Geometric Print Summer Dress

Greetings from sweaty Texas! Is it hot where you are? I’m sure it is. We’re into the dog days of summer around here, and even I – sun worshipper that I am – am finding myself retreating into the shade in search of a fan and a cool glass of something.  Anything!  In my sewing room I am still working on adding little, easy summer dresses to my wardrobe, including my most recent make for the Mood Sewing Network, this fun, bold, geometric print beauty you see before you. I think I’m starting to develop a bit of a pattern bad habit […]

A Whimsical Blouse in Anna Sui Silk

I always enjoy watching Anna Sui’s fashion shows. Her designs are playful and fun but not toddler like and twee. The fabrics she uses are usually prints and are often mixed together in interesting ways. When I saw this “Famous Designer Conversational Satin Faced Silk Chiffon” on Moodfabrics.com, I was pretty sure it was hers even though it wasn’t titled as such. I just adored the cats sitting on chairs, the red apples, the little scrolled frames and the texture, and snapped some up a few months back thinking it would certainly sell out quickly. (There is only a little […]

Floral Voile Shirt: Burda 6849

I had planned to make a dress, with piping, for this post. However sewing through my left index finger a week ago (ouch) has meant fiddling with piping was not terribly enticing. Perhaps next time! So I made a shirt instead. I took two lots of pictures – one just as a storm was hitting at lunchtime – then about 24 hours later on the beach… my Australian winter has been ‘all over the place’. I decided to use a few from both as the stormy backdrop really did make the colours jump off the screen – I habitually roll […]

Men’s Blue Linen Summer Coveralls

What does one make with three yards of blue linen from Mood Fabrics? If you’re me, you sew yourself up a pair of summer coveralls! I loved the color of this linen the moment I saw it.  Is it sky blue, azure blue, French blue, or Wedgwood blue? (I’m not very good at labeling colors.)  Regardless, I love it.  (You can check out Mood Fabrics’ selection of linen and linen blends here.) I had purchased Kwik Sew 3389, a men’s coveralls pattern, last year but wasn’t sure whether I’d actually wear coveralls, so it sat unused.  But thinking about this […]

Shake, Shimmer and Sparkle!

Vogue 1288 has been on my to sew list for a while.  So long, that the pattern is currently out-of-print.  I knew from the beginning that I would always make this dress using a sequin fabric.  It was just meant for it.  Then I ran across this perfect Blue and white Pailette Sequin Fabric at Mood Fabrics.com.  It was kismet! I cut the pattern size 12 and lengthened by 3 inches. The sequin pailettes are sporadically placed on a polyester mesh backing, so I decided to underline it with this polyester stretch crepe de chine. But when I tried it […]

The Summer of Paisley

Sometimes, a girl needs an extra-loud dress to get her through the horrendously hot and humid days of mid-July. I can’t say that I’ve ever considered myself much of a fan of paisley – some of the prints and colors remind me a little too much of the awful ties my dad work to work in the early 90s. Maybe it was less the print itself and more the recollection of the terrible fiber content. At any rate, I’ve never really been drawn to it, but something about this particular blue print at Mood Fabrics just took my breath away. […]

A Navy Cotton Voile Overlap Blouse

This summer I’ve been living in my silk crepe de chine Style Arc Dotty blouse.  I’m sure it’s terrible to admit that I do this, but I’ve learned that if I stick it in the dryer for a few minutes on the lowest heat setting, then it comes out nice and bouncy and wrinkle free.  I then want to wear it as soon as it comes out.  So, when I saw this sold out Helmut Lang top, I realized it was time to make another. This time though I wanted to try it out a different fabric – one that was […]

Linen lovin’

Are you shocked to see me in blue? With a black tank top, no less?! Me too. A warm toned gal, I am I am, so obviously the wall needed to bend to my fiery will. And once again, I’ve bent to the will of Anna Sui. This bolt of luscious linen positively leapt out from the shelf at Mood NY and punched me in the heartstrings. Surprise surprise, selvedge says: it’s Sui. If memory serves, I grabbed 2 yards, and immediately kicked myself when I got home and got to thinking. I wanted a maxi skirt to make the most […]

Feathers and Flowers – Simplicity 1103

Feathers not flowers!  At first glance of this colorful summer print, you think flowers.  I liked the placement of the feathers and decided to order two colors of this print, with the second one being the black, teal, red, and green.  This stretch cotton twill is light and breezy.  It has a smooth hand and sews up with no problem; easy breezy.  Don’t let the audacious print intimidate you.  It’s perfect for summer dresses, tops, and pants. Some people believe that less is more.  I believe it depends on how the “more” comes together to complete the desired look.   I’m […]
