Marc Jacobs Cotton Baby Dress

During my last trip to Mood Fabric LA, I wandered down the cotton print aisle.  Right there, amid the floral cotton voiles and yarn-dyed shirtings, this Marc Jacobs print practically jumped into my arms (click HERE for a huge assortment of Marc Jacobs designer fabrics from Moodfabrics.com).  When it comes to cotton prints, I first need to fall in love with the print, then I need to fall in love with the hand of the fabric.  I would best describe this fabric as a lightweight cotton gauze. It has a floatiness to it that I haven’t ever seen before.  This […]

Silk to the Max!

Do you ever spot a fabric that you want desperately, but don’t really know what to do with?  I usually try not to buy fabric if I can’t come up with a specific plan for it as I don’t really have the space to store it, so I said no to this amazing silk crepe de chine TWICE.  Finally, on a third visit to Mood Fabrics NYC, I had a vision of myself wearing it from head to toe and snatched it up to make a maxi dress! Editor’s note: Take a look at all the silk crepe de chines […]

Silk Crepe de Chine Maxi

I can’t even tell y’all how thrilled I am to be in cahoots with who we all know are my favorite MSN ladies, Oona and Sonja. Truth, they originally planned this as a duo, in which I walked straight into that party and invited myself to be the third wheel. I can’t help it; I love being part of a Mood Fabrics sandwich. Especially when it involves Thakoon Crepe de Chine. I mean, COME ON. So, as we all know at this point – this is the Anna dress, the newest offering from By Hand London. For mine, I decided […]

Silk Dresses To The Instagram Power

Could mugs like these be up to anything good?  I answer with a happy NO.  Peter, resident photographer in mid-laugh over the level of our gin infused delight, would probably agree. At the moment, these sisters-in-cocktails are all quite sober.  One needs a little sobriety for the staggering amount of French seaming and blind stitching going on across the country.  Over the next few days, this wee chunk of MSN are all in Silk, and all in the same pattern. Why did we decide to tackle this self-imposed mini challenge?  You may put the blame squarely on the dreamy filtered […]

Two More Tops Before Summer Fades

Summer is winding down and my thoughts are turning toward fall sewing.  I am not ready to give up summer all together, after all it is still 90+ degrees here in Missouri, but I am ready for sewing something different. I spotted this fabric right when it was added—Mood Fabrics’ Italian Teal and Black Lacy Brocade—and I had to have it. It is so gorgeous and my thoughts were a simple Grainline Scout T-shirt, that way the fabric does all the talking. Another plus was the fabric description from Mood’s site, “Has a soft hand and graceful drape, almost like […]

Thakoon Cotton Top

I had forgotten how awesome sewing with cotton is. I’ve realized that I much prefer it over, well satin. Ha I guess you could say I’m still a little scarred from that last satin dress I made. The cotton is this geometric print from Mood Fabrics. The designer is Thakoon and I think I got a little too excited when I realized who that was. (The September Issue!)  I was really impressed with him when I watched that so I’m glad to see he’s still designing. (Let’s pretend that I didn’t completely forget to iron the back of the shirt. […]

Menswear Suiting for Fall

This month’s garment is a combination of menswear suiting and wool crepe. A dress (yes another dress!) that works with my style aesthetic and the corporate dress code that governs my days…oh and most importantly I’m sewing fall now.  Yes, I know that there are still lovely summer breezes blowing and days full of heat and humidity…but every fashion magazine is telling me it’s fall…and quite frankly this year I actually want to sew fall early. So with two things in mind (designer interpretation and fall fashions) I went to the mens’ suiting department on the upper floor of the […]

Silk Crepe de Chine Wrap Top

I often think my Fall wardrobe is practically non-existent – most likely because I look like I’m coming down with something when I wear those traditional, Fall earth-tone colors. Fortunately the Pantone Fall 2013 report brings new colors to the mix translating into exciting possibilities for my closet! My first Fall sewing project needed to be a go-to garment. Being a lover of silk, I ordered this crepe de chine from Mood Fabrics by designer Thakoon—the gorgeous colors enhance every pair of pants I own! True, the fabric would make a beautiful special occasion garment, but I’ll feel special each time […]

Missoni-esque Jersey Maxi Dress

I continued the maxi dress theme with a fabulous maxi for me, purchasing Mood Fabrics’ Missoni-esque Jersey Print for the dress. The colors seem perfect for late summer into early fall, plus Missoni is a look I love. I selected McCall’s 6700 and I went to work. My work was short-lived, I did not order enough fabric the first time– oops. No worries, I went right to my Mood Fabrics’ order history, found the sku number and reordered more yardage. My package arrived in no time and back to work I went. I was careful to match the side seams […]
