Winter Velveteen Vintage Simplicity Dress

Good morning, Mood Sewing Network! After sewing cute basics for a few months, my project this month veered back into fancy territory. When browsing Mood Fabrics in December, I fell head-over-heels in love with this Black and Brown Floral Cotton Velveteen. It’s a lovely, medium weight black cotton velveteen, with an allover copper brown baroque-inspired floral pattern and a surprising amount of cross-wise stretch. I snapped it up immediately, daydreaming about wintery dresses and jackets. The dress, obviously, won out in the great velveteen race! I had a copy of the above vintage pattern, Simplicity 5238, in my stash, which [...]

Multicolor French Cotton Jersey – Katherine Tilton Top/Butterick 5925

Happy New Year all! It’s been such a long time since I’ve posted on the Mood Sewing Network. I’m very happy to be back! Today I’m showcasing an unusual fabric, multicolor french cotton jersey (FC19834). At least it’s unusual for me. I found it months ago while searching the Mood online store. It has two layers of fabric fused together. The top layer has a burn out affect with some parts of it unattached to the under layer. Too bad it is no longer available, but there are other options to chose from. I paired this unusual textile with a [...]

Floral Marc Jacobs Print Skirt

Hey gang!! I hope everyone is surviving winter, whatever that means for you. We’ve had some glorious early spring weather ’round my neck of the woods the past few days. All my plants are incredibly confused! I keep telling them to not rush it, that it’s going to get cold again, but unfortunately I have not learned how to speak plant language yet, so I don’t think they’re getting the message… This month I’ve got a fun new skirt to show you.  I’ve realized a bit of a pattern with my fabric purchases in the last year – if I [...]

Teal Wool Pencil Skirt

I seem to be in the mood for pencil skirts lately. I don’t quite understand my draw to them right now since they’re not ideal daily wear for someone who currently spends most of their time sitting on the floor reading books and playing blocks with toddlers.  Maybe it’s my subconscious mind’s way of telling me that I could stand to spend more time with adults?! This particular pencil skirt is the BurdaStyle Jenny basic skirt with a shortened waist and an added kick pleat, and it’s made using one of Mood Fabric’s double-faced wools.  The wool is thick and spongy and would make a beautiful unlined coat since being [...]

Snow Day (Faux) Fur Coat!

Hi, guys! Hope all is well with you, and that if you’re here in the northeast, you’re not too tired from digging yourselves out of the snow! I must confess to secretly being glad about the snowfall… what better excuse to wear my new faux fur coat?! Friends, I’ve wanted a coat like this for many years (to be exact, since I first saw The Royal Tenenbaums way back in 2001). I’m so excited to finally have one! I know that sewing with faux fur can be intimidating to many, but at the workshop where I began working this past [...]

Wool Knit Biker Jacket

G’day, it’s Australia Day. Today, despite it being the middle of summer in Australia I’ve made a biker jacket in some fabulous wool knit suiting from Mood Fabrics NY. I have a tendency to sew out-of-season, at least I’m ready for the cold of winter or heat of summer when they arriving. This jacket is another adventure into fabrics I’ve never sewn with before! A wool knit blend, this particular one is sold out – however this heavy black wool stretch suiting would be perfect and this wool ponte would also be a dream to sew with. I spend FOREVER researching patterns for the [...]

Hot Pink Wool Coat

I am not fond of winter. Having lived my entire life in south Texas, I am a winter wimp. The only thing I do like about cold weather is the reason to wear cute outerwear. For the past 3 or 4 years I have purchased a coat in January after they are all put on sale, and have the standard colors of beige, black and white. (Also yellow, but that’s not exactly a standard color.) This year I decided to try my hand at making one in a bright hue. I swatched this bright pink and purple checked wool from [...]

Men’s Floral Cotton Dress Shirt

I know it’s only January, but as far as my sewing goes, I’m already thinking spring. Last week at Mood Fabrics in New York, I stumbled upon a gorgeous Liberty-inspired print in cotton lawn and I grabbed enough for a shirt.  It may be freezing outside, but this vibrant floral shirting gives me hope that warmer weather is ahead.   (You can see Mood Fabrics’ selection of cheerful Liberty-inspired fabrics here.) My pattern is one I’ve only recently acquired on eBay, Butterick 6319, a mid-Fifties men’s dress shirt pattern that includes three collar variations.  I opted to make the spread collar [...]

A Handmade Travel Set

For the past couple months, I’ve been planning to up my luggage game. Over the years, I’ve made do with a fairly old suitcase (handed down from my parents – not sure exactly it’s age, but I know there are receipts in the pocket from when we went to Disney World in 1994, so at least 20 years!) and a really ratty/cheap duffel bag. My travel schedule is starting to ramp up this year, and one thing I don’t have is a duffel bag that is suitable for a weekend getaway. The aforementioned ratty bag was pretty small and difficult [...]
