Coat

Hi Ya’ll! I’m very excited to show you my newest make for the Mood Sewing Network! I know everyone is clamoring for spring, and the last thing you want to look at is another reminder that it’s still, alas, winter, but bear with me here because I’m really excited about this coat!   I actually spotted and fell in love with this Oscar de la Renta wool coating from Mood Fabrics’ online store before I became a Mood Sewing Network blogger.  It’s basically my dream coat fabric. It’s double faced, so it has a gorgeous weight to it, and it’s plenty [...]

Men’s Leopard Print Wool Overcoat

After flirting with the “urban lumberjack” look last month, it was time for a change. A big change. I’d purchased this Italian wool leopard print knit last fall, and in the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, I must thank my fellow Mood Sewing Network blogger  Ginger, whom I happened to run into at Mood Fabrics the day I was deciding on my purchase.  I knew I loved the leopard, but I wasn’t sure I could pull it off.  Ginger urged me to go for it.  The rest, as they say, is history. Originally, I thought I’d make [...]

A Classic Camel Hair Coat

Every year, I like to make at least one substantial coat. Last year, it was my beloved cashmere pea coat.  So this year, I decided it would be a classic camel hair coat. I wanted a coat that I would love and cherish for years to come… nothing trendy at all for this project. Just timeless elegance. I picked this beautiful camel-colored 100% camel hair fabric. It’s described as “a heavy-weight camel wool with a long brushed nap. Very soft, slightly spongy.” This is a napped fabric with a raised pile. Which means it’s best to layout your pattern and [...]

Black and White Wool Plaid Coat

It’s been a couple of months in the making, but I’m happy to finally announce that my plaid coat is finally finished! Making this coat was truly a labor of love. I chose to fully tailor the coat, which definitely added to the time and expense involved, but it also just makes the coat feel so much more substantial and nice. This is a piece I see myself wearing for years – it’s made to last that long, anyway! My pattern, a vintage Vogue pattern from the 70s, included everything I needed in the instructions to get the coat fully [...]

Men’s Donegal Tweed Winter Coat

With winter on the horizon, it’s time for true cold weather outerwear.  For me, that means wool. At Mood Fabrics NYC, I found a lovely donegal tweed — the name generally given to tweeds with bits of yarn in other colors woven in, even if they’re not made in County Donegal, Ireland.  This one is mainly a brown salt and pepper, but as you can see, there are other colors too, like rust and beige.  The weave is coarse but the hand is quite soft. Editor’s note: Lots of great pea coat fabric options at MoodFabrics.com. For the lining, I [...]

Leopard Print Coat in Stretch Cotton Canvas

I knew my fall wardrobe needed something big and leopard, finding just the right fabric was easy while shopping online at MoodsFabrics.com. I just put “leopard” into the search box and ta-da!, up popped this fabulous fabric: Italian Leopard-Print Stretch Cotton Canvas The pattern was an easy on for me to pick, Vogue 8884, which I had made for a spring coat back on this Mood Sewing Network post. I used the same construction techniques from the spring coat and knew the fit was good. That is such a benefit when using a pattern again. I’ve read that “leopard is the new [...]

Marc Jacobs Linen-Blend Spring Coat

A tailoring project for my next Mood Sewing Network project that has been a long time coming.  The fabric was moved all around my sewing room, just waiting to be made into a fabulous spring coat.  What fabric did I select?  This fabulous Mood Fabrics’ Marc Jacobs linen-cotton. I knew right when I purchased this fabric is was going to be a coat, Vogue 8884, in fact.  The fabric seems to yell, “good-bye winter, hello, spring.”  Or in my case with the Summer solstice approaching, “good-bye spring and hello summer!”  Whichever one you say, this fabric is fabulous to work [...]

A Brilliant Blue Lace Trench Coat

A couple of months ago, Mood sent us a fistful of swatches to show us what they had in new for spring. Of course everything on the swatch cards was something amazing – metallic linen, chambray, Swiss dot, spring boucles, matte jersey – but what really caught my eye was this bright blue eyelet lace, simply labeled “lace outerwear.” Never mind that I couldn’t think of any use for the stuff, I HAD to have it. I mean… look at that! It’s so gorgeous and blue, and those big embroidered flowers are my favorite thing ever. The fabric itself is [...]
