A Faux-Fur Leopard Print Coat!

I’d been wanting to add a faux fur leopard print coat to my wardrobe since last year and I finally found the perfect fur! It’s the Brown and Beige Leopard Printed Stretch Faux Fur from MoodFabrics.com. J.McLaughlin Pella Faux Fur Leopard Coat   I’d seen this coat and knew that I wanted a similar minimal design (i.e. limited seaming) for working with faux fur. I reached for Vogue Patterns 9123, that I’d previously used in plaid wool.I used the same size as before, the size 14. I probably could’ve gone with a 12, but I wanted to make sure that […]

A Red Wool Coat and Rayon Jersey Dress for the Holidays

Good afternoon, Mood Fabrics! Today, I’m sharing two pieces that have been on constant rotation in my wardrobe. Usually, I make a couple of dresses for the holiday season, bright, cheerful pieces that I can throw on for office parties and cookie exchanges. Not that I ever go to cookie exchanges, mind you, but a lady can dream. (Or eventually break down and host one herself, I suppose.) This year, however, winter hit us early in Central Texas. We’ve already had our first big freeze and there actual snowflakes in our forecast for next week. I’m not holding my breath […]

Transitioning to Fall In Oscar De La Renta Checkered Coat

Transitioning to Fall in Chicago can be a mixture of three seasons on any given day.  We could start with cool, crisp sunny morning.  By mid-day it’s hotter than July.  Then early evening, it’s cloudy and raining.  We are so lucky.  It’s not every day that this happens.  Most days it is one or the other.  😉     The good thing is we experience every season, which gives us opportunities to wear many different styles and weights of clothing.  I’m happy to have many coats of all weights and styles.  My new  Oscar De La Renta Checkered […]

Emerald Cotton Riding Jacket

We all have a list. Whether you’ve collected it into a spreadsheet or Pinterest board, whether it’s posted above your sewing machine or lodges only in your mind, amorphous and ever-changing, every sewist has one. The list of dream projects. Mine is filled with all sorts of garments, from swirling velvet cloaks to exact replicas of every costume from Thoroughly Modern Millie. It’s rare that I actually sew something off this list, because how often do I need a floor length lavender silk gown with a bateau neckline? Sometimes, though, real world needs and dream projects collide. Such was the […]

Caped in Sweet Grape Faux Fur! Isn’t It Spring?

Yikes! It’s almost Spring. So why did I decide to make this cape? Because this sweet grape acrylic faux fur (#306542) is beautiful. Spring is not yet sprung in the mid-west. Days are sunny about 55 degrees, while night time temperatures drop to the mid or upper 40’s. I’ll get at least a few wears before warmer days truly come my way. Then when fall returns, I’m ready for it. 😉   Just as the season is changing the availability of some heavier fabrics are no longer available at Mood’s online store. Maybe […]

Plush Warm Faux Fur and Burda Style Magazine Coat

It is no surprise that it is too cold to breathe outside.  This year is no different from any other year.  We can count on single digits with sub-zero windchill temperatures in January. I am so happy that I finally made my Chocolate/Black Faux Fur coat.  It’s super warm and cozy, perfect for the breathtaking arctic winds that have found their way back our fair town.  This soft faux fur has been sitting waiting for me for over a year.  I must admit, I was a little apprehensive about making my coat.  Because I wanted it to be […]

Men’s Black Denim Zippered Jacket

Maybe it’s because my hair is graying, but I’m finding black denim much more flattering to me than blue denim these days. I’d recently purchased two and a half yards of stiff black 100% cotton denim at Mood Fabrics in New York City and I knew it would be perfect for a not-quite-winter shell-type jacket I could wear over sweaters. (This black Ralph Lauren denim would be perfect.)  I much prefer layers to a single cold-weather garment: with global warming, you never know what the temperature will be. If I told you my jacket was based on a 1930’s men’s […]

Crazy Aztec Wool Jacket

One thing I look forward to sewing every year is a new winter coat. I spend my summer planning out all the details and collecting fabrics and notions (PROTIP: While coatmaking can be expensive, the cost hurts a lot less if you buy the goods in phases 😉 haha), so that I’m ready to sew it up once the weather cools down. My last two coats have also been MSN projects – a dramatic, designer-inspired red wool coat and a black and white checked plaid wool peacoat straight outta the 1970s. I just love making coats, you guys. Since I’m […]

Men’s Plaid Overcoat

My first fall sewing project is a garment I hope to wear straight through till spring — a medium-weight, water-resistant overcoat/raincoat and my first plaid coat ever. I purchased the sturdy cotton/nylon plaid (below) at Mood Fabrics in New York City last winter.   It has a feel similar to that of a London Fog raincoat.  The plaid is muted enough to go with pretty much anything.  (You can find a large selection of plaid coating at Mood Fabrics here.) To make the coat, I used Burda 7780, a men’s coat pattern that has two front welt pockets and a half […]
