Men’s Plaid Overcoat

My first fall sewing project is a garment I hope to wear straight through till spring — a medium-weight, water-resistant overcoat/raincoat and my first plaid coat ever. I purchased the sturdy cotton/nylon plaid (below) at Mood Fabrics in New York City last winter.   It has a feel similar to that of a London Fog raincoat.  The plaid is muted enough to go with pretty much anything.  (You can find a large selection of plaid coating at Mood Fabrics here.) To make the coat, I used Burda 7780, a men’s coat pattern that has two front welt pockets and a half […]

Snow Day (Faux) Fur Coat!

Hi, guys! Hope all is well with you, and that if you’re here in the northeast, you’re not too tired from digging yourselves out of the snow! I must confess to secretly being glad about the snowfall… what better excuse to wear my new faux fur coat?! Friends, I’ve wanted a coat like this for many years (to be exact, since I first saw The Royal Tenenbaums way back in 2001). I’m so excited to finally have one! I know that sewing with faux fur can be intimidating to many, but at the workshop where I began working this past […]

Hot Pink Wool Coat

I am not fond of winter. Having lived my entire life in south Texas, I am a winter wimp. The only thing I do like about cold weather is the reason to wear cute outerwear. For the past 3 or 4 years I have purchased a coat in January after they are all put on sale, and have the standard colors of beige, black and white. (Also yellow, but that’s not exactly a standard color.) This year I decided to try my hand at making one in a bright hue. I swatched this bright pink and purple checked wool from […]

Men’s Cotton Twill Toggle Jacket

Seems to be coat season over here on the Mood Sewing Network! And for good reason – have you ever made a coat before? IT’S SO MUCH FUN. For my one unselfish moment of 2014 (everybody gets one), I decided to channel that energy into a new piece of outerwear for my boyfriend, Landon. Like I said, I love making coats, and I was already up and ready to make another (what? I told you they are fun!) – so I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and make a coat for Landon. Ain’t I so sweet? 🙂 […]

Fuchsia Bouclé Coat!

Hi, guys! I hope that you’re all well and enjoying the holiday season! I’m really excited to share this garment with you today. I worked on it for a really long time, so I’m very happy to be wearing it finally! I knew that I wanted to try a coat in this silhouette when I first saw one about a year ago. The cocoon-y shape paired with dropped shoulders makes for a really interesting and fun look. I’d planned to make one last spring, but couldn’t quite get things together, so I was determined to make one this fall. Well, […]

A Red Wool Designer Coat

When Vogue Patterns originally released V1419, a coat designed by Ralph Rucci, I’ll admit – my first impression was to hate it. It wasn’t until I went to NYC at the end of this summer and actually tried on the designer original at the McCall Pattern Company offices (wind machine was an added bonus!) that I realized the coat was actually pretty awesome and I needed a version for myself. That’s when the watercolor painting started… … which in turn meant that a coat was bound to happen sooner or later! My coat is the result of an intense sewalong […]

Hooray for Houndstooth

I often succumb to trends, in that I squirm uncomfortably over an endless parade of a suddenly coveted item, break down and snag everything I need to make it mine, then sit on my supplies until the trend is over and make something else. This ginormous houndstooth wool sent me in the opposite direction. When she arrived from Mood Fabrics, I thought I’d make a sleek tailored blazer out of her (but you know, super chunky. Obviously). However, when we got home, she whispered to me—actually she yelled at me, I mean, look at the size of that print: DON’T YOU […]

An Italian Wool Draped Coat

Yes I’m a crazy Australian sewing a wool jacket in spring… it’s for my ‘cold-break’ summer holiday in January. It’s one of those fabrics when you see it – you just need to own it. Well, that’s how it was for me anyway. I loved this Italian Carolina Herrera Black/White/Blended Blue Plaid Suiting from Mood Fabrics as soon as I saw it. I’m a complete sucker for anything blue. I adored how the weave of this plaid produces almost a holographic look and graduates softly between black/white/blue. It’s not a harsh plaid with solid lines. It is lovely to sew […]

Men’s Classic Mountain Parka

Today is the first day of fall and I’m oh-so-ready: I am delighted to present my just-completed eight-pocket mountain parka! This design is based on the famous 60/40 (referring to cotton/nylon) mountain parka produced by Sierra Designs (below) in 1968.  Back in the days before Gortex and other waterproof, breathable fabrics, a shell parka like this one was what you’d wear on a hike or backpacking trip.  The fabric is sturdy and water-repellant and the fit is generous enough for layering over sweaters and/or thermals. Part of the challenge of a project like this is that everyone knows what the […]
