Men’s Plaid Wool Flannel Shirt

Well, a new project for me! I’ve never made menswear before and I can happily cross it off my list now I really like making guys clothes because the fit isn’t much of an issue. You can just sort of approximate and you’re good to go. The fabric I used is this blue/charcoal plaid wool flannel from Mood Fabrics. It’s coming up in the pictures looking a lot more ashy colored than it is in real life but oh well. It was super easy to work with and I found myself preferring it over cotton even! Matching up the plaids […]

Madewell-Inspired Striped Silk Dress

This dress was inspired by a dress I saw at Madewell a while back. I’ve been loving the multi-directional stripes I’ve seen lately, but all the dresses I’ve found haven’t exactly been in a college girl’s budget. So I decided to just make my own! The fabric is this denim blue-striped woven from Mood Fabrics. I liked working with it for the most part but I did have issues with ironing. I ironed the dress, starched it. Re-ironed it, and starched it again and it still looks a little wavy, especially on the skirt. I don’t mind because the fabric smells […]

Oscar de la Renta Silk Print Skirt

So this skirt, guys this skirt! It turned out so much better than I thought it would. It was definitely an experiment in more ways, than one so I was not expecting that. Experiment #1, working with this Oscar de la Renta silk twill fabric from Mood Fabrics. Man, I was up and down about this silk. One day I loved it, the next day I thought it was too attention-grabbing, the next, well you get the deal. Fortunately the end result I LOVE. I guess it was just one of those fabrics that makes you second guess yourself during the […]

Thakoon Cotton Top

I had forgotten how awesome sewing with cotton is. I’ve realized that I much prefer it over, well satin. Ha I guess you could say I’m still a little scarred from that last satin dress I made. The cotton is this geometric print from Mood Fabrics. The designer is Thakoon and I think I got a little too excited when I realized who that was. (The September Issue!)  I was really impressed with him when I watched that so I’m glad to see he’s still designing. (Let’s pretend that I didn’t completely forget to iron the back of the shirt. […]

Satin Scoop-Back Dress

Guys! I love this dress. I feel like I need a wedding to wear it to now or something. The fabric is this cream satin from Mood Fabrics and I loved working with it. It seems to be pretty high quality but it was really affordable too, so that made me happy. Two tips for working with it though: #1 use glass head pins instead of plastic ones. This fabric isn’t very forgiving and leaves holes left by thicker pins. #2, if you’re going to be gathering at all, use quilting thread. I had issues with the thread breaking on my […]

Damask Brocade Skirt

Shirt: Gap    Shoes: Madewell Inspired by this lovely skirt, I decided to make a similar one using Melissa Esplin’s box-pleat skirt tutorial. She literally posted this the DAY I was starting on the skirt so that made my life about 10x easier. I like to think that it’s because we’re on the same wavelength but well, it’s Melissa Esplin, so let’s not get carried away here. Haha, I was really thankful for the tutorial, though. (Thanks Melissa!) It was super simple to follow and I didn’t change anything except that I made my pleats a little closer together. (3″ instead of […]

Canvas Book-Bag Tote

Ok so let me preface this by saying that I know these are not a big deal. But they were much needed and when are more bags ever not a good idea? Haha, really though. I used this canvas fabric from Mood Fabrics, and then Megan Nielsen’s tote bag tutorial. (The one on the right is the ‘thicker straps’ version and the one on the left is the original). The fabric was cool because it had a different texture on each side, so I ended up making two bags–one with the more smooth texture facing out, and then one with the bumpy side […]

Blue-Green Emerald Brocade Dress

Ok so can I just say that I am so incredibly happy that this dress turned out. The entire time I was making it I kept thinking to myself “what the heck am I doing.” Haha, I’m just not used to using such thick fabric for dresses so I was not expecting it to work. Turns out I was wrong because I love it! I actually think it might be one of my favorite dresses I’ve made so far. I love the brocade; because it makes the dress look so much more professional looking or something. I’m not really sure why […]

A Sequin Bodice Dress

Editor’s note: This month we are pleased to welcome Haylee, a college student from Utah, as our newest Mood Sewing Network blogger. She writes a blog called Threaded. She isn’t participating in the lace challenge but check out these chic lace skirts she and her mom made for the bridesmaids to wear at her brother’s wedding (lace from Mood!). Welcome, Haylee! This month I decided to re-make the Shimmer Down dress from Tobi. I fell in love with this dress when I saw it but I’m a more conservative dresser so the mini length wasn’t going to work. I […]
