Cotton and Coconuts and Curls

If I look self satisfied, IT IS BECAUSE I AM.  The reasons are twofold: 1. I conquered this cotton. 2. I conquered myself. I CONQUER, YO.  I AM A CONQUISTADOR OF COTTON.  (that may not mean what I think it means, but I’m going with it.  I have a sazerac in hand and no desire to use my dictionary widget.) Last month, I decided to try my hand at what my fellow Mood Sewing Network bloggers are old hat at: ordering online from MoodFabrics.com. Within a minute, I stumbled upon this Thakoon cotton, and these decorative coconut shells. It is almost […]

Peter’s Cotton-Mohair Suit Pants

This month for the Mood Sewing Network I’m making myself a suit!  The fabric I’ve chosen is a luxurious gray cotton-mohair suiting, made in Italy, and purchased at Mood Fabrics NYC.  It has a somewhat firmer hand than lightweight tropical wool suiting but feels a bit more casual (due to the cotton), and has a beautiful sheen. Editor’s note: MoodFabrics.com has a ton of suiting fabrics. We actually sell more menswear fabrics than you realize! I decided to make the trousers first (as recommended in my suit-making books) and the jacket second.  That way you’re more experienced working with the […]

Bitten Again by the Ruffle Bug

While sewing my casual knits the ruffles were calling my name, and I answered. The craving to sew ruffles was stronger than any craving I’ve ever had for chocolate, but I tried to be practical and made an all-purpose white shirt. Of course it’s all-purpose! Mood Fabric’s Ivory Solid Goes with Everything Silk really does go with everything in my closet! It’s perfect with my re-fashioned floral pants…. party ready with my celebration skirt…. and very practical when combined with jeans for a walk in the park. That’s right – if Kate Spade wears silk to the flea market then […]

Polka Dot Shorty Shorts

Fair warning: I’m about to show a LOT of leg. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya 😉 I made these pin-up style shorty shorts with Mood Fabric’s Marc Jacobs polka dot linen that I bought while I was in the NY store. This stuff is FABULOUS and I really wish I’d bought the whole bolt! This is actually my second garment made using this fabric – the first being Tilly’s Miette Wrap Skirt, for which I originally bought the fabric. I had a small piece left over and I was just barely able to squeeze these shorts out […]

Eyelet Border Top for Meredith

There is a saying that holds true on this sewing adventure, “The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.”  Which is a line from the poem titled “To a Mouse” by Robert Burns and the poem is the source of the title of Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men.  What does this literary history lesson have to do with my Mood Sewing Network post?  Well, Meredith and I had  big plans for a beautiful graduation dress for her from Mood Fabrics’ white/cream polka dots embroidery and eyelet voile (which is very similar to the blouse I made on my last […]

Mapping My Mood – Part One

Editor’s note: We are pleased to welcome London sewing blogger Karen Ball of Did You Make That as our first guest blogger at the Mood Sewing Network. She visited Mood NYC in March of this year and we were delighted to make her acquaintance. Karen will be sharing a few posts here about making a dress with some Marc Jacobs fabric from Mood. Back in March, I travelled from London to New York and was lucky enough to hit Mood Fabrics not once, but twice. On my first visit, I spotted some plaid and glitter polka dot wool challis that I […]

A Brilliant Blue Lace Trench Coat

A couple of months ago, Mood sent us a fistful of swatches to show us what they had in new for spring. Of course everything on the swatch cards was something amazing – metallic linen, chambray, Swiss dot, spring boucles, matte jersey – but what really caught my eye was this bright blue eyelet lace, simply labeled “lace outerwear.” Never mind that I couldn’t think of any use for the stuff, I HAD to have it. I mean… look at that! It’s so gorgeous and blue, and those big embroidered flowers are my favorite thing ever. The fabric itself is […]
