A Silk Tunic and Faux Leather Leggings!

During the cool weather months, leggings are a go to fashion staple for me.  Its a no-brainer because of how easy they pair with ankle boots and tuck into tall boots.  For this occasion, I was looking for a dressier look.  I decided to create a pair of stretch faux leather leggings using this Black Stretch DTY Pleather from Mood Fabrics.com.

For constructing thsese, I found that a ball point needle and a teflon foot worked perfectly.  I used McCall’s 6404 leggings pattern, view C.  I tapered the leg down to a 10″ opening and used invisible zippers on the outer seam and I added 3″ to the length.

Since these leggings are close-fitting like workout tights, I thought they would look best with a tunic.  I decided to go with this Forest Green Silk Double Georgette from Haute Hippie.  It was the perfect fabric for Simplicity 1064.

This tunic gives coverage and also style.  It sewed perfectly from the envelope.  I used a Microtex needle.  I finished all of the seams with French seams and used narrow hems.  It has 1/4″ wide elastic at the waist, but I thought that was such a plain look.  So I added an obi style belt.
The drape of the fabric is incredible.  As you can see, the movement is amazing on this breezy day.  The fabric has a slight amount of stretch.  Not a lot, but enough to make it comfortable and without risking any stress on the seams.  As you can see, it’s basically see through.  So if you were to use it as dress or such, a lining would definitely be needed.

Hi Erica – I look forward to each month to see what you’ve made – you choose such beautiful designs and fabrics!!!! So I was showing my friend your grey ponte dress (and the yellow summer one) and she flipped out over the shoes. Could you tell me where you got them (if there’s an online source, because we’re down in Orlando).

Thanks for making such lovely things!
