1970s Silk Leopard Dress

Happy New Year’s Eve Eve, everyone! I’m amazed at how swiftly this year has floated by – it seems like only a short time ago that I was writing my first MSN post of 2016, and here we are on the verge of 2017. This past year has been a rough one for a lot of people, and it’ll be good to put it to a close. But first – one more dress for the books! Leopard is one of those prints that people either looove or truly hate – personally, I can’t get enough of it! I found this [...]

Maxi Skirt Season

From Thanksgiving right up until I take the tree down, at all family gatherings, it’s maxi skirt, simple top, statement jewelry, swan mode on. AND I MEAN FULL SWAN. It’s just instantly dressy with zero effort! And all of the room for food! When I saw this bolt at Mood Fabrics (in store), my eyes popped. Christmas maxi, for sure. My fingers screamed as I ran my hands over its pure poly texture, and I howled with laughter. (To be honest, I’ve lost track of the content, but surely there’s some poly happening here.) And this green goodness is the [...]

December denial? Men’s shorts and short-sleeve shirt!

Who sews short sleeve shirts and shorts in December? I do! This month I sewed for an upcoming vacation to a tropical clime where I’ll be needing warm-weather clothes. I had two great Mood Fabrics to inspire me: a unique cotton seersucker like shirting from Opening Ceremony (not available online, unfortunately) and a beefy black cotton blend knit.  (Mood sells some beautiful black knits online, in a variety of weights. Check them out here.) For my shirt, I used a vintage 1958 McCall’s men’s convertible collar shirt pattern, 4723 (below).  I love the boxy cut of 1950′s shirt patterns, a [...]

Wool Plaid Wrap Mini Skirt

I ordered the fabric for this skirt back in August. It’s a textured woven plaid that Mood Fabrics titled “Park Avenue Wool-Blend” and is now sadly sold out (hence the reason I selected it in August when there were only a few yards left.) It sat around for several months until I discovered a pattern I had, Vogue 9209, that used this exact fabric for their envelope example drawing, and I suddenly knew what it would become. I cut a size 14 for the waist tapering out to between a 12 and 14 for the hips. Probably I could have [...]

A Faux-Fur Leopard Print Coat!

I’d been wanting to add a faux fur leopard print coat to my wardrobe since last year and I finally found the perfect fur! It’s the Brown and Beige Leopard Printed Stretch Faux Fur from MoodFabrics.com. J.McLaughlin Pella Faux Fur Leopard Coat   I’d seen this coat and knew that I wanted a similar minimal design (i.e. limited seaming) for working with faux fur. I reached for Vogue Patterns 9123, that I’d previously used in plaid wool.I used the same size as before, the size 14. I probably could’ve gone with a 12, but I wanted to make sure that [...]

Rayon-Silk Bomber Jacket for the Holidays

I love the look of a bomber jacket and started thinking about fabric and something for the holidays.  My thoughts lead to the hot fabric right now, velvet and I headed right over to Pinterest for ideas.  I was on track as I saw several velvet bomber jackets and I knew I had my Christmas look.  My fabric is Mood Fabrics Sultan Red Soft Rayon-Silk Velvet, which is available in 7 more colors.    The pattern I went with was McCall’s 7100, which is an easy to sew pattern but the velvet did provide the challenges.     [...]

A Red Wool Coat and Rayon Jersey Dress for the Holidays

Good afternoon, Mood Fabrics! Today, I’m sharing two pieces that have been on constant rotation in my wardrobe. Usually, I make a couple of dresses for the holiday season, bright, cheerful pieces that I can throw on for office parties and cookie exchanges. Not that I ever go to cookie exchanges, mind you, but a lady can dream. (Or eventually break down and host one herself, I suppose.) This year, however, winter hit us early in Central Texas. We’ve already had our first big freeze and there actual snowflakes in our forecast for next week. I’m not holding my breath [...]

A Late-Victorian Silk Taffeta Confection

Hello there Mood friends! It’s been awhile! Today I’d like to share a project with you that has been my main focus this past Fall.  As you can see by the photo, this is something very different for me — historical costuming! I made this ensemble to attend a Victorian themed event in Galveston, TX called “Dickens on the Strand” which is put on by the Galveston Historical Foundation as a way to celebrate the local historical architecture of the downtown district. For the sake of brevity (and not boring you to tears) I’ll just give the most basic facts today, [...]

Ralph Lauren Blue Nights Stretch Denim In Body Hugging Ginger Jeans

What better way to show off your body hugging Ginger jeans than a day at the Art History Museum of Chicago to see the Mainbocher Exhibit.   The Haute Couture Club of Chicago field trip took place of December 4th where several club members showed off their Ginger jeans. I was happily sporting my new pair made with Ralph Lauren blue nights stretch denim from Mood Fabrics.  I ordered five yards, enough for two pair and than some.  This is a great denim to work with.  It has just the right amount of stretch for a great fitting pair of [...]
