The Lurex Woven Peplum Blazer

This peplum blazer is made from this gorgeous Carolina Herrera novelty fabric. Stone-colored, it combines “black threads with graphite, gray with soft silvery strands, in a textured weave that can scarcely be described as medium-weight with the prettiest subtle sheen,” from Mood Fabrics.  And it was perfect for this collarless jacket! When I think Carolina Herrera, my first thoughts are elegance and sophistication. So I wanted to create something that would do this beautiful fabric justice. I chose New Look 6231. Even with the pleated peplum, the lines of this jacket are simple and uncomplicated.  A perfect way to highlight […]

Leopard Print Coat in Stretch Cotton Canvas

I knew my fall wardrobe needed something big and leopard, finding just the right fabric was easy while shopping online at MoodsFabrics.com. I just put “leopard” into the search box and ta-da!, up popped this fabulous fabric: Italian Leopard-Print Stretch Cotton Canvas The pattern was an easy on for me to pick, Vogue 8884, which I had made for a spring coat back on this Mood Sewing Network post. I used the same construction techniques from the spring coat and knew the fit was good. That is such a benefit when using a pattern again. I’ve read that “leopard is the new […]

Cozy Plaid Flannel, Yeah!

I’ve always loved the plaid flannel shirts that everyone wears when the temperatures start dropping, but the selection (at least where I live) has pretty much hovered around disappointing. Ugly plaids, strange fiber contents, weird boxy fits—do not want! Which is why I took the initiative and made my own. LIKE A BOSS! Seriously, though, have you seen the cotton flannels at Mood Fabrics lately? The red and black check I’m rocking here actually comes in five different colors—I mean, what better excuse do you need to wrap yourself in a cozy plaid cloud? Bonus—the loft of this fabric makes […]

Brocade Skirt and Poly Knit Top

My plans for the gorgeous Mood Fabric’s Cranberry and Blue Wool Brocade… were twofold and meant not to be worn together: first a skirt and then jacket to be worn with the floral tie shirt from my last Mood Sewing Network item. If you’re thinking “what the floral?!” I have to tell you it looked really good together, at least draped on my dressform. Well, that fabric combination isn’t going to happen, because my blazer just didn’t work out and is now going to become a sleeveless blazer. That little speed bump in my sewing room didn’t stop me. I […]

Sporty Sewing in Bamboo Jersey

I’ve been curious about bamboo fabric ever since my husband came home from a search-and-rescue team meeting one day back when we were in graduate school and told me that everyone on the team was switching to socks made out of bamboo because of the natural anti-bacterial properties of the fabric. (If you’re curious, his search-and-rescue team was an amazing group of volunteers that would get called out into the wilderness when people would get lost or injured while hiking or otherwise galavanting in the great outdoors.) I don’t talk about it much here, but I’ve been a competitive runner […]

Silk Habotai Print Peasant Blouse

“You look like you’re hiding from somebody back there!” exclaimed hubby. “Do you seriously think I can hide from anyone in this wild silk habotai print from Mood Fabrics?” This print was mine five seconds after I saw it online. What can I say? I love bold fabrics – all 62 inches of me! Mood suggests making the silk into a kimono or caftan – ‘perfect for lounging poolside in Miami or Ibiza’. I can see myself wearing a beautiful caftan in my fantasy life one day, but in the meantime I wanted to bring this mix of vibrant colors […]

Better-Late-Than-Never Baby Dresses!

Friends, I’m gonna let you in on one of my ugliest, dirtiest secrets. I hate sewing things for babies. I can feel the searing rays of your judgment! But let me explain– baby clothes are fiddly to make, fit for about 10 minutes, and never stay clean for very long. It’s a lot of work for very little payoff!  Plus, many babies are showered with so many tiny outfits when they could probably use a big box of Pampers much more than another cardigan! But, when dearly-beloved friends have babies, even the grumpiest baby grinch is occasionally tempted to dabble […]
