A Manly Striped Sweater

I don’t tend to do much sewing when it comes to men’s clothing, much to my boyfriend’s disappointment. Not really sure what my hang-up is —every time I find myself working on the odd piece of clothing for him, I am reminded of how much I actually enjoy doing this type of stuff. Not a lot of fit issues, frills, or funky patterns. Just simple and straightforward and… safe. Since I average about one piece of clothing per year for my dude, I reckon it’s time to share for 2013—a striped sweater, in a very manly wool knit. We found […]

Sneaky Silk+Ponte Dress

I am calling this the sneaky dress because it looks like it should be separates, but it’s not! It’s actually one piece! I LOVE these kinds of dresses! Looks like a silk blouse with a high-waisted pencil skirt, without the bother of keeping a shirt tucked in all day and making sure things match in the morning (because, ew, all I wanna do is sleep right now). The pattern I used for this dress is the Sugar Plum by Lolita Patterns. Since it doesn’t require a lot of fabric to make up the top half (less than a yard!), I splurged […]

Cozy, Woolly Separates

Who doesn’t love to wear wool in the winter time? I feel like a broken record when I start singing the praises of wool, but foreal you guys—this stuff is awesome. It’s super warm and cozy, breathes very well (so you don’t get overheated in all that warm and cozy-ness), and it’s also antimicrobial, which means it naturally repels odors. Which means now you know why I wear so much wool and still manage to keep up with the laundry – it doesn’t need to be washed very frequently! Airing out is fine for day-to-day. Yay for being lazy! So […]

Cozy Plaid Flannel, Yeah!

I’ve always loved the plaid flannel shirts that everyone wears when the temperatures start dropping, but the selection (at least where I live) has pretty much hovered around disappointing. Ugly plaids, strange fiber contents, weird boxy fits—do not want! Which is why I took the initiative and made my own. LIKE A BOSS! Seriously, though, have you seen the cotton flannels at Mood Fabrics lately? The red and black check I’m rocking here actually comes in five different colors—I mean, what better excuse do you need to wrap yourself in a cozy plaid cloud? Bonus—the loft of this fabric makes […]

Polka Dot Fancypants

Dontcha just love it when you spend months looking for a specific dream fabric, then give up your search in angst, only to discover exactly what you’re looking for when you really truly aren’t looking? I mean, gah, finding good fabric can be just as difficult as finding a suitable romantic partner. Although the fabric search is usually a bit more fun 😉 When I originally got my hands on this “Peter & The Wolf Pants” pattern by Papercut Patterns, I immediately wanted to make them up in something polka-dotty. Problem is, this particular pattern calls for fabric with a […]

Two Simple Knit Dresses for Fall

As much as I looove working with beautiful fabrics that require special handling and specific sewing rules, sometimes a girl just needs a simple knit dress to throw on when she wants to look classy but feel she’s wearing pajamas. Fortunately for me, Mood Fabrics has an incredible assortment of knits, from lightweight cotton to cozy wool. A little bit of everything, I like that! So obviously, I made two because one CLEARLY is not enough. I used the Lady Skater pattern from Kitschycoo for both dresses—this is a great basic knit dress, easy to customize by just changing up the fabric. […]

Silk Crepe de Chine Maxi

I can’t even tell y’all how thrilled I am to be in cahoots with who we all know are my favorite MSN ladies, Oona and Sonja. Truth, they originally planned this as a duo, in which I walked straight into that party and invited myself to be the third wheel. I can’t help it; I love being part of a Mood Fabrics sandwich. Especially when it involves Thakoon Crepe de Chine. I mean, COME ON. So, as we all know at this point – this is the Anna dress, the newest offering from By Hand London. For mine, I decided […]

Thakoon Cotton Dress for Summer

I’m sorry, but I just cannot get enough of these Thakoon cottons from Mood Fabrics. These are literally the BEST fabrics for summer, as far as I’m concerned. Thakoon is my new favorite  designer. If you haven’t had a chance to get your hands on his fabrics available at Mood, you’re in for a wonderful surprise —they’re so dreamy! This black-and-white Thakoon cotton I used here is super-soft and lightweight with the most beautiful drape. Since my pattern calls for a bit of contrast, I went with this lovely purple sateen. This one is soft and lightweight with a rich […]

Fabulous Silk Georgette Birds Dress

I am just going to preface this post with a warning: This is my VERY favorite thing I’ve ever made. Forget everything else up to this point. This here, this is the winner. I initially saw this fabric on the Mood Fabrics Instagram (which, if you’re not lurking that – WHY NOT, THEY POST THE BEST FABRICS!!). Isn’t it fabulous? I immediately called the store and had them set aside 4 yards for me. When I finally had it shipped all the way to Nashville, I was amazed at just how wonderful it was in person. The designer is Marc […]
