Two Shirts for Fall

The calendar says fall is near but until yesterday no one told Mother Nature in mid-Missouri. I was sick of the hot temperatures and really getting very tired of wearing summer clothes. Do you get that way too? Feel like you are wearing the same thing over and over? Ready for a change, and ready for the next sewing adventure? New fabric weights and textures, new pattern looks? I decided to make some fall-like clothes in fabrics that would still be cool but transition to fall. My first selection was Mood Fabrics’ Raspberry-Brown Plaid Cotton Voile by Marc Jacobs For […]

More Chado Ralph Rucci Wool Double-Knit Options

I purchased three panels of the Chado Ralph Rucci Wool double knit from Mood Fabrics NYC because initially I had no idea what I would make with it.  After deciding upon the dress, I still had yards left.  So I thought a jacket and skirt combo would allow me to play with the purple stripe that’s a main feature of this fabric.  My last post was about the dress so this one is all about the suit. I chose a jacket pattern that I’d used before – Vogue 8209 which is out of print – because the lines worked well […]

Ombre Striped Jersey Dress

I’ve wanted to make this dress ever since I first started seeing Marcy Tilton’s shingle dress (Vogue V8904) pop up around the sewing blogging world. I had my heart set on making it out of stripes since I loved the way the design of the pattern made them play this way and that. Then, Goodbye Valentino made the exact dress I’d been dreaming of for her July MSN make out of a navy and white striped cotton jersey (the same one I used for the bottom layer, which no longer appears to be available online at Mood Fabrics). I figured […]

4-Ply Silk and Cotton Brocade Paneled Top

Note: This blog post originally appeared on the Mood Sewciety blog, but I wanted to share it here as well. The genesis for my latest Mood Fabrics top was an article I saw on Style.com in July about how this shade of caramel was so hot. I immediately ran upstairs to the silk department at Mood NYC, searching through bolt after bolt until I found this lovely 4-ply silk in the perfect shade. (Have you ever worn or sewn 4-ply silk? It’s a winner on both fronts, and so addictive you’ll be drooling for an entire wardrobe of 4-ply tops […]

Rayon Jersey Print Wrap Dress

Greetings from Botany Bay, one of South Carolina’s barrier islands featuring a hauntingly beautiful boneyard beach. I’ve made my first See & Sew pattern in this fun Lycra/rayon jersey print from Mood Fabrics. I’ve said I’ll never buy another wrap dress. I’ll never buy another faux wrap dress either. I considered sewing my jersey with Vogue 1314 for some time. I even went as far as to lay out the pattern and fabric, but the practicality of the Butterick 5873 won out over high fashion 😉 Is there a better pattern – fabric combination for everyday wear? No wrinkles, no […]

1920’s Ladies Pajamas and Kimono

I am continuously inspired by the gorgeous shirting-weight cottons (prints and solids) available at Mood Fabrics.  Last month I used one for a men’s shirt.  This month I decided to try something different.  I was delighted to find, at the Chelsea Flea Market earlier this summer, an original 1920’s ladies pajamas pattern, Butterick 4639. I so loved the coffee brown cotton I used for my shirt in August that I decided to use what remained of it, along with a mauve cotton of a similar quality, to make the vintage pajamas.  The muted colors suit the period, I think. Editor’s note: […]

The Chado Ralph Rucci Wool Double Knit Dress

This garment is ALL about the fabric.  This amazing Chado Ralph Rucci wool double knit fabric was posted on Mood Fabric’s Instagram account a couple of weeks ago. After some discussion online, some drooling and a desire that just wouldn’t go away, I went to the Mood NYC store and purchased three panels, or 4 3/4 yards of fabric. Editor’s note: Here are two wool double knits we have online; both Mood stores carry many more colors of wool double knits. It’s an awesome piece of fabric with a lot of possibility so I went through several ideas of how […]

Silk Chiffon Slugger

Well.  Hello there, Tuesday.  Hello there, leg partially en-clad in whisper thin Silk Chiffon shot through with gold metallic thread.  I thought we’d never meet. Many tried to keep us from our scheduled match.  But this Labor Day weekend, I did little else than labor on you. There wasn’t much of you to begin with.  Just three yards.  But those few floaty inches had a sting like a bee.  I had to sacrifice some print matching for sure.  It took me five hours to adjust my stance against your grainlines, though your metallic crossgrain did help. Let’s face it, you […]
