Relaxing in Silk Chiffon

After 8 full days of hollering with family and friends, I am worded OUT! My brain is in need of the kind of recharge where you spend all day at home in a robe. Unfortunately, I’m not one to spend all day in a robe. Robes are problematic for me. One, robes in our house are historically not fancy enough. Two, I don’t really sew things to chill in. Luckily, I tricked myself into sewing a fancy robe. This is Vogue 9253, made by the entirety of the sewing population last summer. The whole shebang is french seamed, a lovely […]

Three Cozy Sweaters

Okay, it is cold here, which really is normal for the end of December and all I want to wear is warm and cozy.  This Mood Fabrics’ Italian Gray French Terry is perfect, it looks just like a chunky sweater knit but it is really a comfy sweatshirt! In November on Instagram I started seeing posts about One Week One Pattern and that interested me.  What is One Week One Pattern?  One Week, One Pattern is a photo challenge to try and get as many sewists as possible making the most out of their sewing patterns, by wearing garments […]

A Furry Happy New Year!

I have been wanting to make myself a faux fur coat for a long time. This winter I finally took the plunge! At Mood Fabrics in New York City, I purchased 1 3/4 yards of a lustrous high-pile black faux fur.  It didn’t really look like an imitation of an animal — mink, maybe?   I thought it looked elegant and — most importantly — wearable.  While I love to look at some of the more “out-there” fake furs, I didn’t see myself wearing any of them. (You can see Mood’s online selection of fake fur here.) I wanted my […]

Festive Brocade Holiday Dress

The holidays are here, and you know what that means – time to bust out the sparkly garb! Or in my case – if you don’t have a sparkly party dress, it’s a great opportunity to sew one up 🙂 While I have a great brocade skirt that I got a lot of wear out of last year, I wanted something fresh for this season – so I timed my next NYC trip to include a change to shop at Mood Fabrics for a festive brocade. I actually have very little experience with brocade – my lifestyle doesn’t warrant much […]

Winter White Corduroy Jeans!

This has definitely been the season for me to sew more with napped fabrics. I don’t think I’ve ever been this drawn to corduroy as I am this season. The 70s fashion friend made a huge comeback this year along with its cousin velvet. And I can’t seem to get enough of them. I love wearing white jeans all year long. So a pair of white cords just made sense. I searched and found this amazing fabric: Whisper White Short-Piled Stretch Cotton Corduroy. The cords are so subtle that the fabric looks like velvet. Either way, this fabric is so […]

Merry & Bright!

If you’re looking for a reason to be Merry & Bright this season, look no further than Mood Fabrics!  Sequins galore abound this season on the store’s website, and I fell right in line upon seeing the glittering silver baby sequined fabric. To keep the focus on the fabric, I kept it simple with a shift dress using  New Look 6524 as my base pattern. Following Maria Denmark’s tutorial I removed the bust dart for a clean front bodice. The sequins are sewn on mesh and the fabric tends to s t r e t c h easily. Staystiching the shoulders, armscye […]

Periwinkle Silk Dupioni 1890’s Historical Costume

Hello everyone! Today I’m really excited to share a project with you that has been my focus for many months now – my late Victorian walking suit! Some of you may remember last year when I made my first historical costume for a Victorian Christmas event here in Galveston. I had such a great time, and learned so much making that costume that I was excited to try my hand at another for this year. And of course, none of this would be possible without Mood Fabrics! This year I really wanted my costume to be historically accurate to a […]

An Achromatic Jacket

After making Vogue 1493, a Koos pattern, as a gift, I decided I needed a version for myself. Not sure how I decided something for ME should be black and white, but it’s definitely the loudest black and white around! I chose two thick woven cotton blends from the shirting floor at Mood NY, which also houses leather, jersey, Liberty, wax print, denim, and a small section of this sort of snuggly thing. I go to this particular section of shelving a LOT. (A great online combo awaits here and here!) To be honest, that sleeve is not on purpose! […]

Little Black Dress in Rag & Bone Black Polyester Crepe – Vogue 9239 View F

OMG!  It’s been such a long time since I last blogged.  I’ve been struggling with projects and time to write it all down to share it with you.  Finally, today I was able to get a few pictures, some not the best quality, but good enough to show you my latest dress. Months ago, I came up with the notion of making some solid color dresses.  As I look through my wardrobe, I decided that I didn’t have any “new” solid black dresses.  So I search the Mood online fabric store and found this beautiful Rag and Bone black polyester […]
