Kelly Green Silk Occasion Dress

The dress I’ve got to share with you today has been a real labour of love and I enjoyed every single second of making it. Even the whole day spent fitting the bodice! I like nothing better than a reason to sew myself something special and challenging and what better reason could I have than the wedding of my step-sister 10 days ago? I mulled over what I wanted to make for over a year and bought the fabric long before I decided on a style and pattern. When I visited Mood Fabrics NYC last April I spent a good [...]

Wool Gabardine Trousers and Comfy Tops

One of the joys of being self employed is that I often get to work from home or have a bit of down time between contracts to stay at home and sew! If I’m working at home I’m sure going to take advantage of the opportunity to dress as comfortably as possible but I’m a big believer in keeping a getting up and dressed as if you were going out to work routine anyway as I think this really helps with productivity. Plus answering the door to the postman in PJs at 3 in the afternoon on a Wednesday (yes [...]

My First Jeans and a Seasonal Velvet Cami

London has been clinging on to summer and I have been clinging on to my handmade summer wardrobe but with this month’s project for the Mood Sewing Network I have finally taken the plunge and started some projects more suited to the approaching season. Sewing my own jeans has been in my sewing queue for nigh on two years now and I am almost ashamed to admit that I actually cut these Ginger Jeans out well over a year ago. It is by far the longest a project has taken me from putting scissors to cloth and completion and I’m [...]

Tropical Denim Shorts and Back Cut Out Tee

This month’s project for the Mood Sewing Network was all about sewing a holiday wardrobe. With a couple of trips planned I had my eye out for summer prints which I’d still be able to get some wear out of at home in London. This Tropically Printed Denim jumped right out at me and I was ordering it without a second thought. Unfortunately it’s now sold out in both colour ways which I’m not surprised about. It was one of those instances when you see the fabric and instantly know what you want to make it into. In this case [...]

Linen Knit Bowline Sweater

Let me introduce you to my new favourite top! This little number was one of those projects led by the fabric. For some reason my favourite handmade garments always begin like that and this one has pretty much only been off my back to be washed since I finished it. I found this Theory Linen Knit in store at Mood Fabrics NYC on my trip last month. Can’t find it online but there are a handful of other gorgeous linen knits or the full Theory range of lovely unusual neutrals. I love a good browse of the Mood website but I [...]

Performance Spandex Activewear

One of my big sewing goals this year was to try sewing my own activewear as it is the one type of clothing that my wardrobe is fairly lacking in and which I do get a fair bit of wear out of yet have never tried to make. Why keep making party dresses which only make it out of the house once or twice when I can make something that I will really put through it’s paces and which looks interesting and challenging to sew to boot! Towards the end of last year I spotted the new range of Max-Dri [...]

Derek Lam Cotton Knit Jacket

The purchase of this gorgeous thick knit from Derek Lam for this month’s Mood Sewing Network project was a no brainer. Living in London my handmade wardrobe is constantly in need of snuggly, comfy garments suitable for layering and making them out of unique fabrics like this one means I still feel great wearing them. I picked this piece in Mood Fabrics LA back in September and whilst it was available online it’s now unfortunately sold out. However, hunting for it I did discovering this amazing striped French Terry from the same designer which has been immediately added to my [...]

Embroidered Raw Silk Mini Skirt

So this fabric is AWESOME. It was definitely the piece I was most excited about packing in my suitcase as I left the US last month. It’s a Rag & Bone embroidered raw silk and is one of the most unusual yardages I have ever laid my hands on despite being only $18 a yard. It’s a kind of home dec weight but so tactile because of it’s uneven slub and dense embroidery. The white stitching against the vivid indigo blue is beautiful and I think it’s the contrast between the uniformity of the embroidered design against the raw, natural [...]

Simple Striped T-Shirt Dress

I’ve just got a simple outfit to share with you today as the garment I was planning for this month’s Mood Sewing Network project has taken slightly longer than anticipated, plus my weekend sewing plans were scuppered by lack of a zip! Aargh! Luckily I picked up quite the selection of gorgeous fabrics in the Mood Fabrics Los Angeles branch when I visited the U.S. last month and I’ve already sewn a couple of other bits up. I absolutely loved the LA store and found all the staff to be so welcoming; helping me pull out bolt after bolt as [...]
