Welcoming Fall with Mustard and Chocolate
I love creating separates that can be mixed and matched throughout my wardrobe and worn over and over. I love clothes that I can get great mileage out of, yet has a bit of unique appeal. Like this amazing top. This is Vogue 1188. It’s currently out-of-print, but still very much of the moment. Dramatic sleeves are presently trending for this season and these sleeves are definitely bringing the drama. I call it sewing kismet and feel that the sewing goddesses have shone down upon me when a fabric is “sew” perfect for a design. And that’s how […]
Ruffles for Fall 2016!
I am currently working on transional garments, pieces that I can wear now and later. I’m also embracing some of Fall 2016’s hottest trends – Ruffles. I love a black and white outfit. These separates get the most mileage in my wardrobe. So let me tell you about these pieces: This Black Stretch Silk Georgette top is modified from Vogue 1308, which is a jumpsuit pattern. I took the bodice and lengthened it and I eliminated the back zipper to create a tuckable, pullover top. I doubled the asymmetrical ruffle for added volume and finished them with a rolled […]
While I was browsing the designer spring/summer collections online, I discovered these fabulous stripe dresses from Dolce and Gabbana. Source: Net-a-Porter.com I loved all of the elements of the dresses and the striped fabric and I decided that I could make this look work for my everyday life. And I knew the perfect pattern I would use to execute my look. I picked Butterick 6351 and found this fabulous Italian Multicolor Striped Cotton-Lycra Sateen fabric from Mood Fabric.com. I cut the size 14 in the C cup. I added an inch to the length of the bodice […]
Black and White is Always Right!
A black and white outfit is always très hip. You get pieces that can be worn together or separate. That’s the perfect way to add to your wardrobe. Especially when using seasonless fabrics. When searching for seasonless fabrics, I look for comfort. I also look for fabrics that will keep you comfortable in the warm months and can also be layered in the cool months. For my top, I used this gorgeous Black Sleek Viscose Ponte Knit. I love the weight of it. It works for this top and it would also work for a body con style dress. […]
Vogue 1507 | Paisley + Pinstripes Print Mixing!
I’ve never been the biggest fan of prints, so when I find some that I like, it’s true love! I fell in love with this crisp Dark Midnight Paisley Printed Cotton Poplin which is unfortunately sold out, but there is still some available in the yellow colorway. I knew it would be great for this top. And since I knew that I would be making the pants also, I wanted a complimenting fabric, so I picked this Italian Navy Pinstriped Blended Linen. It’s a cotton/linen blend with 1% of polyester. Just enough to keep them from wrinkling like crazy. Vogue 1507, […]
Classic Navy and White for Spring!
A navy blazer is classic and timeless. It’s also essential to my wardrobe and the reason I needed to feel that hole. I’d run across this fabulous Theory Uniform Navy Striped Stretch Cotton-Linen Blend from Mood Fabrics.com. I knew it would be perfect for a jacket. I selected Vogue Patterns 1439, from designer Anne Klein. I love Anne Klein patterns. The styles, especially the jackets and pants have excellent tailored details and classically-chic styles. Here is the ready-to-wear version which is currently sold out. I cut the size 14. I like to give myself room with jackets. Even though this is […]
White Button Down Shirt + Floral Print Full Skirt!
For effortless elegance, pairing a crisp white button down shirt with a floral full skirt is a no-brainer. A classic white shirt is a mainstay wardrobe staple that every woman should have in her closet. White button down shirts top almost every bottom well. And a fun floral full skirt is appropriate for so many scenarios. It works for so many occasions whereas a bodycon skirt would not. Every year, I have to update my classic white shirts. They occasionally become dingy and threadbare from wear and tear. The key to a great white shirt is being bright white, crisp […]
A Perfect Plaid Statement Coat!
Don’t you love when you find a hidden gem in a pattern? I do! And this is what Vogue 9123 is, a hidden gem. I completely overlooked this pattern since it was released. And lo and behold, the perfect lightweight coat pattern! We tend to have a lot of mild winter temps, and this coat is perfect for that type of breezy winter weather. My perfect fabric is this Rose/Gray/Off-White Flannelled Wool Coating. It’s very lightweight and feels almost like a wool suiting. I cut the size 14 straight from the envelope. I didn’t have to make any adjustments. I […]
A Silk Tunic and Faux Leather Leggings!
During the cool weather months, leggings are a go to fashion staple for me. Its a no-brainer because of how easy they pair with ankle boots and tuck into tall boots. For this occasion, I was looking for a dressier look. I decided to create a pair of stretch faux leather leggings using this Black Stretch DTY Pleather from Mood Fabrics.com. For constructing thsese, I found that a ball point needle and a teflon foot worked perfectly. I used McCall’s 6404 leggings pattern, view C. I tapered the leg down to a 10″ opening and used invisible zippers on the outer […]
