Brocade Pants

“One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries.” A. A. Milne Had I known organizing my sewing room would result in a two week hiatus from sewing AND blogging, I bet I would still be in the midst of a huge mess declaring I couldn’t take the time needed to bring order and modest aesthetic appeal to my cluttered space. I reached a good stopping point and expect to finish up over the next few weeks with pictures forthcoming. At last I can sew in a pleasant surroundings! Last year I made five […]

Sequin Gown

I started the New Year generous in spirit by making a dress for my daughter. It’s been over 15 years since I have heard “Will you make me a dress, Mom? ” and she wasn’t referring to a Children’s Corner or Martha Pullen pattern anymore. Mimi wanted a formal dress. Not only did I make a dress for Mimi, but I made a dress for Mimi with my Mood Fabrics allowance. Bought at Mood NYC: champagne gold sequin fabric and matching china silk for lining. Due to the holiday season we did not decide on the exact pattern until the […]

Designer Top in Silk Charmeuse

I spent the first weekend of December in New York and was exhilarated by the Christmas sights and festivities throughout the city. I spent the second weekend of December visiting my parents in Southern Pines, NC, thoroughly charmed by small-town Christmas celebrations including the cutest horse and buggy parade. I went from being among millions of people dressed in black to hundreds of people dressed in red, inspiring me to do the same. On a mission to recreate this Elizabeth McKay top, I chose a red and white silk charmeuse from Mood Fabrics for my first attempt. I began with […]

Ralph Lauren Houndstooth Wool Sheath Dress

You Ain’t Nothing but a Houndstooth Crying for accessories 🙂 I made the dress for football games since both of the college teams my family pulls for are black and something. I finished it yesterday and their football seasons are almost over – something tells me it’s not going to make it to a game this year. So…….How about lunch with the girls dinner with my hubby…. or the annual “Twas Two Nights” family holiday get together? I have seen houndstooth dresses e v e r y w h e r e this fall and couldn’t resist this Ralph Lauren […]

Comfortable Organic Cotton Top

Thirty-eight degrees outside and a sleeveless cotton top? As temperatures go down thermostats go up …..sometimes to s u m m e r temperatures. Fortunately, I can pare down the layers to this top made of soft organic cotton from Mood Fabrics. This wonderful fabric is just as soft as those extraordinary l o n g Velvet cotton t-shirts found in cute boutiques at cute prices. The environmentally friendly fabric, free from pesticides and chemical fertilizers feels great against my skin and will allow me to comfortably sit through long meetings in hot conference rooms all winter long! Having successfully […]

The Grim Reaper Gets a Makeover

What are your plans for All Hallows Eve? After wearing a ratty black cloak for 600 years, I was in the Mood for a makeover. How do you like it? Since I’m on call 24/7 , I need a dress perfect for morning, noon or night. Late one evening I walked through the walls of Mood Fabrics and found this gorgeous Italian wool double-knit. It was quite the bargain requiring only 1 ½ yards of fabric. After so many positive reviews on the Pattern Review website I put down the scythe, bought this Vogue pattern and made the dress in […]

Tunic Time

If my favorite garments were ranked by how much wear they receive, this one would get the Blue Ribbon, the Silver Cup AND the Gold Medal. Now I get to see if my most recent tunic dress will earn its place on my list of favorites. Practicalities occasionally escape my aesthetic sensibilities, and I made the casual dress out of a silk charmeuse I bought at Mood Fabrics during my first, but hopefully not last trip to Mood Fabrics in December 2011. The easy structure, whimsical nature and versatility of many tunics continue to intrigue me. The trickiest part of sewing […]

Carolina Herrera Brocade Jacket

I sure have missed my blogging friends! I have been so eager to post anything just to say hello while I was taking care of a patient, hosting a party at my home followed by entertaining out-of-town company immediately upon returning from our unforgettable vacation to the Mediterranean. The patient is fine, the party was fun, the company found its way to a football game in Florida, and I hit the sewing machine after a four-week break. I imagined this beautiful brocade from Mood Fabrics as numerous garments: My husband suggested I make a close-fitting special occasion dress which […]

Celebration Time

On August 31, 2011 I turned over a new leaf I gave up buying Ready-to-Wear clothing for one year and vowed to make my clothes instead. Today I’m celebrating because I not only set out to do what I intended, but I completed an experience that brought me great pleasure and satisfaction. I must have needed a challenge! I was spending huge amounts of money on clothes and was constantly shopping. I bought way too many clothes that looked alike, and had entirely too many clothes that were barely worn. One day I snapped, gave up shopping, began sewing my […]
