It’s a Wrap!

What’s better than a little black dress?…… A little black dress with a big colorful wrap! This month several members of The Mood Sewing Network are sewing African Waxed Cotton. I enthusiastically agreed to the challenge having never sewn this fabric before, and when my six-yard piece of Spectra Green Waxed Cotton African Print with Gold Metallic Foil arrived I wanted to use every inch of this luscious metallic textile.Big wraps are such luxury accessories! It took me a while to learn how to wear wraps comfortably, but now that I know what to do with them I truly value these versatile pieces. When folded in half […]

Men’s Bias-Plaid Wool Cape

Capes are back! I’ve made all kinds of men’s outerwear over the last few years — anoraks, parkas, pea coats, varsity jackets, raincoats — but I’d never made myself a cape. Readers, it was time, and what better cape season than fall? At Mood’s NYC store, I’d recently purchased four yards of beautiful plaid wool coating in red, creamy white, and blue. I’m grinning like the cat that ate the canary all throughout these photos, and I don’t care. Just a few short days ago, I was certain I’d completely wrecked this Alice + Olivia sweater knit, found on the top floor of Mood Fabric’s NY location. For this summer girl, Mood’s magical top floor is one of the few reasons to celebrate the drop in temperatures. (Though this yardage was found in-store, here’s some sweater knit offerings if your fingers are doing the walking!) Cold weather. Short days. UGH. Invariably, my summer-lorn mindset […]

Hooray for Houndstooth

I often succumb to trends, in that I squirm uncomfortably over an endless parade of a suddenly coveted item, break down and snag everything I need to make it mine, then sit on my supplies until the trend is over and make something else. This ginormous houndstooth wool sent me in the opposite direction. When she arrived from Mood Fabrics, I thought I’d make a sleek tailored blazer out of her (but you know, super chunky. Obviously). However, when we got home, she whispered to me—actually she yelled at me, I mean, look at the size of that print: DON’T YOU […]
