Brocade Pants

“One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries.” A. A. Milne Had I known organizing my sewing room would result in a two week hiatus from sewing AND blogging, I bet I would still be in the midst of a huge mess declaring I couldn’t take the time needed to bring order and modest aesthetic appeal to my cluttered space. I reached a good stopping point and expect to finish up over the next few weeks with pictures forthcoming. At last I can sew in a pleasant surroundings! Last year I made five […]

Baby Blue Sweater Knit Pullover

This pullover from the November 2012 Burda features a low and wide neckline with cuff sleeves and cuffed waistband. I was drawn to the upstyle casual look of it. I really liked how the back and front were two different lengths — providing visual interest to something that could otherwise be a bit ordinary. For this project, I made my usual full bust adjustment and graded from a 38 bust to a 42 at the hips. I really wanted to make sure the pullover wouldn’t ‘cup’ under my tuchis from being too tight. For this project, I used the last […]

Paprika Wool Jacket

Here she is—my first make of 2013, and my very first jacket!  I’m so excited to add this little piece to my wardrobe! As you may recall, when I was looking for jacket inspiration, I was really drawn to the idea of using a fun, vibrant color.  But you know what they say about the best-laid plans of mice, men, and fashionistas… I came to Mood NYC with every intention of leaving with a bright, saturated fabric, but once I laid eyes on this gorgeous Ralph Lauren wool, I just couldn’t put it back!  It’s a twill-weave suiting with lots […]

Brown Wool Crepe Jacket

This jacket is part of my City in Winter Collection.  I’ve been working on and sewing this wardrobe since last October. The purpose of this exercise was to create a versatile wardrobe that I could use for any part of my busy life —work, dates out with friends and church.  I’ve finished quite a few pieces (I’ve already shared the bottoms here) but I was dragging my feet making the jacket. The jacket is from Vogue 8208 which is an out-of-print pattern that has been reviewed several times on Pattern Review…and now I know why there are only four reviews for it!  This […]

Silk Dots and Rhinestones

I fell for this Marc Jacob’s embroidered silk from Mood months ago. I saved it in my list of must-get fabrics while I searched for the right pattern. I wanted the pattern to be playful for the sake of the dots, while also being serious enough to live up to the silk. Enter BurdaStyle’s Graphic Dress 09/2012 #113. I liked the carefree nature of the Peter Pan collar, as well as the design of the front facing that lent a tuxedo vibe to the dress. Add some of Mood’s rhinestone buttons, and you’ve a great combination. Overall, I’m incredibly happy […]

the blogger boucle

One busy afternoon at Mood, The Police were playing. Kway and I discussed the awesomeness of this giant among rock bands. Greats bands are like a marriage, he said, some end, but after they’ve had kids. Then when it’s over, you say, yeah, they got divorced. But those are some beautiful kids. I suppose that’s what it’s like with this boucle. Or at least, the idea of this boucle. We had an affair for over two months before I finally divorced myself from my original vision of it. Ruggy would catch me standing in the middle of the room, hugging it: what are you doing? Really […]

Adventures with Faux Suede

This is Vogue 1317 – Chado Ralph Rucci.  When I was getting ready to cut this pattern out, I came to the realization that even though I’ve collected almost every Rucci pattern that VP has released, I’ve never made one.  That was really surprising, downright shocking considering how much I admire his designs and skill.  If you ever run across his documentary “Ralph Rucci:  A Designer and His House” on Sundance channel, it’s a must see!  He’s a serious haute couturier! Here is the runway version from Chado Ralph Rucci Fall 2011. Description: Dress has low neckline slit, close-fitting bodice […]

Grace with Lace

Sometimes when I look through an online fabric store, I like to type certain things in the search field and see what pops up. “Yellow,” “embroidered,” “wool double knit” and “silk jersey” are some of my favorites. Right after I’d made my eggplant military jacket I did a search for “copper” on Mood’s website, and it pulled up this lace. I thought it would be perfect for a little top to wear under my jacket, so I ordered 1.5 yards with no real pattern in mind. Surprise! Turns out it really wanted to be a dress. It’s funny how fabric […]

Vintage Wool Crepe Dress

Y’all. Can we talk about wool crepe for a minute? I just love this stuff to tiny threadbare pieces and I wish everything I made had a wool crepe option. I love the spongy texture, the glorious drape, the magical body-temperature-regularity (yay, wool!), and the COLORS. Truly, everyone should have at least one experience rolling around in a uncut length of wool crepe. Especially if it is a jewel-toned wool crepe. Ooh la la. For my first Mood Sewing Network project, I wanted that experience to include wool crepe. I have a beautiful 1940s Simplicity pattern that I knew would […]
