Ruffled Blouse Made With Anna Sui Silk Jacquard

How can it be the end of 2013?! This year has flown by and I feel very blessed to be part of the Mood Sewing Network. I know my sewing skills have grown tremendously, new techniques have been tried and fabulous fabrics from Mood Fabrics have been used. As I was planning my next Mood project, I realized my wardrobe was lacking a silk blouse. That led to my next project using Anna Sui Blue Sapphire Silk Jacquard. I went through several pattern options and selected Simplicity 1779, view E with the neck ruffle…. …and the long sleeves with the small cuffs. […]

Party Dress in Carolina Herrera Blue Silk Brocade

Santa Baby, Leave a sable underneath the tree for me…… 🙂 While waiting for Santa, I sewed one more holiday dress, this one for a January wedding. I have never seen a Carolina Herrera I didn’t love which includes this cobalt blue paisley silk-blend brocade from Mood Fabrics. Yum……. I was sold on the color alone until the fabric arrived. The quality of this brocade is unlike any I have seen or touched. It’s that good, and once again I was scared to cut my fabric. What would Carolina do? Santa baby……. give me an answer! I made a […]

Shiny Sateen Blazer!

Hi, guys! Happy Almost-Holidays! This time of year I often find myself with functions to go to after work, but I don’t have time to go home and change first. Sometimes I drag a cocktail dress to work and change in the ladies’ room, but I decided that it would be easier (and less stressful!) to make a day-to-night piece that I can toss on top of my work outfit when I feel like getting a little festive. Enter this blazer! I used two black cotton sateens, one very shiny (for the lapels and welts) and one more matte (for […]

Holiday Glam with Black & Silver Baby Sequins Dress

‘Tis the season to be sparkling!  What’s the holiday season with sparkle and shine?  I’ll tell you:  dull!  Don’t be dull, add some sequins to your holiday (and beyond) wardrobe. My latest addition was inspired by this gorgeous black and silver abstract baby sequins fabric from Mood Fabrics. When I fell head over heels in love with this fabric, I knew I needed a simple design that would let this fabric shine (pun intended) and let it be the star. I needed a design that has a limited amount of seams, darts, pleats, pockets and set-in sleeves.  This dress is […]

Men’s Donegal Tweed Winter Coat

With winter on the horizon, it’s time for true cold weather outerwear.  For me, that means wool. At Mood Fabrics NYC, I found a lovely donegal tweed — the name generally given to tweeds with bits of yarn in other colors woven in, even if they’re not made in County Donegal, Ireland.  This one is mainly a brown salt and pepper, but as you can see, there are other colors too, like rust and beige.  The weave is coarse but the hand is quite soft. Editor’s note: Lots of great pea coat fabric options at MoodFabrics.com. For the lining, I […]

A Manly Striped Sweater

I don’t tend to do much sewing when it comes to men’s clothing, much to my boyfriend’s disappointment. Not really sure what my hang-up is —every time I find myself working on the odd piece of clothing for him, I am reminded of how much I actually enjoy doing this type of stuff. Not a lot of fit issues, frills, or funky patterns. Just simple and straightforward and… safe. Since I average about one piece of clothing per year for my dude, I reckon it’s time to share for 2013—a striped sweater, in a very manly wool knit. We found […]

Gold Metallic Boucle Dress

Don we now our gay apparel! Some fabrics are meant to be worn at night, and I believe this shimmery metallic boucle from Mood Fabrics is certainly one of them: Editor’s note: Lots of boucle options are available at MoodFabrics.com. I bought the fabric at the NYC store in November 2012, and admired it at home for over a year while waiting for a vision to appear. Perhaps, a coat, a suit, or another French jacket…… And then – it came upon a midnight clear 😉 After nearly three weeks of no sewing I was eager to make something festive […]

Wool Bomber Jacket

This gorgeous wool denim made its way to my house recently. It’s Mood Fabrics’ Italian Wool Denim to be exact. Editor’s note: Looks like Lori may have gotten the last of this fabric, as it’s now sold out. But don’t worry, we have lots of wools suitable for bomber jackets here. The description  says this fabric is medium-weight, good for boxy tops and jackets. I had it in mind for another project to mix with a wool plaid but these two fabric were not quite right for each other. After Papercut Patterns’ Rigel Bomber came out, I knew this fabric […]

Dotted Silk Crepe de Chine Blouse

I’m in love with silk blouses. Seriously. I wish I had a closet full. The only other one currently in my wardrobe is constantly on repeat. When I saw this beautiful ivory and black embroidered dotted crepe de chine from Marc Jacobs at MoodFabrics.com, I knew just what I’d make with it. I picked Vogue 1323, a Rachel Comey design. I love this pattern so much for the interesting neckline and and front pockets. Any extra volume I can add to the front of my tops is a welcome addition for this small-busted gal. I also wanted to try my hand […]
