Designer Silk Chiffon Panel Top

Spring?  Well, here in the Missouri  it comes and goes, in fact, Mother Nature is being quite stingy with the nice days.  There is a saying here, if you don’t like the weather today in Missouri wait a few days and it will be totally different.  My plan is to be a step ahead of Mother Nature and to be ready for spring.  I ordered this gorgeous Mood Fabrics’ famous designer blue/gray striped geometric silk chiffon panel last month with plans of a flowy top.  This fabric is no longer available but no fear, feast your eyes upon these […]

A Tropical Chambray Dress for Spring

Good evening, friends! Spring has finally arrived in Texas and with it have come my longings for flirty, feminine pastel dresses. Suddenly, all I want to wear are candy colored dresses with sweet, unexpected details. You wouldn’t believe the number of ridiculously frilly Anthropologie numbers I’ve pinned lately. To quench this sartorial impulse, I ordered a length of gorgeous chambray from Mood Fabrics, in the “Paradise Pink Orange” colorway. Believe the description, kittens. In person, this chambray is a very tropical color–bright pink yarn mixing with white for a perfect flamingo color. Maybe it’s my Florida roots speaking, but I […]

DVF Cotton Lace Skirt

Just a skirt?…… Not to me! When the DVF floral bordered cotton lace arrived on my doorstep last Spring from Mood Fabrics, I knew it deserved the royal treatment, but I didn’t expect this special fabric to be in queue for nearly a year. Greetings from Scottsdale, Arizona, the new hometown of my daughter and son-in-law.  It’s only 2,019 miles away from South Carolina. 😉 I once heard Susan Khalje say that she could keep someone busy for an entire week sewing a pencil skirt. Now, I know what she means, for I spent one week making my couture pencil […]

Carolina Herrerra Silk Metallic Brocade – three piece!

I confess I’ve had this fabric for months and the indecisiveness nearly destroyed me. It was so different to anything I had sewn previously and I was a little stumped… and terrified. 2.5m of Carolina Herrera silk metallic brocade from Mood Fabrics NY! So I spent lots of time draping a fabric over my dressform, wrapping about myself, sewing some small swatches and ironing them helps me better understand what type of garment the fabric might suit best.! I nearly made a Pauline Alice Quart Coat.  It would have been perfect… the fabric does crease beautifully into pleats… however I just […]

Men’s Cotton Slacks and Zip-Front Hoodie

The arrival of spring calls for spring sewing! At Mood Fabrics in NYC I found two beautiful lightweight fabrics I knew I could turn into some classic garments to carry me into the (eagerly awaited) warm weather. The first was a smooth cotton woven with a crisp hand, perfect for a pair of spring or summer dress pants. (You can find similar fabric at Mood here, here, and here.) My second fabric was a denim-colored, brushed cotton twill as plush and drapey as sweatshirt jersey.  I decided to use it to make a zip-front hoodie; I may use the remainder […]

Ralph Lauren Blue Polka Dot Party Dress

Howdy Y’all! I hope everyone is having a good month so far.  I’ve always been partial to March because it’s my birthday month, and this year I’m turning 30! So I thought a little party dress was in order.  I’ve been undertaking a few complicated, or at least time-cosuming, projects as of late and was in need of a palate cleanser.  This dress was exactly that.  From cut to finished in two days flat – that’s about as ‘instant gratification’ as my sewing gets! A few months ago I snatched up this Ralph Lauren Dark Blue Polka Dotted Silk Crepe from […]

Little Plaid Jacket!

Hi, guys! I hope your week is off to a great start! One of my favorite things about sewing clothes is that you can find unique ways to make a style your own. For example, you can take the edgy, menswear-inspired moto jacket, but make it up in pastel lace, and you’ve created a unique look that really shows off your personal style! So, for this little jacket, I wanted to try the classic Chanel-inspired silhouette, but use a casual (and extremely washable!) fabric that screams “me”! I knew right away that I wanted to use a plaid flannel cotton […]

Black Pants in Embossed Knit

Y’all, I’ve made some pants.   Big deal, right? I’ll bet you make pants all the time. You’re a wizard at crotch curves and the fish-eye dart and all the pants making things. Yeah. Well, in all the almost 7 years I’ve been blogging (!!!) I think I’ve made one pair of pants and one pair of knee-length crops. Oh and a pair of shorts or two. I’m not scared of them per say, it’s just that I’m more interested in making things that I can’t afford to buy or can’t find to fit me very well. Pants I can […]

Blue Plaid Flannel Button Up

It finally feels like Spring here in the Pacific Northwest.  The sun is shining, the forsythia is blooming, and my last handmade Christmas present from this past Christmas is finally finished.  Ha! Christmas morning my husband unwrapped the cut pieces for this blue plaid flannel shirt. I’d ordered this blue plaid flannel fabric from Mood Fabrics the second I saw it online since I knew it was just perfect for my husband.  He’s a blue button-up shirt kind of guy, and this particular pattern screamed Pacific Northwest. And, well, that’s exactly where we live. With the cutting behind me, I thought for sure he’d have a finished shirt in no […]
