A Little Pink Transitional Dress

Autumn is always a time of transition. Leaves fall, temperatures chill, and babies take over your life. Or, perhaps, that last one is only me. We welcomed our darling daughter in September and life is currently a whirlwind of diaper changes, gummy smiles, and tiny pink outfits. For me, the last six weeks have also meant navigating postpartum body changes. My measurements change hourly and my closet is a minefield of garments that are too big there, too small here. Even my library of previously adjusted, tried-and-true patterns are completely useless, until things settle out. Which means…time to try a […]

Plaid Cotton Flannel Button-Up Shirt

I don’t know about where y’all are, but we just got our first truly cold day this week – first frost was this morning, even! Brr! While I’m not terribly keen on the cold (I’m a Southerner, I hate the cold, and I also live in an old/drafty house), I do like the clothes that come out of hiding when the temperatures drop! Especially a nice cotton flannel – my favorite! I made this plaid flannel button-up a couple of months ago, in an anticipation of cooler weather. Let me tell you – it’s quite a downer to be working […]

An (Unplanned)Trio of Denim Kalles

You can probably guess this pattern by sight, though you’re likely confused as to why I’m wearing it IN A SOLID. I’ve got my reasons! Reason #1: My gals Lauren & Sallie both rocked this look in denim hues of linen & chambray, and I could not get their collective loveliness out of my brain. Reason #2: I decided to be sensible. (I KNOW.) I had every intention of making this up in a painterly floral Marchesa silk gazar! But I wanted a chance to play with the lines before cutting into Marchesa. And, this stiff cotton, snagged at Mood NY, is not […]

Take One – Two Sides, Please

Fall time which means I can make a new coat, I love making coats!  I was looking through Mood’s site and found this incredible fabric.  It is Mood Fabrics’ Tan and Gray Printed Cotton Twill with Navy Reverse Face  and it is such great fabric, it deserves a long name. This fabric intrigued me right away and while I was waiting for it arrive, I started dreaming of what to sew.  I decided a statement coat, which seems to be trendy in RTW, a bit like this one.  After I have an idea, it is time for a pattern, […]

Purple Guipure Lace Shrug

For the past few months I’ve been sewing a wedding gown for my good friend Christina. While the gown is oyster-white silk, Christina wanted to add a dash of color, specifically a deep, aubergine purple. There’s a wide purple ruffle on the bottom of her crinoline, and the ribbon that ties her corset is deep purple as well. I wanted to create a beautiful bridal shrug for Christina and at Mood Fabrics in NYC, I found the perfect purple polyester guipure lace.  It is, in a word, sumptuous. (You can view Mood’s online selection of guipure laces here.) To make […]

Party Time!

Raise your hand if you’re an Oscar de la Renta fan. That would be me! Frankly I should raise both hands. I think Oscar de la Renta makes the best party dresses on earth! One of these days I might just break down and buy one, but until then I’ll keep sewing O D L R inspired dresses. Mood Fabric’s Red and Black 3-D Floral Brocade has party dress written all over it, and I placed an order for 3 1/2 yards. Little did I know I would cut out three patterns before finding one to showcase the beauty and dimension […]

Plaid flannel for fall

It’s finally fall and that means…it’s plaid time! Actually, it’s always plaid time in my book. But it’s definitely not plaid flannel time until fall. For my first fall garment of the year I went big: a full-length dress. Dressing gown. Housecoat. Robe. Whatever you want to call it. It’s essentially a maxi dress that zips up the front, and it’s flannel, and it’s awesome. I used a vintage 1950s pattern, and you can see I really didn’t stray far from the envelope except to use plaid. I went with View B with the contrasting collars, cuff and tie belt. […]
