Summery Separates Inspired by Rachel Comey

Hi everyone! Hope you’re all doing well today, the very last day of March! March holds a special place in my heart because it is my birthday month (and the majority of my family’s birthdays as well) and this year was even more fun because I got to try my hand at my first ever sewing challenge with the Mood Sewing Network! When we were given the task to choose a designer and make a completely unique look inspired by their 2014 spring runway collection I was pretty psyched – and a little nervous! This felt like being back in […]

A silk crop top inspired by Nicole Miller

This month’s Mood Sewing Network challenge was to make something inspired by the Spring 2014 Ready-To-Wear Fashion shows, and it was just that: a challenge. I actually love to watch fashion shows. Sometimes you can catch the live feed on youtube and see the collections exactly when everyone who’s actually at the fashion shows gets to see them. (Except don’t watch them with your male children. Designers love to send unlined things down the runway. Ahem.) Anyway, I thought this challenge would be easy. I already had a slew of designer garments pinned in my sewing inspiration folder. I’ll spare […]

Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann(a)

While looking for inspiration to fulfill the March Mood Sewing Network challenge of creating a look inspired by a fashion designer, I: Became obsessed with all things Anna Wintour resulting in a haircut my family loathed on me. Discovered Barbara Tfank, the LA designer popularized by Michelle Obama. Renewed my love of Ralph Lauren. Anna Wintour’s feminine flared skirts and dresses captivated me. Ralph Lauren’s cheerful black and white floral clothes dominated much of his Spring RTW runway show, and Barbara Tfank spelled it out with beautiful embroidered black and white linen garments(click here). As a result I departed from […]

Get Earthy in Marc Jacobs Silk Twill Wide-Leg Pants

My second designer inspired garment actually encompasses two design trends, earthy tones and “big girl pants”.  With Marc Jacobs silk twill I made the first garment of my earth-toned wardrobe.  This is the very first time I’ve sewn silk twill, but it will not be the last.  I love this fabric and would like at least two more pairs of pants out of it.  If you haven’t try silk twill, you should.  You will not be disappointed. It seems like earth tones are always on trend and can be anchor tones for any seasonal wardrobe.  I really like the fact […]

Runway-Inspired Two-Piece Dress

I’m not someone who really follows runway fashion, and, prior to this challenge, I had never even heard of the designers I’m drawing inspiration from. But as I looked at many, many photos of runway shows, I kept coming back to Sea‘s spring RTW collection. The collection was split between looks that were tough, dark, and androgynous and looks that were romantic and feminine. I especially liked the looks where the designers used elements that usually look prim and proper and gave them a youthful edge by combining them with modern details like cut-outs and exposed zippers. I decided to […]

Mood Fabric Artsy Graphic Print – Inspiration from the Spring/Summer Designer Collection 2014

Selecting one designer and one fashion trend was a tough job to say the least.  There is so much to choose from.  Many designers like Marni, Prada, Versace, and Jil Sander all showcased bold artsy graphic designs on the runway for Spring/Summer 2014.  This was one of my favorite trends of the season.  The next challenge was how to incorporate this audacious trend into my wardrobe. This is where Mood Fabrics comes in.  They have a beautiful selection of jersey prints that can be transformed into a great statement garment for the season.  Or if you are like me and […]

Separates Inspired by the Colors of Spring

When it was decided that we would all be sewing pieces inspired by the Spring 2014 runway, my mind immediately panicked. Runway? I can honestly say I have never even so much as glanced at a series of runway photos, let alone determined an outfit based on what I saw (I’m not saying this in an ~ooh, I’m so cool I just don’t even pay attention to fashion~ way, more like, yo clueless!). Furthermore, it’s difficult for me to grab “inspiration” from something without just blatantly copying it. I spent an entire month agonizing over designers, pouring over runway sets […]

Orla Kiely Inspired Linen Dress

Good morning, Mood Fabrics! This month, the Mood bloggers had a fun challenge to conquer: pick a Spring 2014 designer collection, then make an outfit inspired by our choices. For me, the field narrowed quickly. There are many designers I love, but there is only one whose clothes consistently make me squeal in fashion joy: Orla Kiely. The Irish designer tends toward pieces that combine retro styling with heavy doses of whimsy, and this season’s collection is no exception. These clothes are heavy on linen, novelty animal prints, and plenty of pastel colors. It’s, essentially, what would happen if […]

Shimmering Separates, Still Single

It’s weird, but there’s a specific time of day, in each specific season, when I can’t get enough of the skewed view from our apartment.  It’s well into cocktail hour as I type this, and the light hitting the buildings that fill our windows can’t be described as sun, more as afterglow.  indeed, even the use of “building” as plural is going a bit far.  There are two beasts that eat our glass rectangles onto the world, both of different brick, different perspective even, blonde diagonal on left and straight ahead redhead on right, and when you stare at the […]
