Silk Crepe de Chine Wrap Top

I often think my Fall wardrobe is practically non-existent – most likely because I look like I’m coming down with something when I wear those traditional, Fall earth-tone colors. Fortunately the Pantone Fall 2013 report brings new colors to the mix translating into exciting possibilities for my closet! My first Fall sewing project needed to be a go-to garment. Being a lover of silk, I ordered this crepe de chine from Mood Fabrics by designer Thakoon—the gorgeous colors enhance every pair of pants I own! True, the fabric would make a beautiful special occasion garment, but I’ll feel special each time […]

Gettin’ My Preppy On

Madras, anyone? Finding this multicolored cotton patchwork on the Mood Fabrics website was almost as refreshing as a dip in the pool! I looked forward to putting a feminine twist on this classic preppy fabric and paired it with Butterick’s dress pattern 5917. Perhaps I’m a child at heart loving those madras children’s clothes filled with ruffles, but I thought this pattern had just the right feminine touch without the fussiness for the busy fabric. Actually, I’ve seen lots of RTW seersucker dresses sewn in this pattern. Since there was only one review on the Pattern Review website I wasn’t […]

Colorblocked Silk Skirt a la Kate Spade

“Well if it isn’t Sultry and Sunshine!” blurted the drunk man upon seeing my friend and me. The year was 1984. My friend resembled Angelina Jolie and well, I just looked like myself, only 29 years younger. It’s not hard to know who was Sultry and who was Sunshine. I’m not sure what little Miss Sunshine was wearing that evening but I doubt it was yellow. There is no yellow in my home and I did not own any yellow clothes until two years ago after a medium told me I needed more yellow in my life. (Blogged HERE […]

Cotton Jersey Layers Dress

Recently on Facebook, Mood Fabrics posed the following question to its readers: When do you put aside summer sewing and move onto fall and winter apparel? Is July too soon to think about cool-weather clothes? I must admit I have actually begun to think about my Fall wardrobe in July for the first time ever. I have even begun to look at Fall Runway shows on Style.com and even started a Mood Fall board, but……… hasn’t summer just begun? I may develop the discipline to sew a season ahead one day, but for now I’m sewing in the moment. As […]

Maxi Dress from Designer Tie-Dyed Silk

It pays to be naughty sometimes. Especially this time. Here is McCall’s 6700. “For Moderate Stretch Knits Only” I had sewn the pattern before and didn’t see anything stretchy about it…… and I had to have this Blue Tie-Dye Silk Crepe de Chine Border Print from Mood Fabrics…… and I had to make this maxi dress in this silk. At 5’2” I rarely wear border fabrics and I knew this was my chance. It’s been a long time since I broke the rules, but I think it was worth it 😉 Indeed – a perfect dress for Memorial Day […]

Bitten Again by the Ruffle Bug

While sewing my casual knits the ruffles were calling my name, and I answered. The craving to sew ruffles was stronger than any craving I’ve ever had for chocolate, but I tried to be practical and made an all-purpose white shirt. Of course it’s all-purpose! Mood Fabric’s Ivory Solid Goes with Everything Silk really does go with everything in my closet! It’s perfect with my re-fashioned floral pants…. party ready with my celebration skirt…. and very practical when combined with jeans for a walk in the park. That’s right – if Kate Spade wears silk to the flea market then […]

Farmer’s Market Cotton Knit Dress

I planned on publishing a post with F O U R garments and here I am with O N E. …….. and it looks really easy doesn’t it? Well, it wasn’t. I’m determined to master sewing casual clothes, but mistakenly I’ve confused c a s u a l with e a s y . After thumbing through a J. Crew catalogue, I ordered four fabulous knits from Mood Fabrics’ enormous collection with the plan of making four garments for casual wear. This was originally to be my Farmer’s Market dress; my toss-on dress for weekend errands. I searched for a […]

Mandarin Orange Lace Dress

Sometimes I make embarrassing mistakes, and for a while I thought ordering this white cotton/nylon lace from Mood Fabrics was one of those times. The flat lace reminded me of a tablecloth upon pulling it out of the box, revealing my inexperience in selecting lace. What can I say – I felt stupid for placing such an order when so many beautiful laces were available. B u t w h a t ’ s a g i r l t o d o ? After three worrisome weeks, I bought my first bottle of Rit Dye. Thirty minutes later….. I […]
