A Sequined Mermaid Costume for Halloween

Though I haven’t been able to make much time to sew lately, I was very motivated to make my two-year-old daughter a mermaid costume for Halloween this year. I can’t remember now whether the idea for the mermaid costume came from her or me. But, as soon as it was out there, I couldn’t let it go. I found myself excitedly scouring Mood Fabrics for fabrics that could be used to create something inspired by Disney’s The Little  Mermaid. I ended up choosing a green and blue sequins for the tail and a dark aqua silk jersey for the tail’s lining, the latter so that the inside of the tail would be soft […]

A Purple Safari Dress

“Pose for the camera, sweetie.” The above picture happens. Laughter ensues. And, I realize it’s best to be really literal. From then on I ask her to smile for the camera. But, I learned through the process that getting her to “pose” is one of the best ways to get her to pause long enough to avoid blurry photos. At least until I make the time to read up on ways to take advantage of faster camera shutter speeds! So, you get the wonderfully posed picture above since it’s one of the only ones that clearly shows off the front of my daughter’s […]

Happy Halloween from a Darling Little Duck!

Happy day before Halloween everyone! It’s my daughter’s second Halloween, and I just had to make her another costume. While she was the cutest little black kitten last year and I’d happily have her be a cat every year (because cats and sewing go hand in hand!), I decided to make her into a darling little duck this year. Why a duck? Well, because she really likes ducks and all things water related right now. She figured out how to say “duh duh” pretty early on, but it wasn’t her way of saying Daddy – it was her way of saying duck. (She used […]

A Black Kitten for Halloween

Happy Halloween everyone! When I was prioritizing my sewing plans for this month (so many plans, so little time!), I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make baby girl a costume for her very first Halloween.  She just loves cats, and I thought it would be pretty easy to make her a cat costume.  Well, more like a kitten costume! First, I needed a little fabric.  I chose Mood Fabric’s black wool crepe because of course she had to be a black cat.  It is Halloween after all!  Next, I needed a cute pattern.  I dug through my stash and came up with the Oliver + S […]

Designer Menswear Fabric for a Little Girl’s Dress

The menswear suitings call to me from the the pages of the Mood Designer Fabrics website.  All the houndstooth, herringbone and plaid patterns make me giddy even though I have no plans to make a men’s suit anytime soon. Gray Herringbone Suiting, Plum plaid Suiting, Beige Plaid Suiting, and a Khaki Houndstooth all made it to the final cut and I knew a little girl’s dress was the project to make. I settled on this Ralph Lauren wool houndstooth suiting sight unseen (which had me a little worried since I’m such a tactile fabric purchaser) along with a few […]

Anna Sui Designer Fabric Fancy Sweatshirt

We’re finally starting to get a chill in the air so it was time to tackle one of those “fancy sweatshirts” I’ve been seeing on the runway.  Luckily, the style was an easy sell for my preteen who is starting to experiment with some fun fashion choices.  The big section of Anna Sui prints at the front of the Mood Fabrics store in Los Angeles has always caught my eye so I knew I’d find a fun print there to use for the sleeves of the sweatshirt.  Many of the Anna Sui prints are silk (which isn’t ideal for a […]

Better-Late-Than-Never Baby Dresses!

Friends, I’m gonna let you in on one of my ugliest, dirtiest secrets. I hate sewing things for babies. I can feel the searing rays of your judgment! But let me explain– baby clothes are fiddly to make, fit for about 10 minutes, and never stay clean for very long. It’s a lot of work for very little payoff!  Plus, many babies are showered with so many tiny outfits when they could probably use a big box of Pampers much more than another cardigan! But, when dearly-beloved friends have babies, even the grumpiest baby grinch is occasionally tempted to dabble […]

Anna Sui Eyelet Dress for the Fall

I turned my last trip to Mood Fabrics in Los Angeles into a mommy/daughter date with my cute 8-year-old daughter.  Her baptism day was coming up and I promised to make her a new dress to wear.  We went straight to the fancy lace area, hoping to be inspired but nothing caught her eye except for a roll of white sequins (and I’m not a huge fan of bling).  Then we meandered down the eyelet aisle (though I wasn’t feeling hopeful we’d find anything there since we were just days away from fall).  That’s when I saw it, this gorgeous, […]

Marc Jacobs Cotton Baby Dress

During my last trip to Mood Fabric LA, I wandered down the cotton print aisle.  Right there, amid the floral cotton voiles and yarn-dyed shirtings, this Marc Jacobs print practically jumped into my arms (click HERE for a huge assortment of Marc Jacobs designer fabrics from Moodfabrics.com).  When it comes to cotton prints, I first need to fall in love with the print, then I need to fall in love with the hand of the fabric.  I would best describe this fabric as a lightweight cotton gauze. It has a floatiness to it that I haven’t ever seen before.  This […]
