An Athletic Inspired Mini Wardrobe

Hey everyone! I hope y’all have had a great September – I can’t believe it’s over already! Was it just me, or did it seem to fly by particularly fast? This month for the Mood Sewing Network I decided to do something a little different.  Rather than making one garment, I spent each weekend sewing up one article of clothing with the aim of filling in a huge wardrobe gap for me – workout/leisure wear.  All these garments were really fast makes, and I approached each as a little experiment.  If you’ve ever looked at RTW active wear you know [...]

A Geometric Skirt & Faux-Wrap Top for Fall

Good evening, friends! There is a trend in my MSN projects, I’ve noticed. Almost every month, my post discusses weather and its influence on my sewing. While I’d love to buck that trend, we’re out of luck. This outfit is a direct result of one thing: my longing for autumn. While elsewhere leaves are changing colors and the air dances with chills, Texas hasn’t gotten that memo. It’s been nothing but sunshine, oppressive heat, and weather better suited for swim season. I’m sick of it! Bring on the colder weather already. I’m tapped out with summer, y’all. And so, we [...]

A Glitzy Neoprene Maxi Dress

I refuse to let summer go. It’s still warm enough for sandals, for crying out loud! And yet, the siren song of Fall Fashion seduces…so I married a summery maxi dress with an autumnal neoprene. Truly, a great “transitional” fabric. I don’t believe I’ve ever seriously used that word in my life. Does this mean my closet is growing up? Growing up?! I WILL NOT HAVE IT! SEQUINS. THAAAAT’S BETTER. Sequins defy logic! They are appropriate no matter WHAT the season, and I’m pretty sure they have never, in the history of the world, been called “transitional.” Keeping the sequins confined to an [...]

Men’s Plaid Overcoat

My first fall sewing project is a garment I hope to wear straight through till spring — a medium-weight, water-resistant overcoat/raincoat and my first plaid coat ever. I purchased the sturdy cotton/nylon plaid (below) at Mood Fabrics in New York City last winter.   It has a feel similar to that of a London Fog raincoat.  The plaid is muted enough to go with pretty much anything.  (You can find a large selection of plaid coating at Mood Fabrics here.) To make the coat, I used Burda 7780, a men’s coat pattern that has two front welt pockets and a half [...]

A Perfect Ponte Knit Dress for the First Day of Fall!

This is the perfect dress for the official first day of fall!  It’s super comfortable and a “wardrobe basic”.  It’s essentially a sweatshirt dress. The fabric is a Heather Gray Polyester Blend (poly/rayon/lycra) Ponte Knit from Mood Fabrics.com  that is probably one of the softest, yet at the same time – luxurious knits I’ve ever used.  I’m not just saying this because I’m a Mood blogger, but as far as ponte knits go, they have pretty much the best quality that I’ve ever encountered.  This knit reminds of a cashmere blend knit that’s used in high-end loungewear. What I love [...]

Geometric Stretch Woven Dress

Summer is winding down here in the Midwest but occasionally it comes back with bursts of hot and humid.  I am not quite ready to move onto fall and winter sewing and knew I needed to sew up this gorgeous Mood Fabrics’ black and beige geometric squares stretch cotton woven (or you can go with the  cream and brown).  After all, this is wonderful fabric to feel and touch and I knew it needed to be a garment quickly.    I loved sewing it into this Vogue 1329 dress ( Kay Unger design). Just look at the details in the waist [...]

Linen Tent Dress

For my Mood Sewing Network project this month, I wanted to switch it up a little and play with shapes and fabrics that I don’t normally gravitate to. Since we’re still experiencing a pretty intense bit of heat as the summer is sloooowly drawing to an end, the idea of a loose tent shape made with a breathable linen sounded pretty much perfect to me. I don’t know if this style is even flattering on me whatsoever, but right now comfy is winning out and I don’t even care. Normally, I don’t really like to sew or wear linen. I [...]
